At the Nintendo roundtable session at E3 2011, it was confirmed the long delayed Pikmin title is still in the works, and will be pushed from the Wii to the Wii U. Miyamoto took the stage at the end of the meeting to discuss Pikmin‘s 10th anniversary and his desire to see the new game finally come to fruition, saying that while he wanted to finish it this year, he’d now like to see it on Wii U, “so we’ll make it on that”.

An HD platform sounds about right for a Pikmin title, don’t you think? Maybe it’s good the game has been delayed for so long.

Nintendo UK’s Head of Marketing, James Honeywell, has commented on the inevitable question of a Super Smash Bros. title for the Nintendo 3DS, as well as the possibility of a handheld Pikmin title. While neither franchise has ever graced a handheld such as the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, or Nintendo DS (though we did get to imagine a Smash Bros. title for the original Game Boy), the processing power of a Nintendo 3DS coupled with the control freedom of the Circle Pad and touch screen could make a Smash Bros. title or a new Pikmin work fairly decently. Will they happen?

“In theory both [Pikmin 3DS and Super Smash Bros. 3DS] are just as possible or likely – however neither title has been formally announced as being in development.”

Granted, any Nintendo franchise could conceivably be possible or likely (or unlikely) on the 3DS. That said, Iwata has stated that Pikmin would be perfect for the 3DS, which would make Smash “just as likely.” In addition, while “neither title has been formally announced as being in development,” what about informally?

Of course, now we’re just stretching for a confirmation… but would you like to see either one on a 3D handheld? We already know Masahiro Sakurai is experienced in 3DS development…

Pixel artist Arcade Art never ceases to amaze. Not content to make existing 8 bit game characters out of Perler beads, she’s set out to create original pieces of work such as the spriting community has never seen!

Got some Club Nintendo stars? Nintendo of Europe has added some Pikmin plushies to the Stars Catalogue for only 2000 stars each! Pick up a bunch of these, toss them around you, and watch as you never have to do any physical labor again!

Well, maybe not, but it’d still be nice to have one of these. I’m not quite sure how the stars to Euro exchange rate is over there, but judging by the fact that they offer special edition DS Lites for about 30,000 stars, I’m guessing each Pikmin plushie turns out to be around US$8.50. Not as good a deal as when I picked up half a dozen Luma toys from Burger King a while back, but hey, at least Club Nintendo in Europe is giving reason to earn stars. I’m still waiting on the Super Mario Galaxy Soundtrack here in the States…

Those of you hoping for the next big “gamer’s game” franchise from Nintendo to be made at the hands of Shigeru Miyamoto, you might be out of luck. In a recent interview, Miyamoto praised the up-and-coming younger developers within the company, saying that they’ll be the ones to bring us new and fresh properties.

…If we’ve got it right, Pikmin was the last original IP you came up with specifically for traditional gamers. Any idea when we can expect a new so-called hardcore property from you? We’re thinking more along the lines of a strictly hardcore title versus those you mentioned [e.g. Wii Sports, Nintendogs], which fall into the casual category, too.

Shigeru Miyamoto: No, I’m all dried up [laughs]. But luckily, there are lots of young and creative people at Nintendo, so I think they’re really going to be driving a lot of that new original IP and yeah, we do have a lot of really great stuff that we’re thinking about. And in terms of Pikmin, I’ve always thought of it more of an expanded audience title myself so if a longtime fans think of it as something for them and if our expanded fans think of it as something for them, well, that’s great for us.

Could it really be the end of an era? Or do you think he just hasn’t been hit with that great idea just yet?

While most of us are probably hoping to get more Pikmin in the future in the form of Pikmin 3, Flickr user craftyturtle1 will be getting some that have a little more sentimental value. Craftyturle1′s friend, ritapizza is making these miniature, crochet Pikmin as a gift! I wish I had a friend that could make me some crochet Pikmin…

I guess these multiple Luma toys I picked up from Burger King will have to suffice for now.

In one of the more interesting publicity stunts in a while, Nintendo has sent tiny potted plants to select members of the press, along with a letter from Captain Olimar:

Greetings! Here is a specimen I gathered on my interplanetary travels. I’ve been busy repairing my sleek ship, the Dolphin, after crashing onto a strange world. Through my many encounters, I’ve learned that commanding Pikmin with a simple point and click is a much more efficient and effective means of exploration. It will come in handy should I encounter any hostile life forms….

Additionally, my observations suggest that stimulating the specimen sample I’ve sent with water and sunlight over just a few short days should result in surprisingly rapid maturation!

It almost definitely has something to do with New Play Control Pikmin, the enhanced Wii port of the original GameCube Pikmin. Apparently the plants are supposed to mature in 7 to 14 days, at which point a message will be revealed. What kind of horrifying, genetically-modified monster plants are these? I’d probably be a bit nervous to water mine (if I had actually been sent one) on the off chance of that message being “FEED ME” à la Little Shop of Horrors.

You don’t see Capcom making it painfully obvious that they’re releasing “Wii-makes” of Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 0, or Resident Evil, nor can any passer-by tell that Sega’s The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return contains a game from 1998, except with added Wii controls. Even Nintendo’s own The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii doesn’t tout the difference. So picky me would be hesitant to buy (or repurchase, in this case) Pikmin for the Wii if North America’s packaging looks like its horrid PAL cover you see here. Is there a reason we can’t just get nice, clean, attractive box art?

Luckily, there’s that one CD Covers website, and I’ve got a color printer and some glossy paper to use. Those slip covers come right out.

Famitsu has revealed a few more tidbits about two more Play on Wii titles, namely Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis.

Pikmin will have a brand new save feature that saves your progress for every day so you can go back and play from any day you’ve already played. That should take some of the stress from the time limit. As for Mario Power Tennis, it gets one new feature you probably would have assumed anyway. A Wii Tennis-style control scheme. The game is compatible with the nunchuck, though, so you can most likely move your character with the control stick.

Pikmin launches Christmas Day and Mario Power Tennis launches January 15th, both in Japan.

Japanese game magazine Famitsu is reporting some surprising new details about two of the upcoming Play on Wii GameCube ports, specifically regarding Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. It was previously assumed that the only new additions to Play on Wii games would be Wii Remote-centered control schemes. Well, there’s more. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat will contain new and different content, including checkpoints, repositioned enemies, and even brand new levels. The controls will also be changed to those of a more traditional platformer, replacing the bongos with the Wii control stick and buttons.

No new content has been reported for Pikmin, but some control details have been revealed. As you’d probably assume, you can use the pointer to aim and A to throw or B to call Pikmin. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat will be released in Japan on December 11th, with Pikmin hitting on Christmas Day.

Official Nintendo documents showing planned releases for the coming year have revealed that both Pikmin (called it) and Mario Power Tennis are coming to North America under the Play on Wii label. Until now, there had been no official word on these or any other Play on Wii games for North America.

Pikmin 2, however, is missing from the list, despite being rated by the ESRB last month. The aforementioned list is far from complete, though, so don’t give up hope yet.

The ESRB has been taking steps to prevent leaks about games that haven’t yet been officially announced. That hasn’t stopped this little tidbit from slipping through.

The ESRB ratings for Pikmin and Pikmin 2 have been updated to include the Wii. This is a pretty strong indicator that the Wii versions are going to see North American releases. (Not as strong as an official confirmation, but it’s the next best thing.) None of the other Play On Wii titles have been rated by the ESRB yet, but keep an eye out for them.

Some people were a bit scared and confused when Nintendo announced a port of Pikmin for Wii. Was this the new Pikmin game we were promised by Miyamoto himself after E3?

Well stop panicking! Wii Pikmin is still on its way, as a Nintendo rep told Kombo earlier today. You can put away your pitchforks now. The torches, too. (Those little guys burn up pretty easily, after all!)

Club Nintendo magazine has a new interview with the Regginator regarding storage solution for your undoubtedly full refrigerator. Basically, they’re not sure what form of storage the end product will be, but if they’re going to provide one, they’re going to do it the right way. Online storage perhaps?

I want the people to have the right expectations. We have never said that it will be a hard drive, nor have we mentioned how we will fix this issue, but we are going to deliver a better way to store games.

The same magazine confirmed a new Zelda game, reconfirmed a new Pikmin game, and a “no comment” regarding Wii MotionPlus being utilized in either. At the same time, expect the Wii MotionPlus to be the last major first-party controller peripheral for a while.

You get some pretty interesting celebrations for a child when the parents are gamers. Game cakes, Mario parties, you name it. Lori from Clever Cake Studio was given the job of creating cupcakes for a pair of game loving parents for their baby shower, creating the Pikmin cupcakes you see above.

Originally, the marzipan Pikmin were supposed to be smaller and buried in the cupcakes (like in the games), but Lori went with the designs that didn’t involve sticking wires inside the tasty Pikmin. I’m pretty sure no one minded the change, just so long as they got to play Bulborbs and devour all those delicious Pikmin one by one.
