An update to the official Fire Emblem website today held a nice surprise. Nintendo will be releasing a DS remake of the 1994 SNES series Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu (or Mystery of the Emblem: Hero of Light and Shadow). While there’s no mention of the game coming to the US, the port of the original Fire Emblem came to the States last February, fueling beliefs that we’ll see this new remake ultimately reach our Western shores. The game debuts in Japan this year. Check out the Japanese trailer above.

It’s become a broken record. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama would be eager to undertake the remaking of a franchise classic. All the same, people at Square Enix saying they want to remake Final Fantasy VII is like me and the rest of the world saying we want the Cubs to win the World Series. At some point, they’ll need to stop saying they’d like it to happen and just make it happen.

“If we had the manpower and the time to work on a project. If we were to remake Final Fantasy VII with the quality of Final Fantasy XIII it would become a tremendous project. If we can get the number of people we need by all means that would be the one I would really want to remake.”

Granted, if we actually do get a FFVII remake, I’m going to demand remakes for FFVIII and FFIX. Then maybe an HD version of FFIV, FFX, and FFIV. Of course by then, we’ll all be harping on Square Enix for making nothing but remakes. I guess there’s really no pleasing Final Fantasy fans.

Good news for Earthworm Jim fans: Gameloft is remaking the original game for an upcoming release as a DSiWare title. According to Nintendo Power, there will be a normal mode that will, for the most part, stay true to the original as a nod to the game’s fans. In hopes that newbies will be able to finish the game, an easy mode will be included that reduces damage taken, slows down enemies, and provides hints on the bottom screen.

In terms of enhancements, things really start to get groovy. We’ll be getting the typical redrawn sprites, improved sound quality, remixed music, brighter colors, all that good stuff. The most interesting part? The game actually plans on making use of the DSi camera. Apparently you’ll get extra bonus points for mimicking Jim’s facial expressions as you play through the game!

The original Splatterhouse is one of the most beloved and oft played titles on my Virtual Console, so these screencaps kind of come as a shock. Last time I saw ole Rick, he was a hulking mess of poorly shaded pixels. Now he’s all growed up and ready for PS3 and XBOX 360. How time flies.

The Splatterhouse remake, featuring a few story tweaks and all new graphics, is due out spring 2010. Until then, enjoy these new screenshots.

While that other The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake is coming along nicely, another, slightly more ambitious project has popped up. This remake, called The Legend of Zelda: Ballad of the Wind Fish, is in full 3D, in the style of the 3D Zelda games, as opposed to being a 2D game with 3D models. This new remake promises to make some pretty interesting changes. For example, Link will be able to swim at the beginning of the game, but will be unable to dive until he finds the flippers. Alternatively, he can use Bow Wow to weigh himself down to sink below the surface and explore as far as Bow Wow’s chain will allow him to. The Wii-style HUD leaves the impression that this is a Wii homebrew project.

The game is only in its Alpha stage now, as it has only been in production for a few weeks. Expect it to look much better as more progress is made.

Metroid fans love to make and remake Metroid games, apparently. One such remake project, called AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) seems to be coming along nicely. So nicely, in fact, that it has managed to produce a tech demo called Metroid: Confrontation. The demo is not part of the remake itself, exactly. It’s more of a seperate game to showcase what the final product will be like. It is, of course, free, so Metroid fans should be sure to check it out.

The latest issue of Famitsu reveals that Namco is hard at work on a Wiimake of the PS1 platformer Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. The remake features spiffy new cel shaded graphics while retaining the 2.5D platforming goodness that made the original game so appealing. The game will be controlled using the Wiimote held horizontally, but it’s unknown whether it will make use of the Wiimote’s motion sensing capabilities.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile is set for a December 4 release in Japan.

Much like the Resident Evil Zero remake for Wii, the Wii-controlled version of the original mansion crawling horror is, most likely, to stay on foreign soil. Christian Svensson commented on the situation adding:

At the moment, like Zero, this is Japan only. That could change but that’s the current situation…In Japan, Zero sold well indicating that many people have never played the title and there is demand for it. This project is a reaction to the sale of Zero.

Not too big of a deal, as there are already a few versions out on the market already, but it’s never good to see games skip your region. I guess diehard fans that must have the game could always import? Yeah… not really worth it…

Visit either the Japanese or North American Square Enix countdown page and you’ll see what I mean. Is it really happening? Chrono Trigger on the DS? Looks like my “not probable” line may have been a bit too harsh.

The important thing to note here, is that there are two sites and possibly more. Which confirms the possible release in North America soon after if not alongside the probable Japanese launch.

It seems like we’ve heard more rumors about the Chrono series than any other over the past decade, most of them completely fabricated. This particular one is kind of intriguing, supposedly coming from an upcoming issue of Jump, the image’s low quality “fuzz” is spread evenly over the entire image and is consistent, indicating that if there was some editing done, it was done on a pretty good quality image and then reduced afterwards.

Either way, with all the support the DS has been receiving from Squeenix these days, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy just for starters, it’s definitely in the realm of possibility.
