Sony has finally launched its Welcome Back Program as a thanks to PSN users for their loyalty and patience during the lengthy outage. As long as you signed up before the outage began on April 20th, you’re eligible to download two games for each the PS3 and PSP.

Through July 3, PS3 owners have a buffet made up of Dead Nation, inFAMOUS, LittleBigPlanet, Super Stardust HD, and Wipeout HD + Fury. PSP owners can pick their pair of games from LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers, Pursuit Force, and Killzone Liberation. In addition, non-PlayStation Plus subscribers will get 30 days free of the Plus service, while existing subscribers have already had 60 free days added to their subscriptions.

There are a few more freebies for you, so hit the link below or check your email. Sony also notes that as the new program launches, you may encounter erros trying to access it. The solution? Keep trying or come back later.

Sony has just announced that Playstation Network is finally back online. In a video announcement placed on their official blog, Executive Deputy President of Sony Kazuo Hirai confirmed the phased restoration of functionality to PSN across Playstation 3 and PSP, noting that users will have to change their password upon restoring their service. He added that the system’s security updates include “advanced security technology, increased levels of encryption, additional firewalls, and early warning detection systems for any unusual activity that could signal an attack on the network”.

He also said they were allowing customers who were concerned about their identity being stolen to enroll in identity theft programs at no cost, such as cyber monitoring or insurance, though details on that were not given. The “Welcome Back” package, providing free services to those affected by the outage, will also be announced formerly in the coming days.

For now, online multiplayer capabilities are restored as this phased restoration continues on a country by country basis. No specific times have been given for each region, but you can check out the progress on the Playstation Blog map if you’re feeling antsy.

As far as Japanese hardware sales go, Nintendo and Sony were virtually tied in 2010 when all is said and done. The Nintendo DS, which has for years maintained an undisputed lead in the Japanese market, was edged out by Sony’s PSP. Combined sales for the DS totaled 2,717,544 during the calendar year, while the PSP managed to move 2,729,718 units.

On the home console side of things, the Wii remained on top, but only just. Sony’s PS3 kept pace with Nintendo, selling 1,542,258 units compared to the Wii’s 1,592,563 units sold. Xbox 360 trailed with 231,258 Xbox 360s sold, while Sony’s PlayStation 2 rounded out hardware sales, selling 83,030 units.

In addition, ASCII has provided year totals for software, doing a month better than yesterday’s year-through-November stats from Media Create. You can view 2010′s 10 best selling software titles in Japan along with their YTD totals after the break.

The ESRB has rated a quartet of games for re-release on the PlayStation 3 and PSP platforms. Those classic PlayStation titles — Legend of Mana, Threads of Fate, Vagrant Story, and Xenogears — all have SCEA (Sony) listed as their publisher, which can only mean that the games are headed for the PlayStation Network under the PSOne Classics banner.

Originally announced earlier this month as being set for the “spring,” the Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection will be launched for PSP in Japan specifically on March 24th. Sporting a grittier, more realistic set of 2D graphics for both Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, the collection will be released as a retail UMD game for ¥5,980 ($73), while the PSN download will only cost you ¥4,980 ($61).

In addition, Square Enix is releasing an “Ultimate Monopoly Pack” on their e-Store, shown to the right above, which includes the game, Official Complete Guide, The After Years Original soundtrack, and Original Art Collection. The ultimate set will cost ¥9,445 ($115).

Once downloaded, users can use the app to scan the barcode on over 20,000 video games, past and present — dating back to the year 2000 — to instantly obtain assets. If you aren’t the futuristic scanning type,  you can always type a game title into the app’s search bar.

The Cedemo app is a great tool when you’re out and about, offering screenshots, game details, trailers and gameplay footage; all will help you avoid those on-the-fence or accidental game purchases. The app is also great once you’re home enjoying the game, bringing hints and game tips.

I gave Cedemo a test drive, and was pretty amazed at how well it works. Out of the random selection of games I picked it, it had assets for each and every one of them; somehow, their trailer Donkey Kong Country Returns was one I had never seen. I’d certainly give this a big thumbs up to anyone who needs a bit of visual reassurance prior to purchasing their games.

If you appreciate reality shows, video games, and Sony’s desire to create original content accessible through the PlayStation Store, then you need to keep an eye on The Tester. The second season of the popular PSN show is upon us, slated to debut this fall. This season of the show follows 12 contestants, willing to do anything to get a foot in the door of the gaming industry. By completing challenges in each episode, the contestants will have to prove themselves worthy of the show’s top prize, a position at Sony Computer Entertainment as a software tester, along with a cash prize.

The cast for season 2 has been announced via the PlayStation Blog, and it’s a pretty diverse group of gamers. Ages ranging from 21 to 34, you have such contestants as Matthew “Gaymer” Brown, a gay gamer from San Diego, Mohamed “Mo Chocolate” Obsieyeh, and tap dancer from Africa, and Raychelle “Boo” Keeling, a model from Missouri.

Today we have some new event and battle screen shots from the upcoming Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. This PSP prequel to Kingdom Hearts hosts a slew of new features, including a customizable deck, a new Command System, a new Command Board (which integrates a board-game like interface to world selection), and the Dimension Link, which allows players to temporarily be assisted by characters left behind in other worlds.

Expect to see Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep on North American shelves September 7, 2010. Screen shots are in our newly updated gallery below.

North America doesn’t have nearly enough homoerotic shmups, you know. Thank the great jubbah we’re finally, after 15 long, hard years, getting the chance to play Cho Aniki: Kyuukyoku Muteki Ginga Saikyou Otoko (or just Cho Aniki, as it will be known) thanks to the magic of the PSN store, according to the ESRB.

This PS1 Classic originally launched in 1995 and, unsurprisingly, never made it out of Japan. The Cho Aniki series is famous for its focus on half-naked muscle men and homoeroticism. There’s no shortage of torsos on screen at any given time. Sadly, this particular iteration is widely accepted as the worst in the series. Apparently the difficulty is horribly unbalanced and the digital photo sprites that were so popular back in the mid-90s are often as terrifying as they are kitschy. But hey, protein blobs and shiny muscle men. That’s worth something, right? If you want a more hilarious idea of what to look forward to, check out the ESRB content description.

This is a side-scrolling shooter in which players control characters that fire energy beams and bombs at an assortment of mechanical creatures. The game depicts photo-realistic muscle men in tight Speedo underwear who defeat several fantastical enemies: giant man-powered vehicles, floating disembodied heads and noses, animal-man hybrid creatures that explode in fiery bursts. Some sequences depict muscle-bound men forming human pyramids, cradling each other, and posing in provocative positions (e.g., heads submerged near characters’ crotches). One boss character fires lasers from a phallic-shaped rod that extends from his hip. Another giant boss character shoots out gas clouds from his buttocks.

This week’s bulky PSN update adds a multitude of wallpapers, demos and add-ons. Three PSP titles are now also available for download, with the release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Metal Slug XX and Disgaea Infinite.

For PS3, new downloadable titles include Death Track: Resurrection, Voodoo Dice, Joe Danger and Sam & Max Episode 1: The Penal Zone (uhh,.. Beavis? Did he say penal?).

It’s Tuesday, June 1st, and Sony has a fresh batch of updates for their PlayStation Network. The most appealing addition will please sports and retro gaming fanatics, as Tecmo Bowl Throwback launches for PS3, for $9.99. The game follows the format of the NES classic Tecmo Bowl, with updated graphics and music. Planet Mini-Golf, offering 16 diverse mini-golf courses, has also released today, for $9.99.

A few other notable changes to the PSN include price drops for quite a few titles; LittleBigPlanet PSP is now $19.99, instead of $39.99, Gran Turismo PSP is now $19.99 instead of $39.99, and SOCOM: Fire Team Bravo for PSP is now $9.99, instead of $15.99.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the iPhone and iPod Touch are emerging as a mainstream gaming platform, but just how successful has their entry been into a Nintendo-dominated market? According to Flurry Analytics, game revenues for Apple’s app store have managed to handily eclipse those of Sony’s PlayStation Portable and take away a chunk of Nintendo’s action as well.

Granted, the entire portable games market grew from the $2.25 billion market it was in the US in 2008 to approximately a $2.55 billion market in 2009, but that’s not nearly enough for everyone to benefit. By those figures, the DS market grew, the iPhone market grew, but the PSP market has some serious catching up to do.
