Silent Hill fans, never fear. Konami is not through with the series yet. At a press event in San Francisco last week, they announced a new game in the popular psychological horror series. Reports on the new game are scarce, but Joystiq suggests the game will be another re-imaging, a la Shattered Memories, this one of Silent Hill 2. 1UP also notes that Czech studio Vatra Games will be working on the game, the third company in five years to take on Silent Hill. Not even a title is known thus far, but we do know it will be available on PS3, XBOX 360, and PC.

We’ll tell update you here when we actually have something to tell! An official reveal has been promised for E3.

Looks like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories didn’t disappear from Australian release lists after all. The game, distributed locally by Mindscape, simply received a delay, and someone forget to tell the entire country.

Shattered Memories will now arrive in Oz on April 22nd (Earth Day!) for $79.95, and will be available at most game retailers including Gamesmen, GamesWarehouse.com.au, select Harvey Norman stores, JB Hi-Fi, and more (but not EB Games).

Interestingly enough, it’s too soon to say that the game’s Australian release has been quietly canceled, because spot reports suggest that the game has been available in some locations, such as GameTraders. I’m not Australian, but I’m under the impression that this is an import store, which might explain the availability. If this is the case, it looks like others hoping to play this title will have to look for similar import outlets, because that may be the only way this game makes it Down Under.

Capcom and Sega have recently publicized their issues selling their mature titles on the Wii console, such as games like Dead Space: Extraction and RE: Darkside Chronicles.  Lead designer of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories has offered his opinion on why titles like these haven’t been selling on the Wii.  Sam Barlow thinks on-rails shooters are to blame, not the Wii.

Without badmouthing people, a lot of the games they’ve been complaining about are rail shooters and a rail shooter wouldn’t have sold no matter what platform you put it on because it’s a rail shooter and that’s a niche genre that had its heyday back in the Dreamcast era.

Barlow strongly believes the quality of a mature title will bring sales, if the developer can truly bring what the gamer wants.

If they really enjoy a good horror story, they should enjoy this so we’ve tried to create a product that has broad appeal but does something really good and unique.

Sigh of relief, horror fans! Despite rumors to the contrary, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories will be available this holiday season. The game, a reimagining of the first Silent Hill title, was a big hit at E3 this year, walking away with three “Best of E3″ awards in the Wii category (best overall game, best adventure game and best graphics technology).

However, despite this happy news, there might have been at least a little truth behind the rumors. The release dates of the PS2 and PSP versions of the game have yet to be announced, leading some to speculate that the much-feared delay was in reference to those versions only. Others, meanwhile, are rejoicing over the rare Wii exclusivity. Me, I’m just asking for a few pairs of new skivvies for Christmas. If I end up playing this game, I’m gonna need ‘em.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for Wii is available December 8.

I’m not big on horror movies, and I’m fine with survival/horror games in smaller chunks. Still, I can see why people enjoy the genre, and that’s exactly Silent Hill: Shattered Memories producer Tomm Hulett’s reasoning in developing the game for the Wii’s large but casual fanbase.

“For the casual gamer, we say this like it’s strange, but casual gamers go to horror movies. There’s a reason that we all started playing survival horror — it was new and different and, ‘Oh, it’s like scary movie that I play.’”

Makes sense so far.

“I’ve had my mom try it out and she only plays Animal Crossing, but she can walk around as Harry Mason and run from creatures. It’s really easy to pick up and play. If there’s a casual gamer who enjoys going to the movies and seeing The Ring, they can go to the store afterward and buy Silent Hill and have a horror experience at home.”

There we go. We need more casual gamers and more moms like Mr. Hulett’s mom.

The folks over at IGN had the idea of snooping around the E3 show floor and managed to get some pictures of Wii and DS related set ups that give us a heads up as to what Nintendo and some third parties are going to be planning for tomorrow. No doubt that Nintendo will have some huge surprises that won’t be put on the show floor until they’re fully revealed at the press conference tomorrow (9am Pacific, 11am Central), but until then… Sin and Punishment 2!

The cover story of the new Nintendo Power features a brand new not-really-a-remake of Silent Hill for Wii called Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Rather than a straight remake, according to the game’s producer, Tomm Hulett, it’s a “re-imagining” of the first game, with enough changes to make it feel like a whole new game. The basic premise is the same (you play as the same character, with the same goal), but points of the story will change depending on the player’s actions.

The control stick will control Harry, the main character, and the flashlight will be controlled with the pointer. When Harry sees certain things under the light of the flashlight, he’ll respond vocally. There will be no load times, and the Wii remote speaker will be used as a your cell phone. Perhaps the most interesting change is the complete removal of combat. You’ll have no way to defend yourself and will have to run from enemies, making this a true survival horror game.
