Nintendo lets Skyward Sword trailer fly for SDCC

Some thing tells me that all of the Nintendites in San Diego this weekend patiently waiting to get there mitts on a Master Sword with a WiiMotion Plus attachment jammed into the hilt will be treated to a 90-second loop of this music. Luckily, the music is pretty darn fantastic.

While there is a fair amount of repeat footage in there, you really can’t complain about a Zelda trailer that eclipses the 90-second mark. That Goron with a backpack better be bringing me super rare wallpapers or carpets for my brand new house, especially considering Sahara hasn’t shown her face in quite some time.

The Legend of Zelda turns 25!

Just like his older, rounder, mustached plumber brother did last year, Link today turns 25 with the anniversary of The Legend of Zelda on Nintendo’s Famicom System. While retaining his green tunic, pointy hat, and signature sword, we’ve seen Link evolve from boy to warrior. He’s endured countless battles, saved Princess Zelda from peril endless times, and defeated Ganon — in all of his forms — more times than you can shake a Deku stick at.

We’ve seen Link journey from sidescrolling adventures in Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link, to portable adventures like Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, to 3D adventures with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. So the question stands to be answered, what is your favorite Zelda title? You have plenty to choose from, so think carefully and let us know!

Promo video proves importance of upcoming Zeldathon

Last month, we gave you a heads up about an upcoming Zeldathon taking place this December, in which a group of Pennsylvania do-gooders plan on over working their thumbs in a 5-day gaming marathon to support the American Diabetes Association. Their goal is to raise $5,000 to help combat the disease that has affected millions.

The statistic filled trailer above really puts into perspective just how important fundraising efforts are for diabetes, a disease that hits close to home for many of us, including the marathon’s director Matthew Moffit who lost both his father and grandfather to the disease.

Aside from playing Zelda titles and happily receiving donations, the group will also give away swag, some of which will be donated by us at The Tanooki (so you know it’ll be good stuff!).

December “Zeldathon” to raise money for American Diabetes Association

Here at The Tanooki, the bulk of what you read consists of exciting new video game information. However, we’re fortunate enough to alert you of an upcoming donation event that benefits the American Diabetes Association.

This past June, a group of teen gamers used their love of The Legend of Zelda series to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. The team took part in a “Zeldathon” that lasted a whopping 72-hours long. With more than 72,000 viewers watching the stream footage, which we also hosted on our site, the group brought in over $3,300 for the society. But we gamers need to do better…

On Monday, December 27th, the group is at it again, this time raising money for the American Diabetes Association. With a goal of $5,000, every cent that you can donate will help the cause.

“Both my father and grandfather passed away due to complications of diabetes,” said Matthew Moffit, Marathon Director. “It is my hope that through this event, we can not only have lots of fun with our audience, but raise a great deal of money to help fund diabetes research as well.”

We’ll be streaming the event live right here on our site. And don’t worry, we will be sure to remind you of the event in the coming months, just make sure you keep an eye on this holiday season’s upcoming Zeldathon. Pennsylvania Teens to use Video Games to Raise Money for Diabetes Research:

MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA – September 20, 2010 – Beginning Monday, December 27, a group of teens from Meadville, Pennsylvania is looking to raise thousands of dollars for diabetes research by broadcasting a marathon session of The Legend of Zelda video games streamed live over the internet.

This is the third time the group has utilized this method of fundraising, which drew over 70,000 viewers during their last effort this past June. December’s event will feature the “Zeldathon” team as they venture to play as many games from the popular Nintendo series over a five day period, with as few interruptions as possible. Any person or group that helps promote this event is also urged to donate to the American Diabetes Association via the www.zeldathon.net web site, commencing mid-December.

The Zeldathon Team’s successful summer marathon lasted seventy-two hours, attracted more than 72,000 viewers, and raised over $3,300 for the American Cancer Society. This winter’s “Zeldathon” aims to transcend prior achievements by implementing a higher quality broadcast and a longer marathon run time. The viewing audience will have a chance to win prizes by donating money, publicizing the event on social media websites, submitting fan art or telling stories about how diabetes has impacted their lives. “Both my father and grandfather passed away due to complications of diabetes,” stated Matthew Moffit, Marathon Director. “It is my hope that through this event, we can not only have lots of fun with our audience, but raise a great deal of money to help fund diabetes research as well.”

The American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org) is an organization that helps improve the lives of those living with diabetes and their families by providing guidance, medication, and information in addition to funding research in search of a cure. The organization’s “Step Out” program is being implemented in this event to track donations.

“I have a lot of great people working with me on this event,” Moffit acknowledged, “I know with the support of the public, we can help change the world one marathon at a time.”

Zelda’s Skyward Sword story details revealed

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword isn’t due to slash store shelves until sometime within the broad 2011 time range. Translation? We’re going to impatiently gobble up every bit of news and information we can.

In the latest issue of Nintendo Power, on store shelves now, we do learn a bit about the story of the next Zelda Wii adventure. Link resides within Skyloft, an aerial area that floats above the clouds. Below Skyloft is a land in peril. Due to an event that will “change Link’s life forever,” our tunic-wearing hero will leave Skyloft to enter the dangerous land below to help restore good. Throughout the adventure, Link will transport himself between Skyloft and this dangerous land, though the details of how he’ll move from land to land are being kept secret for now.

I guess this explains the Skyward Sword E3 trailer which showed Link belly flopping off a cliff through the clouds. I can’t wait for Link to return in 2011.

Master Zelda timeline places Skyward Sword before Ocarina of Time

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma, undoubtedly a top authority on all things Hyrule, has confirmed in an interview both the existence of a Zelda time line, and Skyward Sword‘s placement in it. The above scan, courtesy of a source at Zelda Dungeon, is from the latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine and is part of an interview Aonuma, who said:

“Yes there is a master timeline but its confidential document! The only people to have access to that document are myself, Mr. Miyamoto and the director of the title. We cant share it with anyone else! I have already talked to Mr. Miyamoto about this so I am comfortable in releasing this information – this title [Skyward Sword] takes place before Ocarina of Time. If I said that a certain title was ‘the first Zelda game’, then that means that we cant ever make a title that takes place before that! So for us to add titles to the series, we have to have a way of putting the titles before or after each other.”

The fact that Skyward Swords takes place before Ocarina of Time is a no brainer–SS is said to explain the origins of the Master Sword. But it’s nice to get another confirmation that a Nintendo-created Zelda time line does exist. Now to figure out where The Minish Cap fits into all of this…

Ape Lad’s Link Twitter avatar sure to cause a chuckle

Adam Koford (aka Ape Lad, creator of the adorably humorous Laugh-Out-Loud Cats) has recently been outputting a stream of illustrations based on the default avatar that new Twitter users are assigned. From Yoda to Max cuddling a Wild Thing, they’ve all been charming riffs on the iconic bird. Imagine my surprise waking up this morning to discover that his latest upload was that of a somewhat uncertain-looking Link, bow in hand and quiver ready. All the pieces are great, but something about the representation of Link is really quite priceless.

Prepare yourself for a grin and a chuckle, then hit up the image on flickr, or the full set of avatars.

Zelda and Link will team up for Spirit Tracks

Throughout the past two decades, Princess Zelda has been captured more than a dozen times. However, Link’s upcoming adventure in Spirit Tracks takes Zelda out of the role of damsel in distress, and puts her as your partner. Well, her spirit at least. Zelda’s spirit can help you along your adventure by offering wisdom, and taking control of Phantoms, (suits of armor) which you can use to help solve puzzles.

The partnership of Link and Zelda has never happened in the 23 year history of the franchise. The closest was Link and Sheik, Zelda’s alter ego in The Ocarina of Time.

The game releases December 7th in North America.

Nintendo women sent back to the 80′s

It was a long time coming, but the three big women in the Nintendo world have finally embraced their roots.

In a sort of 80′s bad girl mash up, illustrator Assim Heetun brings the heroines back to a place that they haven’t been for awhile. Make sure to check out Peach’s tattoos and the art on Samus’ logo. Very nice touches.

I’m about ready to break out the sleeveless jean jacket and Ray Bans, if only I weren’t a little terrified of the trio. I would love to see more artwork like this, perhaps sans the leg warmers. Anyone have any thoughts into why the N64 logo made an appearance?

Photoshop gives us a Link to Reality

First Mario, then Bowser, and now Link. Amateur Photoshop artist Mataleone has brought everyone’s favorite Hylian to life, but there’s something about it that makes me want to cry.

Is it the platinum blonde hair? Is it the right eye being further out than the left? I mean, there’s no doubting it’s a quality Photoshop job, but maybe we should leave bringing Link to life to the cosplayers.

Zelda fan art deviates from realism

I don’t care what a lot of the “mainstream” players thought, I consider The Wind Waker‘s art style to be beautiful and an original/fresh take on the Zelda universe. DeviantArtist croix22 seems to have thought so as well, having drawn several other characters from the Zelda series in the style of the modern GameCube classic – only the fourth game to receive a 40/40 from Famitsu.

The Wind Waker’s Aryll, now in paper form

Now you can make yourself a little sister! DaredevilBR is the artist behind this papercraft model of The Wind Waker Link’s sister, Aryll. Quite impressive, huh? Not the crafting quality, I’m talking about Aryll’s ability to actually stand on those chibi feet. Impressive!

You can download the PDO file at the link below to make your own version of this model, but you’ll need Pepakura software to open it. As always, be sure to let us know how it turns out!
