SEGA confirms Virtua Fighters for Sonic All-Stars Racing

The roster for Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing seems to have around 2,000 racers at this point. If your favorite SEGA character hasn’t been announced yet, fear not. SEGA’s European blog has confirmed even more playable characters. Virtua Fighter’s Jacky and Akira are set to race in a red Ferrari. Of course the red Ferrari was my ride of choice in SEGA’s arcade racer OutRun, an inclusion that’s too perfect to not be intentional.

Additionally, old school characters Mobo and Robo will be joining the game. The two are known from the Sega Genesis title Bonanza Bros. Additionally, SEGA announced that while not included as a playable character, NiGHTS is getting represented.

We’ve given NiGHTS a very important role. He starts all the races, and also finishes them too! He also resides over Time Trial, whenever you set a new lap record, you’ll have NiGHTS flying along with you celebrating!

You’ve really got to hand it to SEGA for going all out on this racer. February 23rd can’t come soon enough.

OutRun arcade cabinet turned into real car

The arcade racer OutRun was a staple at most arcades in the 80s and 90s, but could you imagine seeing one of those racing cabinets driving next to you? As part of an experiment by Garnet Hertz, a faculty member at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, an OutRun project began to convert an arcade cabinet into a replica 1984 Ferari Testarossa, one which actually drives.

Aside from plans to add a motor and other car-like parts that you’d expect, the project will use the iPhone’s accelerometer to read turning and acceleration movements, and an OutRun app to replicate the road on which you are actually driving. While others will think you are playing a video game, you’ll actually be using that replicated screen to drive, avoid cars, change lanes, etc. Although it won’t replicate it perfectly, Hertz believes that in a limited or controlled environment, the application could prove pretty successful, even if just limited to an iPhone app.
