Ah, Waluigi–seasoned member of the Mario universe’s second string. A tenacious group of modders has decided to bring him front and center through a Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod, giving him his own sets of moves and animations in addition to a spot on the roster.

More papercraft for today! This particular template is based off of the Yoshi model used in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. From the looks of it, this a pretty big model… but don’t try and squeeze it just because it looks cute — it’s still a hollow paper shell!

When Snake was revealed to be included in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the floodgates opened for third-party characters that fans wanted to see included in the game. While the only other addition to this category ended up being Sonic, rumors were flying about other characters filling up the now-”Random” spot, rumors including Geno and Mega Man, among others.

The only requirement? They had to have appeared previously on a Nintendo system. Alas, had this not been a rule and if it weren’t for big egos, the characters in the video above would have at least had a glimmer of hope for inclusion. For now, though, you can just watch and see what it might have been like if Master Chief and Cloud managed to get into the game. If the creators had included Mario and Sonic, this video would have been even more perfect.

Some of the members over at the Dolphin forums have been using a PC to render their Wii games in a “panorama screenshot” mode. For Wii games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it simply takes the game and expands the view to the left and right, giving you the amazing views you see above (click them for a larger version).

It doesn’t work quite as well for GameCube games (most of which don’t support widescreen) and games with variable-width HUDs (like Metroid Prime and Super Mario Galaxy), but games like Brawl and Pikmin make this little trick worth it.

Earlier this month, North America celebrated…erm, rather, blatantly forgot about… the fact that it was Super Smash Bros. Brawl‘s 2nd birthday in North America. Heck, even Europe will be celebrating Brawl’s 2nd birthday later this summer. Korea? Well, they’re only just getting the game on April 29th.

Wasn’t the point of Nintendo expanding into the Korean market to satisfy demand for Nintendo games and reduce piracy? I’m pretty sure if you’re going to not release a game for two years, those gamers are going to *find* a way to obtain the game in the meantime. Let’s get on the ball, Nintendo!

Despite IGN’s persistent claims that a Wii Kid Icarus title is in the works, it seems more like some bad information. Yoshio Sakamoto, one of the creators of the Nintendo classic Kid Icarus, hasn’t heard anything about a new version of the game. Sakamoto spoke with Kotaku, sadly denying the existence of any next gen title.

“I don’t know personally about any project underway regarding Kid Icarus,” Sakamoto said. “[However] if so many of those people are interested in it and really want to see it on the Wii, they should really speak up.”

Based on Pit’s presence in Super Smash Bros. Brawl alone, I find it hard to believe that Nintendo doesn’t know we all want a new Kid Icarus title. I guess we’ll just have to add it to the list of “why aren’t you on the Wii” titles, like Starfox, Pilotwings and Luigi’s Mansion 2.

Mario’s first console bound, 2D title since Super Mario World debuted with great success across the world.  Sales figures for Japan have been released, and the chubby plumber managed to sell a whopping 937,000 units.  That impressive number not only makes New Super Mario Bros. Wii the highest first week sales for a Wii title to date, but it also beats previous record breaker Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Looks like Mario has beat Mario! It should also be noted that 420,000 of those units sold where purchased on the first day. “Woo hoo!”

Jean-Pierre Treiber, 45, escaped from a high-security prison in Auxerre, France by hiding inside a box he had built. The double murder suspect – who has consistently claimed innocence – was loaded with several other boxes onto a truck for delivery to the Yonne region southeast of Paris and about 100 miles away. Treiber leapt from the truck without the driver noticing.

As you know, this kind of stealth tactic was made famous in our circle thanks to the Metal Gear Solid series. Who knew it was actually a legitimate method of sneaking around? Go figure.

Photographer Greg De Stefano has put together quite the photo shoot starring the characters of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Not everyone is represented (sorry those looking for a full suited Samus), but there are some really nice, and often humorous, pictures. My favorites include a debilitated Sonic and some cuddling Ice Climbers. Maybe I’m just a sucker for cuddling. Check out the full set at De Stefano’s site.

A brand new way to hack the Wii has been discovered. For ages, the only simple way to hack a Wii was to use the Twilight Hack, which uses a hacked save file for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess to run homebrew apps such as the Homebrew Channel installer. This new method involves a hacked custom stage file for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The most significant way in which this differs from the Twilight Hack is that you don’t need to copy a custom save file to your Wii, meaning it’s much more difficult/impossible for Nintendo to fix with a firmware update. The hack has not been made available for public use yet, but it is apparently coming soon. Check out the above video for a demonstration. (The good stuff doesn’t start until just before the minute mark, so feel free to skip ahead.)

Rather than show off the ultimate game meant for hardcore Nintendo fans at the time during their main E3 press conference, Nintendo decided to unveil the sequel to Super Smash Bros. Melee behind closed doors. In this video, the audio has been replaced (courtesy of 4colorrebellion.com) with that of the sounds that came from that exclusive room, where members of the press first learned of Pit’s entry into the ring, Wario’s gaseous attack, and the extended invitation for Solid Snake himself to enter the battle.

Of course, you absolutely remember the floodgates that opened up, now that third party characters were a possibility in the exclusive Nintendo fighter. Luckily, it led to the inclusion of one more third party character that would end a bitter, 17-year rivalry.

Barely a year after the launch of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in North America and Europe, the in-game “Smash Service” will see a partial end. The following was posted on the Dojo just recently:

As of June 30th, 2009, the current service that accepts user-generated snapshots, stage designs, and replay data will no longer be available. Please note, however, that we will continue to distribute such data after that date.

Yep, that means no more sharing of your best stages after next month. Hopefully, this just means that Nintendo’s archived about a bajillion pieces of downloadable content that they’ve deemed acceptable and have yet to share, instead of merely looping everything that’s already been made available. In either case, better upload your best in the next few weeks!

Japanese gaming magazine Gemaga interviewed some of the industry’s biggest developers recently regarding all kinds of subjects.

Capcom’s Keiji Inafune, for example, remarked that he would never make a casual game like Brain Age. He also says he was correct in predicting that the Wii would come out on top this console generation, but wasn’t (at the time) convinced of the selling power of the DS. Namco’s Akira Yoshizumi mentioned that the battle system innovations in the upcomimg Wii Tales of game will “greatly impress people.” Level 5′s Akihiro Hino states that Dragon Quest IX is in the final stages, and the multiplayer mode will be different from every other online RPG to date. He also says that The Another World, a DS RPG collaboration between Level 5 and anime studio Studio Ghibli is still planned for 2009. Yoshiki Sugiyama of KOEI stated that he was impressed with Super Smash Bros. Brawl and he hopes that Wii owners will like Samurai Warriors 3. Finally, Super Robot Wars producer Terada hints that his team may “reposition development” in the second half of 2009.
