Is Luigi about to get a little help in the ghost sucking department? According to MyNintendoNews, Nintendo Europe recently put up a listing for Luigi’s Mansion 2, and among other details, stated that the sequel will be two player. Examining the page, however, it appears that they either fixed a typo (the side panel says it’s a one player game) or playing Skyrim ten hours a day is affecting my eyesight more than I thought, ’cause I can’t find any mention of it.

So was this mere error, or fact? I can’t even conceive of a two player Luigi’s Mansion, but I’m sure it’d be facilitated by StreetPass. Which would be better, co-op or versus? And the second player should be Mario, right?

Here’s a fun rumor. Did I say fun? I mean this is a sheer masochism. According the sleuthing of SystemLink Nintendo, Rockstar Leeds, the developers of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, may have been working on an open world title for the Nintendo DS. An online resume listing by a former AI programmer who worked for Rockstar Leeds, read in part:

“Later I worked on an unannounced DS title set in a full 3D open world. For this title I worked on various AI Systems including a complex hand to hand combat system.”

Given how unlikely it is that Rockstar would continue to develop for the DS, the listing is probably referencing a cancelled title that will never see the light of day. Still though… fully 3D AND open world? I hope to the gaming gods the “DS” was a typo, and they programmer meant “3DS”, and this is for a title still on the way. Yeah, that’s what happened.

It seems that when the NGP is showcased at the E3 Expo next week, it will do so under a new call sign. An E3 proof sheet has reportedly surfaced from two separate sources with the next generation portable donning a “PS Vita” logo. Vita, as many have pointed out, comes from the Latin/Italian for “life.” Others have pointed out that it’s the first creative name Sony has ever given to gaming system.

What do you think? Legit? The Vita name isn’t necessarily new, as it floated around months ago as a possible codename for the PSP2. If Sony does intend to launch it as PS Vita, we’ll find out by Monday at E3!

It appears the next installment of the Uncharted series is about to get sandy. Nathan Drake’s high-action adventures are rumored to be set within an African desert territory for the third Uncharted game, according to an “informed source” to Kotaku.

The previous entries in the series featured ice-cold mountains and muggy jungles, so an expedition set in warm weather would be a welcome change for Nathan.

There’s also a rumor we’ll get some Uncharted 3 news confirmation during the Spike TV’s Video Game Awards, scheduled for December 12. We’ll update you once more information is revealed.

We at The Tanooki love Twitter, so much so that you should follow us! But aside from shameless self promotion, we love Twitter because it’s so easy for game developers to reveal tidbits about their upcoming projects, without waiting for the publisher’s standard press release.

Platinum Games designer Hideki Kamiya seemingly confirmed that Bayonetta 2 is in the works. Kamiya was responding to a tweeter asking about DLC for the first game.

Here’s a blood-filled rumor for you to sink your zombified teeth into. Sources say a sequel to the 2009 Wii on-rails zombie killing title House of the Dead: Overkill may be in the works.  The sources are close to Sega, and believe the game is set to arrive in the early or middle of 2011.

Currently codenamed House of the Dead: Overkill 2, not much else is known about the game. Sega’s playing coy, giving their typical “no comment” response when asked for confirmation.

Either way, I could go for another round of Overkill myself.  The first title was absolutely bizarre, especially the ending — which I truly would love to share with you all. Generally speaking, it involved incest.

If you’re like me, you can’t even begin to comprehend why some truly terrific franchises get neglected by publishers. In EA’s case, I’m strictly talking about their winter sports extravaganza, SSX. The last SSX game was the 2007 motion-based SSX Blur for Wii, easily the greatest skiing/ snowboarding title on the console before the creation of the Balance Board.

Now, rumor has it EA is readying new SSX game, thanks to the discovery of two new domain names: “SSX First Descent” and “SSX Deadly Descent.” Obviously there’s a good chance these domains serve a purpose, possibly PlayStation Move and Kinect infused. Or, maybe the new domain names serve as EA’s leap into the perfume business, with “First Descent” for her and “Deadly Descent” for him.

Eh,… let’s hope it’s a new game.

For a few months now, we’ve heard that a PSP Phone was in the works, thanks to the folks at Engadget. Thanks to swift detective work, picture proof of the gaming mobile device has surfaced.

The phone is a Sony Ericsson branded device, which appears to be running Android 2.1 Eclair (based on the unlock and volume buttons), although is said to be running Android 3.0 Gingerbread when released. On top you have a traditional traditional Android setup, with four standard menu buttons resting below a large touch screen. Down below, a slide out panel reveals the gaming setup.

Engadget also claims to know a bit about what’s inside: 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 mobile processer, 1 GB ROM, 512 MB RAM.

Of course the greatest part of the new phone is that it runs Android, which presumably means you’ll have no problem adding emulators of your favorite retro games, with an incredible control setup.

Update: Nintendo responded, claiming rumors of an upcoming event are not true.

Original Post: After the stress of staying up until 1am, anxiously awaiting details of Nintendo’s 3DS handheld earlier this week, I don’t think I could deal with another big event. If the latest rumor is true, I may not have a choice.

Word on the street is the Big N is preparing another event, this time focusing on an announcement for their Wii console. Some theorize the Wii Vitality Sensor could be the topic of conversation. Considering we haven’t heard a word about it in over a year, I think that’s a good guess. The “event’ is planned for October 11th.

Until an official confirmation, let’s classify this as a rumor.

Post E3 2010, many game outlets including The Tanooki, predicted that Nintendo would release the 3DS in the 2010 holiday season, with an announcement in September. September is now almost over, the 3DS price and release date announcement looming on Wednesday, and another unofficial confirmation has placed the Japanese 3DS debut on November 11, falling right in line with industry predictions. German tabloid Bild, noted for being widely read in Europe but at times lacking in journalistic credibility, is on board with the popular guess, saying the device will come to Europe in the spring for $270. Going one step further, they also assert that the launch titles will be Mario Kart 3DS, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle.

Tabloid or no, the speculation will most likely end on September 29. Until then, what do you make of the price and launch titles?

Typo, or a hint of things to come? A reader at GoNintendo spotted this at EGMi. As you can see, it lists Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as coming to the PS3, XBOX 360…and the Wii! Surely, this has to be a typo. But wouldn’t it be lovely if it was merely a slip-up revealing information to come? Let’s hope Capcom clarifies if this story picks up traction!

A leak from Japanese media retailer Geo indicates we may be in store for the PSP-4000 soon. Above you see a financial briefing, with the words “PSP-4000″ marked clearly on the bottom row, with the words “sometime this year” where the release date should be. The PSP-4000, which has been subject to rumors before, is rumored to be digital download-only, with a touch screen and motion controls. However, it’s worth noting that while the above financial briefing seems pretty legit, they may have issue with their dates. Pokemon Black and White are listed for October when it’s already known that both games debut September 18. The timing is also mystifying, as you’d think that Sony would have unveiled the PSP-4000 to steal some of the 3DS thunder at this year’s E3 2010, which was only two weeks ago.

The post E3 2010 speculation on the Nintendo 3DS release date has been, in a word, chaos. Recently, president of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime made an appearance on the Late Show with Jimmy Fallon, stating the 3DS would not be coming til next year. Now, insiders from Japan indicate that the Fils-Aime misspoke. And apparently, they take issue with the “next year” assessment.

While sources to Kotaku insist that the Nintendo 3DS will be released by the end of this fiscal quarter (March 2011), essentially confirming earlier statements from Fils-Aime, they also say that the “next year” comment is out of step, raising suspicion that they may be aiming for a holiday 2010 window for release in Japan. However, the 3DS is supposed to have a worldwide launch, causing even more confusion.

While everything is still in the rumor stages, the stage is set for Nintendo to make an epic announcement. Could we be in for a 3D Christmas?

Today I had the privilege of getting my grubby mitts on all sorts of 3DS gameplay and video demos, everything from the Star Fox 64 remake to taking a 3D picture with the system. When all was said and done, this added up to contact with probably a dozen different units. Across the board, there were two things that each station had in common. First of all, they were all amazing. Second of all, each 3DS was mysteriously missing its stylus. Curious much? I think so, and it doesn’t exactly stop there.

Most of the demos didn’t require a stylus. For the few that did, I watched each presenter pull one out from under the counter and hand it to me. Now sure, I understand that they may have been removed to keep people from walking away with a free souvenir, but that doesn’t explain the additional fact that I was always given a third-party stylus. You would think that the removed pieces would be on hand, and surely free to use… unless of course they were all in the same place, either partying like only styli know how or hidden intentionally from the masses of E3 2010. I’m leaning toward the latter.

This gives a hair more credibility to the report that popped up earlier outlining a Nintendo patent for a rumble-enabled stylus. At the time, I thought it was just the Big N covering all their bases, but now it seems to be a greater possibility. Granted, the absence of such a crucial part of any DS handheld could be due to other unknown reasons, maybe even cooler than rumble (if that’s even possible). My guess? Star Fox 64 3D will be ushering in an era of rumble styli just as the original game brought feedback to the Nintendo 64. That’s just too good to pass up, right?

With mere days left to go before Nintendo’s E3 press conference, rumors are surfacing about the launch title for their latest generation hand held. According to Destructoid sources, Nintendo has been quietly showing a demo version of Animal Crossing on the 3DS to various developers and publishers. With the success of the franchise thus far, Animal Crossing seems like a fair bet. As Destructoid points out, Animal Crossing: Wild World for DS has sold almost ten million units alone.
