Instructables user cbm104 has posted a detailed tutorial on how create these leather hole tool punches, made by working the head of a nail with a metal file and hacksaw. I love that he chose to use Pac-Man and a Ghost to illustrate the technique. After 30 years of eating every pac-dot and blue-turned ghost in sight, I think it’s time Pac-Man deserved an icing-filled taste of his own medicine.

I made these gems for a class project, but based on the warm reception I received, exclamations like “adorable!” and “delicious!” to name a few, I decided they were worth sharing. Visually, at least.

I assure you, Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde never tasted this good.

After seeing season after season of awesome Halloween costumes show up on tots and toddlers all over the Internet, I’ve come to a conclusion. There’s no better way to express your love for any of your interests or hobbies than to have children. I mean, just look at ‘em. They raised a full set of ghosts. It’s so cute and nerdy I’ll even let it slide that they have two Blinkeys and no Clyde. They just need to carry plastic cherry buckets instead of the classic pumpkin, don’t you think?

Celebrating 30 years as one of the industry’s leading icons, Pac-Man sure has lost his Homer-yellow hue, now washed away into a sea of wrinkly despair.

Looking like an oddity out of Sick Sad World, this spherical disaster is truly frightening. Seriously though, what the hell is that? A past-due orange? A tadpole fetus? Tell me what you think in the comments.

The popularity of stop-motion videos has flourished in recent years thanks to YouTube showcasing user generated content. A French-Swiss artist Guillaume Reymond is the newest self-proclaimed filmmaker to gain notoriety, having created his own stop-motion flick simulating a game of Pac-Man, using 111 human beings in an auditorium.

Wearing different colored shirts, each person symbolizes a particular aspect of the original game’s pixels, from blue standing for the course barriers, to yellow being Pac-Man himself.

While I admire the ability to get over 100 people to change seats continuously during the entire four hour film session, the voice over work is annoying as all hell. You may want to turn down your speakers to avoid inadvertently punching yourself in the head. Mine is still bleeding.

At the recent Festival of Games in Utrecht, Netherlands, Pac-Man series creator Toru Iwatani had a little secret to share! No, not that kind. A speaker at the event, Iwatani decided to surprise the attendees by whipping out the original Pac-Man concept drawings from 1979.

What coincidental timing! Pac-Man just celebrated his 30th birthday, an event celebrated at E3 2010.

You really have to hand it to Namco Bandai for once again reinventing the wheel. Pac-Man made his pellet-hungry debut 30 years ago, yet the company has created a brand new arcade title set to enhance the original game’s competitive qualities tenfold.

Pac-Man Battle Royale is a cocktail style arcade game that allows up to 4-players to compete head-to-head. Each player controls their own colored Pac-Man character, across familiar grid stages while eating all the pac-dot cookies you can. This time however, instead of trying to gobble up your blue ghost enemies for arcade supremacy, you’re now trying to eat your competitors.

Once you eat a power pellet, your Pac-Man character will grow in size, putting your opponents in the shoes of the franchise’s fearful ghost. Fleeing like mice, opponents must escape the super-sized Pac-Man, or else they’ll get eaten and lose the round. The only way to counter a giant Pac-Man is to gobble a power pellet yourself, or to eat a fruit piece. This time around, eating fruit will change the layout of the puzzle board, likely saving you from an inconvenient demise (this is also achieved by eating all the pac-dots per stage). Simply put, the last man standing wins all.

During my time playing the game, I was quite impressed by just how addictive Battle Royale became. Players are all huddled around the same screen, each controlling their Pac-Man character across a shared screen. The pressure was on, and the crowds were forming, something easily achieved due to the waist-high flat table.

If competition isn’t all you’re after, you can still try and gobble ghosts and pac-dot cookies as part of a personal points game, but I was focused on crushing my competitors. After the end of every round, a winner is decided, with an ultimate winner chosen at the end. Ultimately, I came in second. Each of the four players are then given a title based on in-game achievements, such eating the most items.

Pac-Man Battle Royale is set to release this fall in arcade form, and hopefully in console form too. Regardless of whether or not an at-home version will release, I think Battle Royale could very well be the game to save arcades in America. Quote me, it’s that fun.

According to a report from Rescue Time, a software tool described as a calculator for “how businesses and individuals spend their time and attention”, the average person spends 4.5 minutes of time on Google per day. On the day Google released the playable Pac-Man game on their main page as a tribute to the 30th anniversary, that time jumped by 36 seconds, accounting for an additional 4.8 million total hours. Assuming that each Google user earns $25/hr (a ridiculous figure, but let’s hope that’s an average), that comes out to $120 million dollars.

But as any seasoned procrastinator knows, those hours aren’t really “lost”. They’re made up for in the mad scramble to get your work done afterwards, duh!

It was thirty years ago this month that Pac-Man first released in Japan, and later abroad. The game introduced players to one of the world’s most addictive arcade games of all time. To celebrate the success of the franchise, the game’s creator Toru Iwatani (pictured right) gave some insight into the creative process of creating one of the world’s more notorious gaming icons. Here are some of highlights.

• Pac-Man was introduced to the world as one of the first “cute” video game characters. The arcades were mainly filled with shooters and more aggressive action oriented titles, so Iwatani set out to create a game that could be universally enjoyed by girls and boys.

• The Pac-Man cartoon was highly successful, at one point with a rating at 56%.

• While Pac-Man was designed to resemble a pizza, his yellow color was to give him a neutral look, that would suit a friend or foe.

• Pac-Man got his name from the eating sound “Paku” which means “chomp.” Initially titled “Puck-Man” the game eventually dropped “Puck” for “Pac” in the U.S., and eventually to Japan, due to its similarities to the F-word.

• The game is more friendly than many think, where the premise is described as a battle of Pac-Man’s cookies. It’s similar to Tom and Jerry, where they aren’t enemies, just competitive.

Google.com is visited by millions each day, offering its visitors a different artist interpretation of the company’s logo several times each month. If you’ve visited today, you likely noticed the Google artwork has been replaced by a familiar Pac-Man screenshot, with the letters g-o-o-g-l-e placed into the level. In actuality, the new found art is more than just a screenshot, it’s a game!

Simply click the “Insert a Coin” bar located to the right of the “Google Search” key, and begin an intense Pac-Man session right in the middle of your browser. The game of choice was decided due in large part to Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary celebration. Happy birthday, Pac-Man! This brings me back to the days of eating Pac-Man cereal as a youngster, easily the most delicious creation ever made.

Today may just be your most unproductive day at school or work yet.

It’s been thirty years since Pac-Mania swept the nation. Can you believe it? The first Pac-Man arcade machines hit Japanese arcades 30 years ago this upcoming May. Pac-Man went on to become the best selling coin operated game in history.

These days, Pac-Man can still burn a hole in your wallet, either through gorgeous Championship Editions released on XBOX or iPhone, or through one of the many arcade machines that are still sold and distributed everywhere. To commemorate the firm grip Pac-Man has held on our hearts and our gaming budgets for the past three decades, Namco-Bandai is releasing a series of leather wallets, available in three colors (black, red, and blue) and priced at about $158 USD.

Sadly, from the pictures it looks like there’s not too much room inside for arcade coins. Boo.

Before I decided to go into music education and game journalism, I was pretty set on being some kind of astronomer or engineer. Astronomy has amazed me since I was a toddler, and I’m ridiculously giddy that this little post came up.

The Cassini spacecraft, currently orbiting Saturn, mapped out the temperature across the surface of Mimas, the moon famously known for its massive Herschel Crater, using the craft’s infrared spectrometer. Rather than finding a gradual change in temperature based on how far each region had rotated into the sunlight, scientist found a baffling, distinct separation in temperatures. The side that had only just entered the sunlight (or “morning” on Mimas) showed the warmest readings, while a smaller spot of warmth was found near Herschel, resulting in a temperature map that resembled the iconic Pac-Man character.

Paul Helfenstein, a member of Cassini’s imaging team, noted that the process behind this finding is not unique to Mimas. Thus, there is hope that we may yet find Mrs. Pac-Man nearby.

A one of a kind piece for a once in a lifetime event! OK, so a Pac-Man kill screen isn’t a once in a lifetime event for the likes of someone like Steve Wiebe or Billy Mitchell (or new Pac-Man champion Hank Chien, for that matter). But for a person with a shortened attention span such as myself, seeing this graffiti-inspired painting is as close as I’m ever going to get. And you know what? I’m okay with it. I’ll leave the screen killing to the Kings of Kong. The painting, however…the painting I want!

Etsy artist K8bit (love love love that name) is a prodigy in polymer. Viewing her newly rehauled Etsy page is an exercise in self restraint: I’ve neither the budget nor the wide gaping holes in my flesh necessitated to rock these gorgeous gauges, but they are irresistible nonetheless.
