Sale starts today for select Rock Band DLC tracks on PS3

Good news for budget friendly music players. Harmonix and MTV Games are discounting several DLC songs in their Rock Band catalog in anticipation of late October’s Rock Band 3. Starting today, the sale is exclusive to the PS3, offering several songs and song packs for 50% off.

The discount will last through October 4th, a few weeks before Rock Band 3 officially hits store shelves on October 26th. You’ll see some great deals, including acts like the Stone Temple Pilots, The Runaway, R.E.M., and the Foo Fighters. Check out the complete list of on sale songs below:

This video sets an interesting theory in motion. Imagine, if the Rock Band and Guitar Hero titles of the future don’t require a TV or even gaming console. Instead, those repetitive colored lines of notes we all know by heart will stream down from the heavens right above our real instruments, by using holographic images.

Check out the video above and see for yourself. While it may not be reality just yet, it’s always fun to ponder what the future will look like. You know, aside from hoverboards and self-lacing Nikes.

Rock Band 3 proved winner of E3′s music offerings

It wasn’t until last week that the future of the music rhythm game genre was clearly defined to me.

After attending MTV Games and Harmonix’s special E3 Rock Band 3 presentation, everything became clear as I started to see what both Neversoft of Guitar Hero and Harmonix of Rock Band set out to accomplish with their upcoming software releases.

It’s very apparent that each Rock Band title (aside from maybe the Green Day and LEGO editions) strives to 1-up their predecessors, offering either new peripheral functionality, a new marketplace for songs, or a new way to play the game. It’s also very clear that each Guitar Hero release is just one of multiple annual GH titles that does little aside from changing the aesthetics and setlist, while trying to convince the consumer that they’ve revamped the franchise again and again. And that’s coming from the guy that has 5 versions of the game. With both Rock Band 3 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock set to release later this year, it appears Harmonix has swayed me over.

While GH: Warriors of Rock plans to add new songs while focusing on a harsher rock edge, Rock Band 3 plans to focus on new features. Seeing just how much Rock Band 3 has brought to the table was absolutely astonishing. The new Pro mode is exquisite, and will likely revolutionize the way our country’s youth learns how to play music. It’s hardly a far-fetched proclamation, considering the epic decline in funding for arts and music programs throughout our nation’s schools. Harmonix actually figured out a way to teach gamers how to play real musical instruments, something that seemed so easy to do on the surface, but took years of development time to achieve.

They are also introducing a line of new real guitar peripherals that not only feature authentic strings and other components to be used in the game, these instruments can also be used as a real guitar outside of the game. This basically means you can use it in the game, outside of the game, or combine the two by hooking up an amp to your guitar and jamming out to Rock Band 3 while playing a concert for your entire neighborhood. Or you can rock the traditional colored frets if you so choose.

The addition of the new keyboard makes this the most well rounded music title to date. Harmonix put in the work and dedication to make Rock Band 3 the deepest, richest music title around, which inadvertently makes some previous full length Guitar Hero sequels look like products that only should have substantiated a DLC release. As of now, GH: Warriors of Rock seems to fit in that camp too. But that trend has been going on for a few years now. You can tell that The Beatles: Rock Band was treated with much more respect and time than any Guitar Hero band title. Despite being one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Guitar Hero: Van Halen was recycled garbage.

After the RB 3 demo was over, I felt the game was nothing short of a masterpiece. I applaud the dedication and commitment that went into making the game feel like a vast improvement over previous titles. If anything, I think the decision to name the game “Rock Band 3” only gives the illusion that it’s just the third title in a series, instead of alluding to how ultimate and deep this title is.

At the end of the day, I highly recommend Rock Band 3 to any music fan that wants to learn, improve, or just jam to a large selection of tunes across all decades. I’ve just described a few of the additions that RB 3 has planned, but I can assure you, the list of intuitive user-friendly features are never ending. I’m fairly confident that RB3 will go down as one of the definitive music games of our generation. I can’t really say the same about the cash cow that has become Guitar Hero.

Keyboard compatibility arriving with Rock Band 3?

It looks like the natural evolution of music rhythm game peripherals will finally include a keyboard. A screengrab taken by Kotaku during a demo of Rock Band: Green Day shows a teaser image for Rock Band 3. Of note are the different musical instruments included in 5 different icons.

Guitar, drums, bass, and microphones were always bundled with the software, but the fifth icon is definitely showing a keyboard. Likely using a MIDI keyboard, fans will be able to play along with the game’s set list, presumably as long as the song of choice features a keyboard.

On a side note, I can play a mean “It’s A Small World” on a regular keyboard. Be prepared Rock Band universe.

LOST lives post finale on Rock Band Network

The pain that came from realizing that last night’s LOST episode would be the last was shared by the realization that the world of LOST-centricities would soon fade. It appears however that LOST is set to continue on, at least musically.

It’s been announced that two bands heavily featured on the series are set to release on the Rock Band Network. Driveshaft’s “You All Everybody,” as well as Geronimo Jackson’s “Dharma Lady” will likely launch in the next few days.

In case you aren’t familiar, Driveshaft was the band of castaway Charlie Pace, while several references to the band Geronimo Jackson were laced throughout the series.

Thankfully between the Rock Band Network, and those incredible Target commercials (shown after the break), the void won’t be as large.

Green Day: Rock Band will not have DLC

Green Day fans, sorry to disappoint. Looks like this Rock Band game will appeal more to pop culture enthusiasts than die hard fans. Not only will the games’ album selection be limited to Dookie and American Idiot, there won’t be any DLC featuring the Green Day back catalog, either. The only content you’ll be able to purchase and download will be the tracks from 21st Century Breakdown, which are already available for download in the Rock Band online store. Explains project lead Chris Foster:

“In this game we’re taking a different approach to performances: We’re building these crafted, linear sequences. One of the reasons we could do open-ended DLC for The Beatles is that it’s all tiny clips, and we could just reconfigure them for different songs as needed — and dreamscape backgrounds similarly had that. With this, we’re really creating sculpted experiences for every single song; there’s an animation that plays all the way through, pretty much. That’s something that’s not really practical to do open-ended. So we decided we were going to make DLC just about finishing 21st Century Breakdown, using the DLC that was already out. That created a great three-album game, and also let us give each of those [six DLC tracks] unique assets, more than we could easily pack into a DLC pack. Those songs have their own video-wall assets, their own [motion capture].”

All-Star singles headed to Rock Band Music Store this week

Six new singles will be available for download this week in the Rock Band Music Store for all three major consoles. “Empty Walls” and “Sky is Over,” both from Serj Tankian’s Elect the Dead Symphoy live album will be available, alongside Smash Mouth’s pop hit, “All Star.” Additionally, both “Sky is Over” and “All Star” will also be available for LEGO Rock Band. Finally, rounding out the six singles are “Blood on My Hands,” “Born to Quit,” and “The Taste of Ink,” the latter being from The Used’s self-titled debut album, and the former two from their newer Artwork album.

You can read the full press release after the break if you want, otherwise you can plan on dropping $2 a pop for each of these songs some time this week!

Serj Tankian, Smash Mouth & The Used In The Rock Band Music Store Next Week

Cambridge, Mass. – April 9, 2010 – Harmonix and MTV Games today announced that six singles from artists Serj Tankian, Smash Mouth and The Used will be added next week to the Rock Band Music Store of downloadable content for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Wii™.

With more than 400 artists, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, AC/DC and Green Day, who are exclusive to Rock Band, as well as 1,100 songs available through the Rock Band platform and 65 million songs sold through its download store alone, Rock Band is the undisputed sales and content leader in the interactive music space, providing the deepest and best selection of artists, songs and albums.

Two tracks from Serj Tankian’s first live album, Elect the Dead Symphony, will be available in the Rock Band Music Store next week. “Empty Walls” and “Sky is Over” are both featured on Elect the Dead Symphony, which was released March 9 and features the Aucklund Philharmonia Orchestra from New Zealand. The album reached No. 2 on the U.S. Classical Albums chart.

Also available next week is the ubiquitous pop classic, “All Star” from Smash Mouth, as well as three singles from American hard rockers The Used, who are touring the United States this month. “Blood on My Hands” and “Born to Quit” from the band’s 2009 album Artwork, as well as “The Taste of Ink” from the band’s self-titled 2002 debut album, will be available for download in the Rock Band Music Store next week.

Rock Band gets Jimi Hendrix’s “Axis” with more to come

I’m a very well-rounded musician nowadays, but it all started when I received my first acoustic guitar at the age of five. I grew up listening to legends like The Beatles, Cream, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, etc. so you can imagine my excitement when I read that the music of Jimi Hendrix was headed to Rock Band. On March 30th for Xbox 360 and Wii owners and April 1st for PlayStation 3 owners, Hendrix’s Axis: Bold As Love will become available for purchase (sans “EXP”) both as an album and as individual tracks.

Other albums such as Are You Experienced? and Electric Ladyland are also on the release slate. So why Axis, his second studio album, first? MTV Games’ Paul DeGooyer explains:

“A lot of people are familiar with the singles [on Axis], but the concept of the album has kind of evaporated from the minds of certain demography over the past decade or so, and so people are cherry-picking songs. Axis may benefit from getting this highlighting and taken together. And it’s tremendously fun to play as well.”

Makes sense. “Castles Made of Sand” was the second song I ever learned after getting my electric guitar, after Clapton’s “Crossroads.”

Carrie Underwood and Ace Frehley head to Rock Band Store

A new pack of tracks has been announced for release on the Rock Band Music Store. The pack consist of four tracks from American punk group X. The band is making their Rock Band debut with songs “The Hungry Wolf,” “Blue Spark,” “Los Angeles,” and “I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts.” Other additions to this week’s releases are three tracks from British garage band Little Fish, plus new singles from American Idol pop sensation Carrie Underwood, Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley and Colorado pop band OneRepublic.

The tracks will be available for download on March 23rd for Wii and Xbox 360, and on March 25th for PlayStation 3.

Green Day: Rock Band shipping this June

Get ready to rock this summer, as Harmonix and MTV Games will release Green Day: Rock Band. The standalone title is set for a June 8th release for the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 consoles. The game will feature 47 tracks from the band’s extensive catalog, and will naturally feature their likeness within the game.

Play as band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool across different venues. The experience will bring fans on a journey through the history of Green Day. Unlockables are included in the game, including more than 100 collectible images, and more than 40 minutes of rare and unreleased interviews, outtakes and performances.

Of the 47 tracks, all of them are fully exportable to Rock Band, Rock Band 2, and the recently announced Rock Band 3. Some of the tracks confirmed for release are “Brain Stew,” “Jaded,” “Hitchin’ a Ride,” “American Idiot,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.”

HIM, Marilyn Manson and The Police heading to Rock Band

Music from Marilyn Manson, The Police, KSM and One Night Only is heading to the Rock Band Music Store, for the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Bam Margera’s personal favorite Finnish rock group HIM is also coming, making their Rock Band Music Store debut as well. I’m not sure if you could draw a theme together for this interesting lineup of artists, so let’s just call it “magical!”

Blackstreet singer accused of using Rock Band guitar in attack

A singer from the ’90s R&B group Blackstreet has been accused of using the guitar peripheral from Rock Band in an attack against his daughters. Taja Riley, 18, has accused her father Teddy Riley, 43, of “stomping, punching and bashing” her and her older sister in an attack that took place just two days before Christmas. Teddy Riley then allegedly took the Rock Band guitar and threatened to kill them with it.

Taja has been issued a restraining order against her father, for injuries that includes bashes to her temple, face and knee. No details as to what made him so upset to attack his daughters.

I’d imagine it is possible the lack of Blackstreet DLC in Rock Band could make a man angry.
