It’s almost Resident Evil’s 15th anniversary, and Capcom has decided they’re bringing us a dose of high def Redfield to celebrate.  Resident Evil Code: Veronica X and Resident Evil 4 are going to be re-released, bringing back Chris, Claire, and Kennedy in HD! As you can see from the comparison shot below, the revamp will add beautiful new textures (while sadly neglecting to do anything with Leon’s 90s Goo Goo Doll hair):

Due out on Xbox 360 and PS3, both are expected as downloadable titles this upcoming fall. Check out the trailer commemorating this grand moment, above.

Capcom has two portable Resident Evil titles in development, and we’ve got a deeper look at both of them, in the form of screenshots and art.

Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D Edition is comprised of remastered stages from both Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, in stunning 3D on Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS handheld. The game allows for both singleplayer and co-op modes, where as mercenaries, players must kill as many enemies within a set time period as possible. Character selection includes Chris Redfield, newcomer Claire Redfield, Hunk and Krauser. Here’s a look at Mercenaries below.

Also coming for the Nintendo 3DS is Resident Evil: Revelations. Once again partnering Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, the game focuses on survival in and around a deserted cruise ship. The artwork will have you shaking in your three-dimensional boots. Revelations gallery below the break.

We try to make every one a satisfactory movie and if the movie does well enough and we feel there’s a demand and Paul and I and my colleagues are creatively excited enough, we would do another one. I think that we try to view every one as it could be the last one. We’re not presumptuous enough to think it will just keep going. But, one of the things that’s pretty exciting is now we are working very closely with Capcom, so we have a very strong relationship and my dream is that I actually will make a version of this film that properly integrates a game and a movie, which has never been done to my knowledge. But I think we’ve showed them, we’ve brought things to their franchise, and obviously we’ve taken from their franchise and I think there’s a good union, a creative union potentially there which I haven’t fully explored. So that would be my goal in the future.

So not necessarily the last, and they’d like to connect the games and movies more. Interesting. I’ve grown to enjoy the Resident Evil live action films over time… perhaps they just work better as a series. The latest installment, Resident Evil: Afterlife starring Milla Jovovich was revealed a couple days ago at Wondercon, and you can check that out above. Aside from being somewhat lacking in terms of zombies, the movie looks like it’s shaping up nicely. You can definitely tell from all the action, explosions, and objects being thrown/flown that it’s going to be playing the 3D card pretty often.

The movie will be out by this fall. Anyone else looking forward to it? Between Prince of Persia and this, I’d say we have a couple of decent game movie adaptations on the way.

Take a peep at this last trailer before Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicle’s November 17th release. It is, in a word, thrilling. While before I was merely interested in Darkside Chronicles…now,  I feel an impending addiction coming on.

Capcom sure knows how to go all out for promoting a game.  The company actually found zombies and convinced them to invade the streets of London, England. I’m sure the Queen was thrilled!

Actually, fans of the Resident Evil game series helped to mark the end of the London Games Festival by dressing up in zombie gear. Over 50 zombies roamed the streets for 2 hours, to help celebrate the November 27th release of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles on Wii.

Anyone who’s been a Nintendo fan for more than five minutes can readily attest to this single profound truth: “Japan gets all the best stuff.” The upcoming Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles release is no exception.

This special edition version of Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, to be released only in Japan on January 14, contains the game, a soundtrack CD, a promo DVD with game videos, and a reversible sleeve, all for about $90 USD.

And yes, I know its torture to have these unattainable special editions dangled right in front of your face, but its always nice to see what Japan is doing with their time, right? Here’s hoping a special edition is in works for the North America region, too.

Pixel artist Arcade Art never ceases to amaze. Not content to make existing 8 bit game characters out of Perler beads, she’s set out to create original pieces of work such as the spriting community has never seen!

Aside from the new Resident Evil Chronicles game that was announced recently, Capcom is bringing two other Resident Evil Wii games to North America. The GameCube versions of Resident Evil and its prequel, Resident Evil Zero, will be ported to the Wii and released in North America. The Wii ports were announced some time ago, but only for Japan, with Capcom USA going so far as to outright deny North American versions of the games. Both ports will feature new control schemes and be priced at $29.99, just like the Play On Wii games, and will be released under a new “Resident Evil Classics” label.

Resident Evil 5 is coming soon, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. When questioned for what was probably the millionth time about a possible Wii version, Capcom Associate Product Marketing Manager Matt Dahlgren gave this reply:

It was made for the Xbox 360 and PS3. That being said, Nintendo Wii fans will be very happy very soon.

Oh, really? Just how happy? Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles 2 happy? Resident Evil 5: Racism Till You Drop happy? How about Resident Evil 6 happy? Those are some pretty widely varying degrees of happiness. You may remember recent rumblings about the desire of Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata to make a Wii Resident Evil. Well, whatever Dahlgren was referring to, we’ll probably know soon.

Resident Evil 4 was best on Wii. You know it’s true. The controls, of course, were what made the experience. Resident Evil 5, on the other hand, has seen quite a bit of griping because of its controls. So what’s the next logical step? Make a new Resident Evil game for the Wii. Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata gets it:

Personally I would like to create something on Wii in the Resident Evil family. At the moment we don’t know and have just been working on RE5, so watch this space.

Don’t bother to watch that space. We here at The Tanooki will watch it for you and let you know if anything changes.

Of course, this is far from an announcement that Resident Evil 6 will be a Wii game. It’s not known for sure whether this hypothetical Wii Resident Evil will ever come to fruition, and if it does, it’s not clear at this point whether it will be the next installment in the main series or another spinoff. Still, it’s hard not to get excited at the prospect of more of what Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition brought to the table.

Widescreen TV owners will have to settle for pillarboxing, as the single-disc game only supports the original 4:3 screen ratio. The game does add the ability to play with just the horizontal Wii remote, in addition to the GameCube, Nunchuk, and Classic control schemes used for Resident Evil 0 on the Wii. Finally, the standard Wii Remote + Nunchuk scheme allows you to use the remote pointer and B-button for shooting, and you can simply shake to Wii Remote to go to and from shooting mode.

BUT, as the guys at NeoGAF point out, look at those additions to the boxart. Man, oh man. They took the Japanese GameCube cover, pasted Chris and giganto-Jill on top of it, and called it a day. Amazing.

Much like the Resident Evil Zero remake for Wii, the Wii-controlled version of the original mansion crawling horror is, most likely, to stay on foreign soil. Christian Svensson commented on the situation adding:

At the moment, like Zero, this is Japan only. That could change but that’s the current situation…In Japan, Zero sold well indicating that many people have never played the title and there is demand for it. This project is a reaction to the sale of Zero.

Not too big of a deal, as there are already a few versions out on the market already, but it’s never good to see games skip your region. I guess diehard fans that must have the game could always import? Yeah… not really worth it…
