Team Ninja was able to free up some time in their schedule now that they’ve released Metroid: Other M among the masses. So naturally, we were expecting to hear about their upcoming projects. The company didn’t disappoint today, announcing Ninja Gaiden 3.

The announcement came from Yosuke Hayashi at an event earlier today (er-last night) at the Tokyo Game Show. News of Ninja Gaiden 3 came bundled with a concept art (pictured above) showing the series’ star Ryu Hayabusa, with blood splattered on his face as well as his half-clenched hand, held in front of his face.

The game is slated for a 2011 release, with no console confirmation given.

With E3 just a few days away, it seems like a good amount of secrecy still surrounds this year’s biggest new game announcements. But it’s only natural that a few titles get unveiled prior to this year’s show.

An E3 map on GameSpot reveals a few notable titles to be featured at the show this year. Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 are listed under the EA booth’s “Featured Games,” while Dead or Alive 5 is listed under Tecmo’s booth.

While the mention of these sequels isn’t really all that surprising, knowing that they’ll be at E3 will certainly make this year’s show worthwhile. Then again, it could just be a big typo.

Nintendo has announced a partnership with Tecmo Koei to release the next installment of the Samurai Warriors series here in North America. Samurai Warriors 3 will offer a brand new innovative story line and game modes. The title will also introduce seven newly playable characters, returning favorites, as well as new gameplay elements.

SW3 will include both online and offline multiplayer for up to two players.  The game was originally released in Japan last December, available in three different sets. One as the standalone title, another bundled with the Classic Controller Pro, and the third with the controller and a mini-figurine, the game’s soundtrack on CD and a guidebook of art.

No word if those bundles will release here in the states, but I’m betting you can count on at least the controller bundle.

Although heavily rumored, the ESRB has let the cat out of the pig skinned bag when they posted the unannounced game Tecmo Bowl Throwback on their ratings page. The game is a remake of the classic NES arcade style football title Tecmo Bowl, a game that was easily the biggest and best football franchise until that John Madden guy came along. Here’s how the ESRB describes the game:

This is a top-down arcade-style football game in which players compete against teams around the country to become the “Tecmo Bowl Champion.” Some of the football highlights are depicted in animated cutscenes (with better graphics); a few non-football highlights depict cheerleaders wearing low-cut tops while dancing. And a jumbotron screen displays a 2D swimsuit model with some exposed cleavage.

With the recent resurgence of retro revived titles, it’s good to see these classics get new life. The title will release for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Were you surprised by Metroid: Other M on Tuesday? So were we. With everyone expecting Zelda, Mario, and Pikmin, all on top of the fact that we were already getting a Metroid Prime compilation from Retro, no one saw a joint Metroid project from Nintendo and Tecmo’s Team Ninja coming. In fact, Koei, the company that merged with Tecmo, didn’t even know about it.

Team Ninja was already knee-deep in Metroid when the merger began, and Nintendo was so protective of the project that Tecmo couldn’t disclose the project to Koei. There are roughly 100 members of Team Ninja… talk about being stealthy!

This one seems to be causing all the commotion among the fans. Metroid: Other M is the new Metroid title from Nintendo, co-developed by Tecmo’s Team Ninja, and it features full voice acting, both first-person perspectives influenced by the Metroid Prime series as well as third-person action and shooting as we originally anticipated Samus in 3D.

I’ve posted screens from the game past the break, and I’ll post the trailer shortly.

OK, so no North American release, and despite previous reports, no European release. In a statement given in the most recent Official Nintendo Magazine, it was confirmed by Nintendo that, “One time envisaged for a May release, the localization of the game [Fatal Frame IV] has been cancelled and the game will stay as an Japanese exclusive game.”

Word on the street is that the bugs in the Japanese game literally left the game unplayable, and that complications prevented Tecmo from fixing these issues for international releases. Since Nintendo doesn’t like to release broken games, it won’t be published by them anywhere else. AND, since Nintendo was heavily involved in the game’s development, it’s unlikely anyone else will pick the title up.

Sigh, there goes that series.

MTV had a chat with Reggie Fils-Aime recently, and in it they asked about the possibility of a Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse release for North America. Reggie’s response? “We are not the publisher of that title in the Americas.” Well, according to Tecmo, yes, they are.

Nintendo holds the publishing rights to ‘Fatal Frame Wii,’ which was developed by Tecmo LTD. and Grasshopper Manufacture and released in Japan on July 31, 2008. Nintendo of America has since then decided not to publish the title in North America – consequently, the title will not be released in this territory. As the owner of the IP, Tecmo feels very unfortunate that the fans of the series in North America will not have a chance to play the game, but respects the final decision made by Nintendo of America.

So it looks like if Nintendo isn’t publishing it, then it simply won’t be published. Does Nintendo really want to keep the publishing rights to a game they have no intention of publishing outside of Japan? What good does that do anybody?

Effective today, we’re getting another category of downloadable games for the Wii, with games that could potentially predate even those Commodore 64 titles on your system. The Virtual Console is going ARCADE.

Announced at GDC, the new Virtual Console Arcade launches with four classic titles not generally available for any other home console: Tecmo’s Starforce, and Namco Bandai’s Mappy, Gaplus, and The Tower of Druaga. On the way are Namco Bandai’s Solvalou and Sega’s Space Harrier, and all titles should be available at prices comparable to current NES and Master System games on the service.

You think they’ll try and release Donkey Kong again? Or even Pong for 500 dingers?

Gamers will be glad to have that additional storage space, as the Virtual Console will expand to include the arcade versions of classic third-party games like STARFORCE by Tecmo Ltd., and Mappy, Gaplus and Tower of Druaga by Namco Bandai Games Inc. starting today.

A new trailer for Tecmo’s Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse has surfaced, and you can view it above. With the game’s Japanese release a mere week away, all’s quiet on the Western front with no indication of a North American release. No worries, though, as a game looking this good on the Wii foregoing an international launch would be a missed opportunity. I’m sure not even Nintendo and Tecmo would want to pass that up… right?

Looks like Matrix Software won’t be following up their pair of 3D Final Fantasy remakes on the DS with Final Fantasy V or VI – at least not anytime soon. The developer has been announced to be working on a brand new game for Tecmo called Wind of Nostalgia. The game is shown in the latest Famitsu magazine and should be arriving in Japan later this year.

Not surprisingly, the game is an RPG. I’m pretty sure Matrix Software has been well-trained in that area, so this should be one to look forward to. You can check out more scans of Eddie and Co. after the break.
