HIM, Marilyn Manson and The Police heading to Rock Band

Music from Marilyn Manson, The Police, KSM and One Night Only is heading to the Rock Band Music Store, for the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Bam Margera’s personal favorite Finnish rock group HIM is also coming, making their Rock Band Music Store debut as well. I’m not sure if you could draw a theme together for this interesting lineup of artists, so let’s just call it “magical!”

Here is a full breakdown of the cost and schedule for your downloading itinerary.

E3 2009: The Beatles: Rock Band DLC incompatible with other Rock Band titles

Bad news for Rock Band owners hoping to download the Beatles’ Abbey Road album later this year, it turns out that a copy of The Beatles: Rock Band will be required. Harmonix Creative Director Josh Randall confirmed that tracks for The Beatles: Rock Band have a separate license than other games in the Rock Band franchise. As a result, any Beatles music available for download can only be played using The Beatles: Rock Band. The game is set to release on September 9th this year.

Yet another Rock Band Track Pack coming

Rock Band owners (and the two or three people who own Rock Band instruments but not the actual games for whatever weird reason) will soon be able to buy a brand new Rock Band Track Pack. Rock Band Track Pack Classic Rock will include 20 songs and will go for $30. PS3 and 360 owners will be able to export the songs to their console hard drives and play them from within Rock Band and Rock Band 2, but sadly, Wii owners will not.

Rock Band 2 DLC details revealed

Well, Rock Band 2 DLC is coming eventually. It will most likely work in a similar way to the Guitar Hero: World Tour system. Harmonix is taking it a step further, though, and plans to release a Rock Band 2-branded SD card. The card will have 2 gigs of space and will cost $12.99.

So just how much is 2 gigs in Rock Band terms? It’s estimated that the average Rock Band song will be around 24MB in size, so it should hold just over 80 songs if you use it exclusively for that. It appears to be a standard SD card with a pretty Rock Band 2 sticker on it, so you can use it for things like WiiWare backups as well. That also means you can just use any old SD card you happen to have lying around for storing your tunes. Thus is the magic of flash memory.

Rock Band 2 DLC still on the way for Wii owners

If you’ve picked up Rock Band 2 for the Wii, you might be playing it with an empty feeling. “Something’s missing…”

Yeah, something’s missing. There’s no content for you to download, regardless of the fact that you probably have yet to play through the 84 on-disc offerings. Harmonix wants you to keep calm and not panic – DLC is on the way.

The downloadable content is in the final testing stages and Harmonix is working as fast as possible to deliver the 20 free bonus songs for Rock Band 2, plus an additional 30 songs from the Rock Band DLC Catalog to fans as early in 2009 as possible.

I guess it’s a little harder to stick a file on an SD card than we all thought. Or perhaps it’s the simple task of streaming music information from the cards to the game that’s the problem. Either way, the post on their web forums assure us all that as soon as they set a definite date for DLC availability, we’ll know about it.

Roy Orbison track pack coming to Rock Band 2

CMT just broke some interesting Rock Band 2 news. CMT. I know, right?

According to their website, the MTV-owned channel will be airing a “Top 20 Countdown of the Year” special on the 26th, complete with videos from Sugarland, Kenny Chesney, interviews with Taylor Swift, Kid Rock, and more. Of course, the sentence of significance for us is as follows:

Plus, get details on how you can rock out with The Soul of Rock and Roll with the upcoming release of the Roy Orbison Pack for Rock Band 2 consoles.

News to us, though it’s probably a safe bet to expect an official announcement regarding The Big O soon.

Rock Band 2 officially dated, finally

Well that only took forever. According to an announcement on the official Rock Band forums, the Wii version of Rock Band 2 will ship on December 18th. So what are the odds of getting a copy for Christmas? Still pretty slim. The game is expected to actually hit store shelves 5-7 days after the shipping date. That means the earliest you can expect to see it is December 23rd, two days before Christmas. Even then, it will likely be snapped up pretty quick.

The game alone will be $49.99, the drums will be $89.99, and the guitar will be $69.99. Of course, the game will also come bundled with the instruments for $189.99. Sound expensive? Well, there’s always an alternate method.

Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 learn to play nice

It has been confirmed that the Wii Guitar Hero: World Tour instruments are compatible with the Wii version of Rock Band 2. Heck, it’s even compatible with the Guitar Hero III controller. This is great news for fans of music games. Buying two complete sets of instruments is too expensive to be practical. Not to mention the clutter….

However, Rock Band 1 is incompatible with Guitar Hero instruments, so make sure you take that into account when planning your music game purchases. It also doesn’t look like Guitar Hero: World Tour will be playable with Rock Band 2‘s instruments. So many different things to consider.

Rock Band 2 may be out by Christmas, definitely by New Years

The release window for Rock Band 2 has gotten narrower. Don’t get your hopes too high about finding a giant box of toy instruments under your tree this year, however. (Unless it’s a box of Guitar Hero: World Tour instruments.) Harmonix has confirmed with Destructoid that the game is set to release in “Late December.”

How late? That’s still a mystery. Some time between the 20th and 31st, I would guess. Either way, the demand for this game will most definitely be greater than the supply. Expect lots of sad faces this Christmas morning.

Wii Rock Band 2 to play catch up

Rock Band for Wii was ridiculously gimped. Everyone knows that. It was a cash in. Harmonix has learned from its mistakes, though, and seems to be fixing things retroactively.

We already knew the Wii version of Rock Band 2 would feature DLC. What we did not know was that the list of available DLC would be retroactive. Rock Band 2 owners will have access to the full catalog of Rock Band 1 DLC at launch. Not only that, but the ability to use the Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band 2 has also been confirmed. The gap between the two versions of Rock Band 2 just keeps getting smaller.

Rock Band 2 to include DLC in all three current-gen versions

Good news for Rock Band-loving Wii owners. According to USA Today, the Wii version of the game will include the same online functionality as it’s PS360 siblings.

“While unannounced, MTV Games has confirmed that the upcoming Nintendo Wii version of ‘Rock Band 2′ will offer the same online functionality — i.e. song downloads and Internet multiplayer modes — as the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 versions.”

Yes, that includes song downloads. Looks like this will put an end to that expansion disc nonsense.

There are still a few questions left to answer, though. Will Rock Band 2 require a certain amount of storage space to play songs stored on an SD card, like Guitar Hero: World Tour? Will the Wii version allow you to import Rock Band 1 songs like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions? Only time will tell. Or press releases.

Rock Band 2 will be less like the original Rock Band

Remember how Rock Band not only came late to the party for Wii owners, but also skipped online play, downloadable content, and customization? It looks like that isn’t going to be the case with the second installment of the series. Good news for prospective buyers indeed. Harmonix representatives have said the game should be:

A much more competitive product.

Sure it isn’t an official confirmation but at least Harmonix has admitted that the original wasn’t quite up to snuff. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery. If Rock Band 2 doesn’t change the Wii formula, I’m not afraid to stage an intervention. It’s what friends should do, right?

Rock Band 2 – Hands On

We had the chance to sit down with the folks at Harmonix for a hands on presentation and demo of the upcoming Rock Band 2. As the spokesperson for Harmonix stated, their goal for the Rock Band franchise was to first revolutionize the genre with the first title, and then to perfect their work with its sequel. The new features included in the game that we have seen to day clearly show that Harmonix is trying to give its fans what they want with this game.

One thing that stood out was the instruments themselves. Everything from the guitars to the drums have been re-imagined to make the game that much more immersive to the player. The guitar peripheral will be available in two different designs, and both the fret buttons and strum bar have been given a “softer” feel, making it seem like you are playing an actual instrument rather than a plastic controller.

The drum set will have a few symbol expansions, and can also be made into a functional electronic drum set with the purchase of a drum brain attachment from Ion, a company that manufactures actual professional percussion instruments. This equipment will cost around $275, however, considering that other drum sets cost upwards of $500 this may prove to be a cost-efficient alternative for aspiring musicians. The game itself will also include a tutorial on how to actually play the drums outside of the traditional Rock Band gameplay.

In addition, XBox 360 and PS3 owners will be able to not only play downloaded Rock Band tracks in the sequel, but also store all of the songs on the actual disc on their hard drive and play them within Rock Band 2. Unfortunately, due to lack of storage space, it looks like Wii owners will have to just swap discs if they wish to go back and play any previous songs.

Harmonix also discussed some additions and enhancements to existing game modes from Rock Band that will make the overall experience even more enjoyable. In free play mode, players will now be able to create set lists of songs which will then play in order instead of having to manually select what they would like to play next in-between songs. Battle of the Bands, a new feature that offers daily challenges will also be available on the 360 and PS3 via XBox Live and the PSN. No word yet on whether or not this feature will be available on the Wii version.

Finally, Harmonix discussed the impressive library of songs that will be available to 360 and PS3 users. For both of these consoles, Rock Band 2 will feature a total of over 500 songs that will be available by this holiday season. This includes songs on both game discs and downloadable content. Once again, Wii owners will be out of luck in this regard, but it there is always the potential that this content will be released on expansion pack discs.

Overall the game is shaping up to be a fantastic title, and a very worthy successor to the first game.

Rock Band 2 track list revealed
