New artwork of the Blue Knight

We’re less than three months from Sonic and the Black Knight, so you can expect more media to surface from here on out. We’ve already got the box art, and we’re getting even more official artwork today that will no doubt show up in the black and white instruction manuals. Yes!

How’s everyone feeling about this game so far? I’m pretty sure if it’s just as decent or slightly better than Secret Rings and graphics on par with where devs should be by this point in the Wii’s lifetime, I’ll be satisfied. For now.

‘Black Knight’ introduces Sonic Storybook Series

When Sonic and the Black Knight arrives here in March, it will come bearing a new sub-franchise name that I assume will retroactively include Sonic and the Secret Rings. The newly unveiled North American box art, which you can view in full after the break, shows the above “Sonic Storybook Series” label. The box art is pretty sick too, so you’ll definitely want to check it out.

The only thing is, after the Arabian Nights and King Arthur, what’s left? I mean, sure there are tons of legends and fantasy stories out there, but what else matches the classic magnitude of those two?

Sonic and the Black Knight trailer

Published by Christian
Tags: Sonic and the Black Knight, Wii

It’s going to bother me all night. The music in this trailer sounds like it’s trying to be an arrangement of “His World,” but at the same time it reminds me much more of a different melody that’s on the tip of my tongue. If anyone can figure it out, you’ll be my favorite person for the rest of the evening.

In the meantime, you can enjoy watching the trailer above, wondering what it’d be like if Sonic, swinging that sword around as he zips from place to place, were to accidentally slice the ropes he grinds on.

Sonic drops in with a dozen new screens

I’m not going to lie, I’m both very excited and very worried for Sonic and the Black Knight. On one hand, we’ve got another motion controlled, Wii-exclusive Sonic game tackling an established legend. The last time that happened, we had a poorly paced but enjoyably solid platformer called Sonic and the Secret Rings. On the other hand, we’re giving Sonic a sword. The last time they gave a hedgehog a tactile weapon, we ended up with Shadow the Hedgehog.

On the plus side, the game visually looks centuries ahead of Sonic’s Arabian adventure (in more ways than one, hehe). You can check out twelve new screens of the game added after the break.

There it is, the cover scan for the September issue of Nintendo Power. Looks so much better than a camera or cell phone photo, right? He actually looks blue this time!

Nintendo Power details Sonic and the Black Knight

The September 2008 issue of Nintendo Power has been received by the masses, and we now have some solid details on Sonic and the Black Knight. By “some,” I mean a freakin’ ton of new information can be found after the break, with much of it straight from the magazine. The game seems to carry a lot over from Secret Rings, which makes sense considering it’s the same development team. At the same time, there are several new game mechanics that might both excite you and worry you.

At the same time, the team is well aware of how the series has stumbled as of late, and they’re making sure they’re doing right by the series. Awesome, now lets shoot some ballistas.

Sonic and the medieval scans from Camelot

Published by Christian
Tags: SEGA, Sonic and the Black Knight, Wii

We’ll have to sit tight while we wait for direct feed screens from SEGA, so magazine scans of Sonic and the Black Knight will have to do for now. Given the fact that these are low-quality magazine scans, the game doesn’t look half bad, visually. In fact, it looks leaps and bounds better than Sonic and the Secret Rings does - which was one of the best-looking Wii games as of February 2007. Sadly, they also look better than the Wii version scans of Sonic Unleashed.

You can see all nine scan images after the break. Leave comments! What do you think?

Sonic and the Black Knight officially announced

Published by Christian
Tags: SEGA, Sonic and the Black Knight, Wii

Here we go. This is about as official as it gets. We now have the official press release for Sonic and the Black Knight, courtesy of SEGA’s website. The full release is after the break, but it looks like the game - due out next spring - will use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk configuration rather than the horizontal Wii Remote a la Sonic and the Secret Rings. In addition, the game will switch between 2D and 3D perspectives, probably in response to Sonic Unleashed’s direction with game perspective.

Keeping optimistic, that makes three “good” Sonic games I’ll have to get within the next nine months. I’ll have to start eating at Subway again to fatten up my wallet.

Black Knight confirms: Sonic is the new Thomas Ian Nicholas

Published by Christian
Tags: SEGA, Sonic and the Black Knight, Wii

Anyone remember the movie A Kid in Aladdin’s Palace, starring Thomas Ian Nicholas as Calvin Fuller? Last year’s Sonic and the Secret Rings kind of reminded me of that movie, with the whole throwing of a “modern” character into the universe of Scheherazade. The movie, though, was a sequel to 1995’s A Kid in King Arthur’s Court - you know, with all the no-names like Thomas Ian Nicholas, Kate Winslet, and Daniel Craig. Coincidentally, Camelot is just where Sonic and the Black Knight is headed come spring of next year:

Sonic returns to the Wii™ on a wild ride through a storybook world of Arthurian legend in his all-new adventure, Sonic and the Black Knight™. Designed exclusively for the Wii, Sonic and the Black Knight brings a new twist to Sonic gameplay by combining Sonic’s legendary speed with frenetic swordplay action that makes full use of the unique Wii control system.

In this strange, enchanted medieval world, Sonic wields a sword in his effort to save the day. Encountering many friends and foes along the way, Sonic shows them what it takes to be a true hero and the ultimate knight. Master the sword and unravel the mystery behind this intriguing adventure…

That’s the definitive confirmation, straight from the game’s official listing on SEGA.com. What do you think? Knuckles as Lancelot? Tails as Merlin? Monty Python’s Black Knight as… the Black Knight?

SEGA forum admin confirms Sonic’s trip to Camelot

Published by Christian
Tags: SEGA, Sonic and the Black Knight, Wii

So we’ve got the magazine photo. We’ve got the internet domain registration. Now all we need is a confirmation from SEGA. Whoops, we actually already have that too. Things are moving pretty quickly today!

Clumsyorchid, one of the admins on SEGA.com’s web forums and apparently a SEGA rep who’s in-the-know, confirmed that Sonic and the Black Knight does indeed exist.

I can confirm the game is indeed real, however you won’t get any info on it from me, you’ll have to wait until we post the product page tomorrow on SEGA.com and read the Nintendo Power article. Discuss!

It doesn’t get much clearer than that!
