Social networking has become a permanent fixture among gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3. Even the Nintendo DS has Facebook functionality for their built-in photo application. Now four years after its launch, the Wii will get its first taste of social networking with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

In an interview with Nintendojo, Vicarious Visions (developers of the Wii version of Warriors of Rock) shared their excitement to lead the social initiative on the console. “We are the first Wii title to support social networking sites, with Facebook and Twitter,” said Joe Fisher, the game’s producer. “We’ve also incorporated a Wii award system, so when you do specific challenges in the game, you get credited for an award.”

Now you’ll be able to share all your achievements with friends using the two popular social websites. How do you feel about games taking the initiative to allow sharing game stats with friends outside of the game?

Is one of the world’s most successful online mob based video games getting the film treatment? No. But it sounded like it was going to happen for a hot minute.

According to website Pajiba, Zynga’s insanely popular online game Mafia Wars was going to be turned into a movie. The crime based social networking game allows players to rise in rank through executing jobs, buying weapons and managing real estate.

Despite sounding like the perfect formula for a blockbuster Hollywood flick, Radar Pictures (the rumored development company behind the film) denies the report. However, Radar employee Mike Weber admits that it does “sound like a good idea for a movie.”

Although Mafia Wars isn’t going to be on the big screen, maybe we can still hold out hope for a possible FarmVille motion picture? If Disney can make a Pirate of the Caribbean flick based off a theme park ride, anything can happen.

Microsoft recently updated their Xbox 360 with Facebook functionality, allowing those who game to also check in and stalk their friends and non-friends.  Well since then, the company has released figures that prove the social networking initiative to be quite a success.  More than 2 million people logged into Facebook via their Xbox 360 consoles in the first week of the service.  Additionally, 500,000 accounts were created during that first day alone.

Although not everyone’s cup of tea, you have to applaud gaming companies for trying to bring a more social atmosphere to a gamer’s world.  There aren’t many other mediums where you could be content sitting alone in a room for 8 hours straight. Maybe its good that gaming companies are trying to intervene, and keep you tied to society.
