You’d think at this point that the Internet would have already exhausted ancient Mario artifacts. How wrong. How very very wrong. This early Super Mario Bros. 3 footage was dug up from a Japanese video game show inserted as a VHS supplement to the 80s magazine Famigama. Savvy eyed fans will note differences in the HUD, and a few unrecognizable levels and textures. Edits and notes on the video are ongoing, so speak up on the YouTube comments section if you see something new!

The person who did this is a genius. A wicked, wicked, genius by the name of Jane Labowitch. I don’t know whether to praise her or build a bridge out of her. Maybe test her weight, see how she measures up against a duck. What I’m saying is, it’s a level of geek craft mastery I’ve yet to comprehend. Kudos to artist Jane, AKA Princess Etch A Sketch. I think it’s time you got promoted to Queen.

The booklet insert from Nintendo’s 25th anniversary re-release of Super Mario All-Stars, covering the history of the epic series, reveals some tasty tidbits about the series never before revealed. In one section, the wording suggests that Nintendo strongly considered dropping the Tanooki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3, with creator Shigeru Miyamoto remarking:

“Even though I knew it wouldn’t make sense to some non-Japanese players…I was so excited about it that I left it in.”

I’m kind of glad he did, as cultural tidbits like these encouraged me to be curious about other cultures at a young age. Oh to think what might have been if it’d been removed! What would Tanooki be without its namesake? The Kuribo Shoe? It just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Any gamer will tell you, the best part of Super Mario Bros. 3 was the inclusion of star road. Right? Oh, that wasn’t Super Mario Bros. 3? Am I confusing that epic game with Super Mario World?

Clearly I’m not that misinformed, but if you caught episode 18 of Glee, you can tell the writers are. I’m not sure how an error like the above video actually makes it on air. Not one gamer that read the script noted the mix up? Shame!

While I understand the game, I’ve never actually played beer pong – I don’t really like beer, and I definitely don’t like household objects floating in my drinks. That’s not to say I’ll never play the game, especially if I can find an enticing reason to.

Enter this 6′ x 2.5′ Super Mario Bros. 3-themed beer pong table by Dan Byckalo. He created it over 100 hours thanks to an injury giving him some free time. The table itself actually features all eight worlds from the game, as well as most (if not all) the major items, power-ups, enemies, characters, and so on. Yes, Tanooki Mario is in there, too!

The board can also be used for Flip Cup, Card Games, and more. Be sure to watch the video above and marvel at the amount of work and dedication that went into this project. According to Dan, if he gets time, he may look into doing a Sonic version of the table, since he (and I, and all cool people) actually grew up on Sonic games first.

Nothing makes a gamer feel older than realizing a mega anniversary of one of their favorite titles is fast approaching. Case in point; Super Mario Bros. 3 is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This past February, the game turned 20 here in North America.

Aside from the bummer of getting old and crotchety, we gamers owe Mario a well deserved round of applause. Super Mario Bros. 3 helped define the genre, the future of side-scrolling platformers, and heavily influenced all future Mario titles. From level design, to impressionable enemies, to the game’s catchy soundtrack, SMB 3 had it all. The introduction of airships and the Koopalings were heavily applauded, both of which luckily have been revived in recent titles.

The game even introduced an extremely diverse set of power-ups, most notably the Tanooki suit, which inspired the name of a certain website. The magical suit allowed Mario to transform between a flying raccoon and a stone statue. Other fan favorites included the adorable frog suit and Kuribo’s shoe, aka “the boot.” Despite being a beloved power-up, many never realized that Kuribo’s shoe only appeared in one level of the game; 5-3.

Super Mario Bros. 3 also penetrated other mediums. The star studded cult classic film The Wizard served as a promotional piece for the game’s release. And who could forget the cartoon series based on the game, The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

With twenty years behind us, let us toast Mario before his next galactic adventure. To twenty more years of power-ups, mustaches and saving the princess. “Here-we-go!” Be sure to share with us some of your favorite Mario moments from Super Mario Bros. 3!

It’s always a Super Mario Bros. 3-fest around here, so you can imagine how big this news must be. As it turns out, New Super Mario Bros. Wii will officially mark the return of the Koopalings as enemies in an old school Mario platformer. See that? Morton Koopa Jr., no question. Word on the street is that Larry Koopa’s been seen in the show floor demo as well.

Now all we need is the Tanooki Suit for a classic Sky World duel vs. Roy Koopa. Insta-buy.

…ouch. Kinda steep, but then again, it IS a hoodie. Not only that, it’s possibly the most awesome hoodie I’ve ever seen! It’s even got EARS on the hood! Did you all know about this? Why didn’t I know about this before??

Something tells me this has been around for some time now, though. That link below takes you to a page where you can email your friends about it, and a Google search will turn up several eBay and Craigs List sellers offering to sell you theirs, but I wasn’t able to find it for sale on the Hot Topic website. *tear*

FCEUX is a NES emulator that allows the use of scripts to modify NES games. There are scripts that allow you to directly manipulate in game objects, or cause snow to fall, or, in this case, turn Super Mario Bros. 3 into a Kirby’s Canvas Curse style game. With the script enabled, controls (except for jump) are disabled. Mario continuously walks forward, turning around after spending a certain amount of time walking into a wall. You can draw lines that propel Mario in any direction with the mouse. These same lines are used to protect Mario from projectiles and turn enemies into clouds of bloody mist. It’s great fun. You’ll have to supply your own self-ripped Super Mario Bros. 3 rom that you totally made yourself out of your own copy of the game for backup purposes and would never, ever download illegally, though.

Same guy, same precision drumming, same amazing set, but the soundtrack to an even better game!

I get buried in emails on a daily basis, but every so often I manage to sludge through them and find a diamond in the rough. What you’re looking at it is a 17,000 push-pin mosaic mural, a product of three revisions and a total of two and a half semesters of work. The final revision took a whopping two months of work by the CIS Student Association at the University of the Fraser Valley, and it’s currently sitting in the Student Computing Center over there.

You’d think I’d be able to relate to these college kids, but I can’t even remember when I’ve had enough free time to do something so crafty! You can check past the break for a few more photos, but be sure to check out Ranadok’s Flickr profile for more. Thanks to Robert for the heads up!

Even though Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, to this day I still wonder who came up with the idea of having Super Mario inside a giant sock jumping on Goombas. I understand that it is located deep inside the vaults of various Nintendo Big Wig’s brains, but I can only imagine how silly it must have sounded to others during a Super Mario Bros. 3 development staff meeting. These age old wonders haven’t stopped talented crocheter from constructing Mario himself tucked away inside Kuribo’s shoe.

Looks like it’s time to dust off the old classic controller, and find this shoe again on Super Mario Bros. 3 and ponder yet another question. Why in the world can the sock jump on spikes? Thanks Adriel for the tip!

This week, we’ll listen to the The Big Band Of Rogues perform the ending theme to Super Mario Bros. 3, as performed at the Nihon Seinenkan Hall back on September 14th, 2003. It’s not the greatest jazz band in the world, but I’ll bet if any of them are gamers, they’re having a ton of fun.

That said, there are no gamers in that saxophone section. I think I’ve seen drying paint that’s more exciting to watch. Keep that in mind, you current or aspiring musicians – the performance is just an important as the ability to play a piece!
