Prepare for a long wait on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS

With E3 2011 came the thrilling news of a new entry in the Super Smash Bros. series for both Wii U and 3DS, marking the series first foray into HD, 3D and hand held. Sadly, we’re looking at a long wait before either versions even enter development, much less reach retail shelves. As series creator Masahiro Sakurai told 1-Up:

“Right now, we’re devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus…We’ve got no plans whatsoever – we’ve got two new games out in the open when there’s no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I’m not sure it’s the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members.”

So just sit back, relax, and pretend you’re waiting online for an SSBB opponent to sync. Should feel like pretty much the same amount of time.

Nobuo Uematsu interested in composing for new Super Smash Bros. games

Video game music fans out there were ecstatic years ago when it was revealed in 2007 that the composer behind the Super Smash Bros. Brawl “Main Theme” was none other than famed Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu. Today, the Smash Bros. sequels for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are still in their early development phases, but Uematsu has already expressed his interest in returning to contribute original music to the new games.

“If I have the opportunity to work with Nintendo for the new Smash Bros., yes, I absolutely would like to.”

When asked (hypothetically) if Final Fantasy characters and music were to be included in the games, Nobuo remarked that that he wouldn’t mind the implementation of his Final Fantasy compositions via new arrangements.

This comes from my time this afternoon with the Distant Worlds: music from Final Fantasy duo of Nobuo Uematsu and Arnie Roth. More tidbits and transcripts to come!

Super Smash Bros. and Pikmin possible for Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo UK’s Head of Marketing, James Honeywell, has commented on the inevitable question of a Super Smash Bros. title for the Nintendo 3DS, as well as the possibility of a handheld Pikmin title. While neither franchise has ever graced a handheld such as the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, or Nintendo DS (though we did get to imagine a Smash Bros. title for the original Game Boy), the processing power of a Nintendo 3DS coupled with the control freedom of the Circle Pad and touch screen could make a Smash Bros. title or a new Pikmin work fairly decently. Will they happen?

“In theory both [Pikmin 3DS and Super Smash Bros. 3DS] are just as possible or likely – however neither title has been formally announced as being in development.”

Granted, any Nintendo franchise could conceivably be possible or likely (or unlikely) on the 3DS. That said, Iwata has stated that Pikmin would be perfect for the 3DS, which would make Smash “just as likely.” In addition, while “neither title has been formally announced as being in development,” what about informally?

Of course, now we’re just stretching for a confirmation… but would you like to see either one on a 3D handheld? We already know Masahiro Sakurai is experienced in 3DS development…

8-bit demake Super Smash Land coming soon

Friday marks a unique kind of release day: that of a demo for an 8-bit Super Smash Bros. fan demake entitled Super Smash Land. Done in the green pixel palette of the bygone Game Boy era, the demo will feature Mario and Kirby (and later, Pikachu and Link), with the creator Dan Fornace remaining mum on the end number on the final roster. As it is a demake, of course it will not be as slick as the original; the controls have been simplified a bit, omitting the shield. All the same it looks fantastic, especially for a fan effort, and it’s one project I’m praying to Master Hand doesn’t get served with a cease and desist.

Weekly Nintendo Shop Update: December 21, 2009

Since day one on November 19th, 2006, Nintendo has been releasing countless Virtual Console titles, and later WiiWare titles via the Wii Shop Channel. Today marks the release of the 500th title to be released. That 50oth game is none other than the original 64 gem, Super Smash Bros.

It’s really incredible to see how far the game has come comparing Brawl to that initial release. Even Nintendo’s advertising campaign has surely changed, as you can see from the commercial used for the game above.

Why Nintendo waited so long to put these two games on Virtual Console, I’ll never know, but better late than never. The original Super Smash Bros. and Super Mario Kart are both headed to the Wii Shop Channel this upcoming Monday, November 23rd. Super Mario Kart will drift in at 800 points. The price for Super Smash Bros. has not been announced. SNES classic Pilotwings will also be available, price also not yet announced.

Suda 51 wants Travis Touchdown to be a huge star

You know you love No More Heroes protagonist Travis Touchdown. How can you not? He kills people. Violently. And he’s constantly demanding sex from Sylvia. It’s so cute! His creator, Mr. Suda 51, definitely has a soft spot for him, as evidenced in a recent Nintendo Power interview:

I love him, and I want him to be a huge star. That’s why I’m working very hard to make this game as interesting as possible. Maybe in the future, we can see him fighting alongside Link in the next Smash Bros. [laughs] That would be great.

That would be great. I’d love to see him proposition Zero Suit Samus, or drool over the inherent moe-ness of Princess Peach, or slice Marth in two down the middle while yelling obscenities.

Alright, this needs to happen, though I fear for its already slim chances.

Smash Bros. and more head to Japanese VC next month

Would you look at that? The people in charge of the Virtual Console at Nintendo haven’t forgotten about the Nintendo 64! Nintendo’s Japanese website has just posted next month’s release list, and the glaring spotlight is fixed on Super Smash Bros. Of course, like the beloved The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, it will be available for a premium 1,200 Wii Points, but I think it’s a safe bet that a couple hundred yen isn’t going to stop anyone from buying the game.

Will it arrive in North America soon after? Maybe. I’m pretty sure I know a half dozen people back at my old college dorm that will snatch this thing up the minute arrives on the service. For everyone that is already content with having their old cartridge of the game for keepsake and a copy of Brawl for actually playing, the rest of Japan”s January VC release list can be found after the break.

Smash Bros. makes for true a DS “rumble”

Smash Bros. isn’t coming to the DS anytime soon, but that doesn’t seem to stop the fans desperate for the game. Fuzzy has a working homebrew demo of “Super Smash Bros. Rumble” on his website, complete with two playable characters, a handful of stages, and no multiplayer!

It’s a decent start for an ambitious project, and you can go download it and try it out provided you have the means. It’s not like your going to be able to play a completed version of Fuzzy’s game – I’m sure Nintendo’s legal team is already waiting to pounce on the use of Nintendo properties any minute now.

Sakurai says he would consider a Brawl sequel

You know, after making the first two Super Smash Bros. games, leaving HAL and forming Sora, and having to be cornered into making Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you’d think Masahiro Sakurai would be sick of the sequels by now. Luckily for the fans, he only cares that you’re happy, and it looks like he’s open to a sequel. In the distant, distant future.

Sakurai confirmed several details with ONM for their latest issue, including that a Brawl sequel would have to do more than simply add more characters to the existing 39 (what? I thought there were 35?). There were also several more characters and several other game concepts that were left out due to time constraints. It ain’t easy squeezing all that into a game within three years.

“It’s taken over three years to make Brawl but I actually stopped trying to include new ideas early on in development.

“What happened in the next year and a half was that we distilled the game down, worked out which ideas we had time to include and which we didn’t. Sadly, we had to trim out many great concepts just to keep within the time contraints. I had a lot more characters, for example.. but sadly I can’t discuss which ones didn’t make it.

“There are 39 characters in the game this time around and just adding a few more wouldn’t be enough to justify a new game in my opinion; I’d have to draw a line in the sand and have a new approach to make it worthwhile. As long as the fans enjoy it, though, that’s what matters and in the distant future, I guess that might be something I have to consider.”
