This trailer is especially exciting for Metroid fans of old, if I do say so myself. It also covers a lot of ground in Metroid history as sort of a catch-up for would-be new fans, (classic Nintendo move). Below you’ll find new screen shots and art, including both scenery and pictures of the madame in metal, released especially for this week’s Gamescom, as well as one recent gameplay trailer we missed.

8 bit makes it better: Resident Evil 4 painting for charity

A great piece of art for a great cause.

This painting, entitled Los Illuminados, was created by my friend Arcade Art for Child’s Play, a gamer’s charity organization that collects games, books, and cash to help kids at children’s hospitals around the world. The $35 prints are limited to a run of fifty and feature an 8-bit style rendering of Leon S Kennedy in a scene from Resident Evil 4. Child’s Play will be receiving 50% of the proceeds from each print.

Now, this charity is particularly close to my heart because of one of the places they donate to. In 1999, I had to undergo physical therapy in Seattle Children’s Hospital, a lengthy painful stay that was made infinitely easier by the N64s in every waiting room. If Child’s Play wants to help make those hospital trips a less traumatic experience for children, then I am all for it! I’m tearin’ up just thinking about it.

On the site’s main page, you can click on a controller on any part of the US map and donate directly to the facility of your choice. There are also donation areas in the UK, Canada, Australia, and a few other countries. Make a difference! Make a donation today!

Needs more headbanging! No just kidding, they’ve done quite enough in this video. I get whiplash just looking at ‘em. This arrangement is awesome and the edit job on the video isn’t bad, either. The ending, around 2:00, is particularly amusing.

C’mon Pac-Man light my fire

Did you know its nearly Pac-Man’s 30th birthday? Our little yellow dot man is all growed up (*sob*). You know what this means. That’s right, he gets big boy toys now. Like this limited edition commemorative Pac-Man themed Zippo from BanPresto. At about $93 its also a big boy price but given the craftmanship it looks like its worth every penny.

Or at least, that’s what I’ll be telling myself when I murmur “wocka wocka wocka” with every flick of the flame. Also available in Dig Dug, Galaxia, and Xevious.

Excitebike coming to WiiWare!

Exclamation points!!! You pixelphiles out there (*raises hand*) will be happy with the “Nintendo Week” video from this week. Excitebike is coming to the Wii in the form of WiiWare, and its coming with an upgrade. The 20-year-old classic, dubbed Excitebike World Rally, will be updated to propel the 2D-8 bit graphics into the 3rd dimension. It will also have a tracker editor, online multiplayer, and utilize the Wii Remote motion controls. Available November 9.

Abuse! NES cartridge clocks and hard drives

Abuse! I cry video game abuse. This is only acceptable when its a sh!tty game. So unless they put a Super Mario Bros 2 sticker over a copy of Shaq Fu, then I completely disapprove.

This 500 GB affront to all that is holy costs a whopping $150. The clocks are $20. The heartache, however, is free.

I love the idea of having a password locked flash drive. However, its entirely too grown up for me. My files consist of animated gifs of cats injuring themselves, or photos of naked celebrities. I’m not Ethan Hunt or Doogie Howser. I don’t own the Sword Of A Thousand Truths. I just don’t have anything worth protecting.

But this is a fun spin on a common project nonetheless. You can find dozens if not hundreds of flash drives constructed from old gaming gear, but one that’s password protected by the Konami Code? You my friend might have just won the Internet.

Maiming video games is cool: portable NES cartridge system

I’m not too clear on the finer points of console modding (so far as I can tell it involves destroying classic consoles and cartridges for your own amusement. Abuse!) but this is impressive nonetheless. Another would-be Ben Heck has delicately ripped out the guts of an NES cartridge and shoved the necessary components (in this case, a Chinese-made media player) in to create a new yet retro portable gaming experience. Its very “now-tro”, if you will.

3 game cases and 2 controllers were maimed in the making of this veritable Nintendo Frankenstein, so its up for sale to recoup the losses. Hit the jump for a picture of its innards.

It’s shaped like an NES controller, smells like Mountain Dew, and resembles a Hershey’s Cookies and Cream bar. Now all it needs is to taste like Cheetos and I won’t know whether to enshrine it or make painful (but sterile) love to it.

It’s almost Halloween! You know what that means: Christmas pre-season for bored housewives and Women’s Home Journal readers everywhere!

All jokes aside, I actually want these for my tree this year. I personally go with video game themes for some of my holiday decorations. OK, I lie. It’s the only way you can get me to decorate, period. I get compliments on my living room decor, but I got every last piece of furniture from my aunt. It’s basically hand-me-down good taste. My walls are lined with Mega Man portraits and Super Mario fan art. I’m not exactly the definition of femininity. And I’m lazy. Between the two…well, there’s your explanation for why my bathroom has a Dr. Mario theme and perpetually smells like dudes.

Old school, meet new school: USB powered NES controller

This could not have come at a better time…well, for me anyway. I’ve been doing a lot of research on (read: using this blog as an excuse to play) the fan-made NES games widely available online. I’d been fully prepared to try them out with the keyboard controls, but with this…maybe I don’t have to?

Not that I’m not awesome with the strafe keys (’cause I am), but who can resist playing Super Mario Brothers: Shine Expedition as its meant to be played?

Bit. Trip Beat redefines retro on WiiWare

There has been a resurgence of retro styled games as of late, but none are quite as old school as Gaijin Games’ Bit. Trip Beat. The title is a music/rhythm blend of streaming colorful blips that you must meet with a paddle as they move to the left. It looks interesting as the levels get more complex, and could be a hit if priced right. The game will also feature a 4-player co-op mode (sold!), although how it will work hasn’t been revealed. Watch out for it on WiiWare soon.
