Next Nintendo Console to be Less Innovative?

Published by Joey

Satoru IwataWhile the Wii continues to enjoy reccord-shattering sales around the world, Nintendo, as expected, is already working on the Wii’s next-gen successor. Considering that Nintendo opted for a more revolutionary user-interface instead of enhanced graphical capabilities for the Wii, one might suspect something similar from Nintendo for its next console. However, according to a recent Forbes interview with president Satoru Iwata, “Wii 2″ might not bring as many new ideas to the table as we had previously thought.

Iwata confirms gyroscopes in Wii MotionPlus

Back in the old days, back before the “Revmote,” rumors were flying as to what the big deal was and why Nintendo wouldn’t even show a picture of the Revolution controller. Motion control was pretty much agreed on by the fans, but they expected gyroscopes instead of accelerometers. It looks like Wii MotionPlus will finally be bringing what we’ve been waiting for all along. Satoru Iwata explains:

The idea is something we’ve been contemplating for quite a long time. My understanding about the timing, the reason we are announcing this kind of attachment right now, is because we have come to the stage where we can purchase a significant amount of the gyroscope technology at a reasonable price point, and the stability of this kind of technology itself has been confirmed, so that’s why we’re making this announcement today.

Awesome. Now let’s see that Zelda demo from Space World 2000 being controlled by Wii MotionPlus! Hey, I can dream, right?

Nintendo President apologizes for lackluster E3

With the show in Los Angeles just wrapping up last week, it didn’t take long for a formal apology from the Nintendo camp to surface. In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata went on record to try and win back the core gamers that were left with a bad taste in their mouth:

If there is any perception that Nintendo is ignoring the core gamers, it’s a misunderstanding and we really want to get rid of that misunderstanding by any means… We are sorry about [the E3] media briefings, specifically for those who were expecting to see Nintendo show something about Super Mario or Legend of Zelda. However, the fact of the matter is the so-called ‘big titles’ need a long, long development period. … We really didn’t think this year’s E3 media briefing was the time to do so.

I completely agree with not showing a game until it is ready, but even a short clip or a screen shot or a logo would have sufficed. It is reassuring that somewhere, some form of a “hardcore” title is being worked on by Nintendo. Why is the world so cruel?
