What’s this? A quick search of the ESRB database reveals Super Mario Land and Alleyway for the Nintendo 3DS. But… those are Game Boy games!

Oh, that’s right — the Nintendo 3DS’ eShop launches next week. Those two Game Boy launch games will likely be headlining the Virtual Console launch on Nintendo’s portable. The Mario classic and Nintendo-themed Breakout clone will eventually be joined by Virtual Console offerings from the Game Boy Color, Sega’s Game Gear, and Hudson’s TurboGrafx-16.

The eShop launches June 6th in North America and June 7th in Japan and Europe.

At some point in January, Japanese Wii owners will be able to buy Final Fantasy V all over again when the Super Famicom classic arrives on the Virtual Console over there. The Virtual Console release will cost Wii owners 800 points when it eventually arrives.

There’s no word on the game’s international re-release, but given FFV‘s popularity, it would make sense if North American and European releases weren’t too far behind. It’s unknown which version of the game would be used if and when the title becomes available for international markets, given that official translations of the game weren’t available until the game’s debut on the PlayStation and Game Boy Advance.

Either way, any release should tide fans over until we get further word on that possible 3DS remake of the game…

Description: HB Arcade Disc Golf re-creates the popular disc-flinging sport in the comfort of your own living room. Playing the game is as easy as tossing a disc around on a beautiful day. The goal of the game is to put the disc in the basket in the fewest throws possible. Disc golfers have three different types of discs at their disposal when out on the course: a driver, a mid-range disc and a putter. Also, there are three different types of throws available: forehand, backhand and the hammer throw. The forehand and backhand throws change based on the handedness of the player, and can be used to draw or fade a shot, while the hammer throw is less about distance and more about height. At the end of the round, scores are tallied and the player with the lowest score is the winner.

ESRB Rating: T (Teen) – Mild Suggestive Themes
Price: 900 Wii Points
Description: MAGICAL DROP II is a puzzle action game released by Data East in 1996. The rules are simple. Control the clown to pull in and throw back the balloons that appear on the screen. If you line up three or more balloons of the same color in a row vertically, they will burst. Some balloons feature unique characteristics. Special balloons, which come in all four colors, pop every balloon of the same color. Arrow balloons burst everything in the direction the arrow is facing. Rainbow balloons have the same effect as special balloons, but can be thrown against a balloon of any color. And then there are bubble balloons, which simply get in your way. Together, these provide you with great chains and combos that make a puzzle game so much fun. Choose between VS CPU Mode, full of battles with a host of comical characters, and Puzzle Mode, where you’ll enjoy a one-player challenge. Both modes support player-versus-player action, meaning you can have a great time together with friends.

Nintendo is giving us the gift of WiiWare game demos this week, as part of their weekly releases for their downloadable services. That’s awfully thoughtful, especially since the latter part of the week is going to be a little rocky, with our pants a little snugger, and our wallets a little lighter.

Today the Big N is bringing free demos, available for WiiWare titles And Yet It Moves, BIT.TRIP FATE, Jett Rocket and ThruSpace. All of these titles have received critical acclaim so if you’ve yet to purchase them out, take advantage of the fact that they are free to try!

New for WiiWare this week is peguin-filled adventure title Snowpack Park. For DSiWare this week releases include Tetris Party Live, and online enabled Tetris game, as well as Supermarket Mania and Music on: Electric Guitar. For the Virtual Console comes Spin Master.

For more information about these games, as well as pricing details, continue reading the official press release below the break.

ESRB Rating: E (Everyone) – Comic Mischief
Price: 800 Wii Points
Description: Welcome to Snowpack Park! You’ve arrived in hopes of hanging out with some of the local penguins and learning how to take care of them. However, a recent storm has just sent the residents of the park fleeing to various islands throughout the area, and there are only a few penguins to be found. Take control of either a Mii™ character or one of the game’s built-in characters and brave various terrains and unexpected obstacles. Travel from island to island, find penguins and bring them back safely to the park. But getting them back is just the beginning. The penguins have different moods, which will go up and down depending on how much interaction they have with you. If a penguin’s mood gets too bad, it will leave the park. To prevent that from happening, you must learn how to feed, pet and play with the penguins in order to keep them happy. Throughout the park, you’ll also find fun minigames to play, headwear pieces for the penguins to wear, fish for them to eat, blowfish to roll up into snowballs and a variety of other useful things. You can even collect photos of yourself and the penguins by visiting one of the park’s photo-taking locations. Prepare for a heartwarming Antarctic adventure!

Some of the best news out of Nintendo’s 3DS extravaganza was the mention of a system similar to the Virtual Console of the Wii for the Nintendo 3DS. There will be all sorts of goodies available, including classic games from the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance era. In the words of Tychus Findlay, “Hell, it’s about time!”.

Speaking of classics available for the Nintendo 3DS, it was also confirmed that many old school titles will be getting the 3D treatment, and re-released as downloads. Remember those tech demos at e3 of the original Super Mario Bros. with an extra dimension added? Think along those lines.

The Tanooki Staff: 1965

Feels like just yesterday we were getting ready for the beginning of pool season when the unofficial start of summer kicked off with Memorial Day here in the U.S. of A. Now a few months later, we draw the summer festivities to a close with Labor Day (which really should be called “No Labor Day,” right?) a day reserved for lounging, slouching, and grilling meat.

Nintendo is conveniently celebrating this special Monday with a handful of titles for WiiWare, Virtual Console and DSiWare. For WiiWare comes Fenimore Fillmore “The Westerner,” a game that will bring you back to the days of the wild west, a fond time in America’s history. For Virtual Console comes Samurai Showdown III, where your samurai of choice will slash and defeat enemies along your journey to take down Zankuro Minazuki (not really U.S. related but that’s fine). For DSiWare this week comes Simply Mahjong, My Exotic Farm and Music On: Acoustic Guitar. Okay clearly there is no Labor Day theme for these titles, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth downloading!

For more information about this week’s releases, continuing the reading the official press release below the break.

Meet the classic doctor, the powerful “master of the land,” an industrious pioneer and men and women who raised a great nation with their blood, sweat and tears. But there are things that cannot be helped, and one of them – very typical in the West – is the continuous fighting between farmers and cattle ranchers. While farmers used to win the sympathy of most people, cattle ranchers had more money, more men and more power. Only a cowboy as peculiar as Fenimore Fillmore could side with the farmers when the rest of the cowboys are paid by the merciless and sinister cattle rancher.
