From VBlank Entertainment comes a new type of 8-bit adventure that will make you rethink your happy-go-lucky childhood NES gaming experiences. Retro City Rampage is like taking Grand Theft Auto and playing it off a Famicom. Set in an 8-bit open world, the player will steal, carjack and shoot your way towards victory. There are over 30 vehicles to steal, including Doc Brown’s stainless steel beauty, a vintage 1985 DeLorean.

Originally developed in 2002 under the name Retro Theftendo, RCR is set to parody all things gaming. Look for the game on the WiiWare service, set for a fall release.

Atlus announced this morning that they have licensed the bizarre action-adventure title, 3D Dot Game Heroes for release in North America. I had a suspicion that this was one of those titles that was just a little too weird to ever escape Japan, this is one of those times when I’m happy to be proven wrong. For those who are unaware, 3D Dot Game Heroes is sort of a 3D adaptation of a particularly Zelda-like game. But instead of over-the-top polygon counts and smooth, lush curves, all the 3D elements are built of giant, blocky pixels. The game is meant to appeal to die-hard 8/16-bit gaming fans, paying homage to the classics the whole way through, which makes me wonder why it was developed for PS3 rather than a platform which still sees new titles from our favorite franchises of yore. Regardless, the game looks like a little slice of retro-homage heaven, and should drop in the states on May 11.

With the amount attention and excitement that Capcom’s Mega Man 9 has garnered since it’s reveal, it would make sense that other companies would tap the potential of their classics.

That may be exactly what Konami is planning, according to the latest issue of EGM. No word on a particular franchise, but I’m having a really good time with Contra 4. Something along those lines would be very welcome.
