Atlus’ Catherine for PS3 opened by moving over 140,000 copies in four days… enough to top beat out every other games’ sales for the entire week. Capcom’s Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds came in a distant second at just over 67,000 PS3 copies sold in those same four days.

Most hardware, including the individual models of the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, saw declines from last week. Those numbers are as follows:

Sony has announced that they have officially shipped over 150 million PlayStation 2 consoles worldwide. The system launched to massive hype in Japan on March 4, 2000. The 150 million milestone was reached just under eleven years later, on January 31, 2011.

Along with the massive hardware shipments, a game library of 10,828 games have combined to sell over 1,527,000,000 software copies. Yep, that’s over 1.5 billion software units sold as of December 2010, which Sony credits largely in part to exclusives such as Gran Turismo, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and SingStar, as well as to third party support.

Despite nearing its eleventh birthday, the PlayStation 2 is expected to see continued success, particularly in East Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America. By comparison, the PlayStation 3 has shipped roughly a third of the PS2′s hardware totals in just over four years.

As far as Japanese hardware sales go, Nintendo and Sony were virtually tied in 2010 when all is said and done. The Nintendo DS, which has for years maintained an undisputed lead in the Japanese market, was edged out by Sony’s PSP. Combined sales for the DS totaled 2,717,544 during the calendar year, while the PSP managed to move 2,729,718 units.

On the home console side of things, the Wii remained on top, but only just. Sony’s PS3 kept pace with Nintendo, selling 1,542,258 units compared to the Wii’s 1,592,563 units sold. Xbox 360 trailed with 231,258 Xbox 360s sold, while Sony’s PlayStation 2 rounded out hardware sales, selling 83,030 units.

Disappointingly, the third entry into the Parasite Eve franchise came in 6th place, but The 3rd Birthday managed to sell a decent 140,000 units in its first 5 days (it launched on a Wednesday). Namco’s own AKB1/48: If I loved an Idol managed to launch at #2, behind Capcom’s continuing juggernaut of Monster Hunter Freedom 3. Last week’s #2, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3, also from Bandai Namco, dropped to #14.

All hardware, including the individual models of the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, understandably saw an increase in sales over law week. Those numbers are as follows:

The year’s sales totals through November are in, thanks to Media Create. Pokémon Black and White combined to take top honors, selling nearly 4.5 million units, trailed closely by New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which inched past the 4 million mark. Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3 came in at a distant third, just shy of selling 2 million units.

It’s been pointed out that since the numbers after the break run only through November, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd does not appear due to it not being released a day (or more) sooner. Taking its sales of over 3 million units into account, it would easily slide into 3rd on this list.

As of this Sunday, December 26th, New Super Mario Bros. has sold 6,015,255 units in Japan according to Enterbrain’s figures. This makes the Mario platformer the first DS game to surpass 6 million units in sales in the country of Japan, doing so in only four years, seven months, and three days from its May 25, 2006 launch.

The game continues to have strong legs, even as the Nintendo DS is entering its twilight weeks. Given the hype surrounding the Nintendo 3DS, it will be interesting to see if a Mario game — or any game, for that matter — can experience the long-term succes that New Super Mario Bros. has seen!

Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, has revealed to Reuters that PlayStation Network sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 are on track to nearly double last year’s sales total of 36 billion yen ($434.3 million) during fiscal 2009 (ending March 2010).

What does all this growth mean? It means the PlayStation Network will finally stop operating at a loss! …soon. Hirai expects the service to turn its first profits sometime during 2011. He also notes that PSN sales should continue to grow exponentially, reaching roughly $300 billion yen ($3.6 billion) in a couple years for fiscal 2012 thanks largely in part to the over 50 million registered PSN users worldwide.

The latest sales figures for Apple’s iPad are in, and it looks like the semi-useless magical tablet is a hot commodity. Over 2 million units have been sold thus far, since the iPad’s April 3rd debut. Interestingly enough, the iPad just went on sale earlier this week in Japan, Australia and several European countries. Next month’s sales figures will be even more interesing.

With both Wi-Fi and 3G versions on the market, Apple is having a hard time stocking the device. Likely, I’ll hold out for the second generation with the inevitable built in iSight, larger storage capacity and… flash support? Well, maybe the first two.

If Nintendo can stay the course, and there’s little doubt they can’t, their DS handheld will become the best selling console of all time by the end of the year. According to NPD analysis Anita Frazier, by “October or November” the DS will have surpassed the current record holder, Sony’s PlayStation 2.

Already selling close to 130 million units, the DS is likely going into a territory few consoles will ever compete with. Of course to its advantage over the PS2, the DS has seen many different models with slight improvements. With the differences between the DS Phat to the DSi, it’s almost like two different handhelds. I’m sure many people upgraded from one to the other, including myself, boosting the overall console sales.

Still, a DS is a DS. Congratulations to the Nintendo DS. That’s quite an accomplishment!

It looks like Nintendo’s being a bit more conservative with their sales expectations for Super Mario Galaxy 2 in Japan. The game’s initial shipment for Japan is reported to be in the 500,000 to 600,000 range, which is slightly lower than the initial shipment of the original Super Mario Galaxy. Considering how abysmal the total sales for the first game were (when compared to other Mario titles), this should be no surprise.

Comparitively, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was a much bigger success in Japan, so you’d have to assume that part of the reason for the inclusion of 2D gameplay and what’s essentially a 2D hub/map in Galaxy 2 was brought on by the success of NSMBW.

Looks like those uncertain by the “magical” abilities of Apple’s debut tablet can rest assured, the device is a success. Less than a full month being on the market, Apple’s much hyped iPad just hit the 1 million mark. With over 1 million units sold within 28 days, it’s quite a testament to the appeal and allure of a tablet device.

“One million iPads in 28 days — that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “Demand continues to exceed supply, and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

With the iPod Touch, iPhone and now iPad all now viable gaming platforms, it looks like gaming on portable Apple devices will only continue to prosper.

Today’s gaming deal of the day has been found on Amazon.com. Earlier this week, Nintendo revealed a new white DSi bundle that includes Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story for the regularly console’s regular price. Likely due to this, Amazon has lowered the price of the standard white DSi, now on sale for $129.99.

Not so bad when the regularly price handheld is $169.99. This will make the choice of getting DSi or DSi XL a lot easier if money is your decision maker.

Ubisoft is singing a happy tune today as it’s just been announced their waggle and swing dance title Just Dance has sold more than 2 million copies since launch. The game released in November, meaning sales accounted for are just a mere span of 5 months. And I’m sure those addictively awesome commercials didn’t hurt!

“The consumer response to Just Dance has been overwhelming,” said John Parkes, EMEA marketing director at Ubisoft. “With Just Dance’s success we’ve seen a renewal of the music video game genre, as this is truly a game that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

Just Dance has players holding the Wii Remote and dancing to more than 30 tracks from artists like Katy Perry, MC Hammer, Cyndi Lauper, Gorillaz and The Spice Girls.
