Why your Wii Remote doesn’t already have a Wii MotionPlus in it

1:1 sword fighting was the kind of thing people hyped themselves up over upon the revelation of the Revolution controller. It wasn’t until later everyone realized how impractical that would be with the current Wii Remote. So why can’t it do that? Well, according to the Reginator, it was just too expensive at the time.

So how are Nintendo going to convince people to spend the money on such a costly accessory? Well, it probably won’t really be all that costly. As Reggie Fils-Aime said in a recent interview:

We were aware of that technology (the gyroscopic chips made by Invensense) at the time we designed the original Wii. But the cost would have been too high for the business model. It would have been unacceptable. By waiting about three years, the costs come down substantially and it becomes a viable product.

So there you go. The reason you haven’t been swinging your Wii Remote around like a Jedi these last few years (unless you have been… in which case, I’m not here to judge). As a side note, feel free to check out the full interview. It’s an interesting read.

While the majority of gamers that populate online communities can’t wait to get their hands dirty with some 1:1 control, De Blob producer Nick Hagger raises a skeptical eyebrow at the add on, as it could over complicate controls. Click over to see what he has to say.

InvenSense: MotionPlus 101

So you’ll probably be dropping some hard-earned cash for Wii Sports: Resort early next year, just for the fact that it includes what could be a vital peripheral for future Wii games. What’s the big deal? What does it do?

It gives you 1:1 control. Lightsabers and such. Just in case you don’t quite understand it, though, InvenSense wants to explain. Their video at the link below may be a bit bland - you might want to crank up some music in the background - but it explains how the accelerometers in the Wii Remote combine to work with InvenSense’s gyroscope in Wii MotionPlus to give you…magic.

EA is taking a swing at tennis with Wii MotionPlus

In addition to the already solid lineup of sports games from EA, the company is bringing an all new tennis franchise to consoles next year. The game is slated to land on the Wii first, followed by other platforms.

Details are scarce at this point, outside of the inclusion of (hopefully 1:1) Wii MotionPlus support. I would kill for a solid tennis game on the Wii, and with the potential of the add-on this could be an ace.

Iwata confirms gyroscopes in Wii MotionPlus

Back in the old days, back before the “Revmote,” rumors were flying as to what the big deal was and why Nintendo wouldn’t even show a picture of the Revolution controller. Motion control was pretty much agreed on by the fans, but they expected gyroscopes instead of accelerometers. It looks like Wii MotionPlus will finally be bringing what we’ve been waiting for all along. Satoru Iwata explains:

The idea is something we’ve been contemplating for quite a long time. My understanding about the timing, the reason we are announcing this kind of attachment right now, is because we have come to the stage where we can purchase a significant amount of the gyroscope technology at a reasonable price point, and the stability of this kind of technology itself has been confirmed, so that’s why we’re making this announcement today.

Awesome. Now let’s see that Zelda demo from Space World 2000 being controlled by Wii MotionPlus! Hey, I can dream, right?
