Gamers often get labeled as couch potatoes, or loners that spend a ridiculous amount of time as hermits on the couch playing video games. That stereotype might not be that far off however. A new study by NPD Group claims “extreme” gamers play nearly 48.5 hours of video games per week. That’s like working 6 days a week.

Overall, the average U.S. gamer spends 13 hours per week playing, an increase of 42 minutes over last year’s findings. While that may seem high to some overly protective, technology fearing parents, it’s quite small compared to the national average TV consumption rate of 35 hours per week, based on a study by Nielsen.

Another interesting statistic found is that portable gaming is down a whopping 16%. That number proves that Apple’s portable devices, which aren’t included in the survey, are without a doubt encroaching on Nintendo’s DS and Sony’s PSP handhelds. With the imminent release of the Nintendo 3DS however, I guarantee next year’s numbers will make us all look obsessed.

Video game industry tracker NPD’s new report highlighted a huge drop in sales for April 2010. Software and hardware sales in the industry’s largest market, the United States, fell 26 percent to about $766.2 million – the fourth-largest decline in nearly a decade.

Hardware sales decreased 37 percent ($249.3 million) while software sales decreased 22 percent ($398.5 million). In total, year-to-date industry sales decreased a whopping 11 percent.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction was the top-selling game in April selling nearly 486.1k units, with its exclusivity to the Xbox 360 giving Microsoft a huge boost.

In hardware, the Nintendo DS is sold well at nearly 440.8k units – but that’s a far cry from March’s 700.8k units. The Nintendo Wii’s sales decreased to only 277.2k units sold in April. Xbox 360 and PS3 sales hovered around 180k units.

The NPD report for March 2010 has been released, and it was a good month all-around. The industry saw growth in all areas except for hardware sales, but the NPD’s Anita Frazier explained that unit sales for hardware were up over March of last year, it’s merely the lower retail prices that caused the total dollar sales to drop. As expected, the DS and Wii dominated the month, selling over 700K and 550K, respectively, but the 360 and PS3 managed to sell a respectable 300+K each.

On the software side, 2 SKUs each of Pokemon, Final Fantasy XIII, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 made the top 10, leaving only 4 other slots open. Combined, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver topped the charts with nearly 1.8 million copies sold between them. Final Fantasy XIII‘s combined PS3 and 360 sales come in second with 1.32 million copies sold, while Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for PS3 and 360 combined for nearly 1.28 million copies sold.

You can check out the numbers after the break, including the software chart with each of those SKUs separated into different entities, revealing a different #1. Read on!

The NPD report data is in! December 2009 and the year’s totals are a testament to Nintendo’s market power. Though 2009′s sales were 8% less than the industry experienced in 2008, December 2009 sales were actually 4% more than December 2008, coming in at a tasty $5.53 billion.

The Nintendo Wii dominated the holiday season’s video game hardware sales, selling 3.81 million units. The Nintendo DS came in second with 3.31 million units sold, far more than Sony’s PlayStation 3 which sold 1.36 million units, coming in third place. Software sales dropped 7% to $2.58 billion, but six of the top 10 best-selling games for December 2009 were for the Wii or DS. No easy feat, Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. defeated the combined 360 and PS3 sales for Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Take that, gratuitously violent military shooters.

Bad news Mario. You could have just stayed on the ground in the Mushroom Kingdom to keep Nintendo on top, instead of your galactic journey in 2007. According to NPD sales figures, New Super Mario Bros. Wii has beaten U.S. lifetime sales figures for Super Mario Galaxy, and the game released less than 2 months ago. While Galaxy to date has sold 4.1 million units, NSMBW has sold 4.2 million.

While both titles are great, I’d say gamers seem to be going for familiarity instead of quality. Super Mario Galaxy is a far better title in every aspect, but it’s easy to see why Mario’s 2D linear adventure would be more mainstream. Regardless, it’s good to see Nintendo is happy to please all fans by taking part in creating old and new Mario experiences, similar to the decision of offering Link and Toon Link adventures.

Despite pleas from the gods of quality titles, Nintendo’s blacksheep of software has become the United States’ biggest selling non-PC video game release of all time. Because Wii Play is bundled with a Wii Remote, many gamers take issue with the idea that the game should even be a contender for breaking software records. The collection of fairly mediocre mini games bundled with the controller has served as a perfect formula for bringing the title into the homes of nearly every Wii owner.

Sales for the game have kept the title in the NPD’s top 10 list since the game’s 2007 release. Among the list of biggest selling non-PC video games in the US are Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock at number 2 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas at number 3. Nintendo’s own Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii are ranked at number 5 and 6, respectively. For the complete top ten, continue reading below.

February’s figures for the US are in, and according to the NPD Group, total industry sales for the year so far are up 11%. February alone saw a total growth of about 10% in terms of earnings. An interesting thing to note, however, is that the average price of games and hardware has fallen in comparison to last year, and so that 9% increase in software earnings is really about a 14% increase in unit sales.

This of course was led in part by the continuing success of Wii Fit, which managed to move an additional 644,000 units in the US last month on top of about 750,000 Wii consoles. Those 644k Wii Balance Board bundles were enough to outsell the individual Street Fighter IV SKUs, with the 360 version selling about 446,000 copies whereas the PS3 version sold about 403,000. Not bad for a game that’s almost a year old.

The gaming industry continues to grow, as the numbers provided from the NPD group for January sales reflect nothing but positives. Total industry sales jumped 13% over last January to $1.33 billion, aided in part by Wii console sales over 750,000 and DS Lite sales just over the half-million mark.Wii Fit led the way in software sales despite its premium price, but you know it’s pretty much the older demographic picking up the game after their kids bought them a Wii for the holidays.

Nintendo game sales account for nearly half of all game sales in the United States in 2008. The Wii and DS together sold 132 million of the 268 million games sold last year, which gives Nintendo 49% of all game sales in 2008. Sony came in second with 86 million (or 39%) and Microsoft was third with 50 million (or 19%). Remember that unlike Nintendo or Sony, Microsoft doesn’t have a handheld to. What’s more, the Wii’s tie ratio (number of games sold for each console) is 6, identical to that of the PlayStation 3, reiterating the fact that Wii owners do, indeed, buy games.

Fun Fact: Reggie Fils-Aime lives in a house made of gold.

…and they’re in! December’s NPD data for US sales as well as the 2008 totals are listed after the break for your amazement. Despite downturns in the economy, it looks like people were still snatching up video games throughout the holiday season. Industry sales for the month jumped 9% over last year to a record $5.29 billion. Over 2 million Wii consoles were sold in the month of December, outpaced only by the 3 million-plus DS Lite consoles sold. Of course, software played a huge role in the success as well.

Wii Play was the big one in December and in 2008 overall, selling 1.46 during the final month of the year and a whopping 5.28 units for the year. Actually, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl swept 2008′s top four sales records for Nintendo, and you can bet that Wii Sports would have easily eclipsed all of them had it been counted separately.

You can check out all the numbers after the break. Here’s hoping for a decent 2009!

After hearing so much about how this was going to be the weakest holiday season in terms of sales, we’d be happy at the fact that our resilient video game industry could remain constant through the hard times. Sorry to disappoint you all, but the industry didn’t do that. Instead, it bulldozed right over last year’s figures.

Industry sales went up 10% to $2.91 billion for the month in the United States alone. What contributed to that? Well, Gears of War 2, for one. But the big story for this Nintendo fan base is that Nintendo moved 1.57 million DS Lite systems and a staggering 2 million Wii consoles (outpacing last year’s 981,000 and this year’s Wedbush Morgan’s prediction of 1.4 million).

December’s results should be fun, but until then, last month’s numbers can be read after the break.

NPD Group: November 2008

Industry Sales: $2.91 billion (+10% from November ‘07)
Hardware Sales: $1.21 billion (+10%)
Software Sales: $1.45 billion (+11%)
Accessory Sales: $255.4 million (+7%)

YTD: $16.04 billion (+22%)

Nintendo DS: 1,570,000
Xbox 360: 836,000
PSP: 421,000
PlayStation 3: 378,000
PlayStation 2: 206,000

On track to make in excess of $22 billion this year alone, the video game industry topped $1.3 billion during the month of October. A surge in Wii sales (over 800k) led the way, to which we can only say “Wiiiiiiii!”

On the software side, Wii Fit led the way for games on Nintendo platforms (second overall to Fable II), while Wii Music landed outside of the top ten with only 81,000 copies sold between its October 20th release and the end of the month. Full details past the break.

You can read it all after the jump, but my first thought after reading it? Only four games in the overall Top 10 were for Nintendo platforms. None for DS! Ouch!

The good news is that with no 360-exclusive launch matching the magnitude of Halo 3 last September, the Wii enjoyed a 37% sales increase over last month. Imagine what sales might have been like had we gotten something a little more substantial than great Wario and Kirby games.

UNIQUE CONTROLS PUT WII AT NO. 1 FOR SEPTEMBER NPD; NINTENDO DS AT NO. 2

Oct. 16, 2008

Backed by a variety of unique interfaces, Nintendo’s Wii™ console topped the U.S. video game hardware sales charts with nearly 687,000 units sold in September, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Nintendo DS™ was the No. 2 best-selling system, with nearly 537,000 sold.

Wii enjoyed the biggest monthly unit sales increase with 234,000 more units sold in September than August. Wii also saw a year-over-year increase of more than 37 percent over September 2007.

Four games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top 10 best-selling games of the month, including Wii Fit™ at No. 2 with nearly 518,000 sold, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 4 with more than 353,000 sold, Wii Play™ at No. 7 with nearly 243,000 sold and LucasArts’ Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Wii at No. 8 with more than 223,000 sold.

“The four Wii games in the top 10 all feature controls just not possible on other video game systems,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The Wii Balance Board and Wii Wheel give players new ways to interact with their games, while the Wii Remote controller transforms into a pool cue, table tennis paddle or lightsaber. Consumers have truly responded to this variety of entertainment options.”

September was all about unleashing the Force. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed had moved 1.5 million copies in the United States by September 23rd, and you can check out how it fared for the month on the 360, PS3, and Wii platforms after the break.

Overall sales were down compared to last September because, well, Star Wars just isn’t Halo 3 to gamers. Luckily for us Nintenfolk, the lack of a Halo 3 launch doesn’t change a thing. Wii Fit and the Nintendo DS sold well over half a million each in the United States alone, and nearly 700,000 of the Wii systems flew off US store shelves last month.

It’s football season! That means: another year’s worth of Madden games. Madden NFL 09 accounted for 2.3 million games sold in the United States last month, of which 5% were on Nintendo’s Wii platform. You can check out the big number’s from the NPD Group’s August report after the break, but Wii Fit dropped to #4 overall for the month despite selling more copies than it did in July…all thanks to America’s love of football.

Wii and DS sales dipped for the month, not surprisingly, but not enough to disturb Nintendo’s 1-2 tandem. Read on for the rest of the numbers!
