Looking forward to No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle? Enjoy it, because it may be the very last No More Heroes game for Wii. Director Suda 51 explains his feelings:

I really want to make NMH a big franchise, and with this second episode have bigger success. I’m putting a lot of care into developing this IP, as I feel there’s a lot of potential. [However] I think this is the last NMH that is going to be developed on Wii. To expand NMH to new possibilities, we need a new platform. Wii is a great platform, but we’ve done everything we can with it now.

Suda has recently been making googly eyes at Microsoft’s Project Natal. Could the 360 be the next destination for No More Heroes, or will Suda opt for the PS3 Wand to keep things familiar while taking advantage of the system’s ungodly amount of horsepower? Maybe if Desperate Struggle sells enough, he’ll decide to keep the series where its fans are. Hint.

No More Heroes didn’t exactly light Japan on fire, but Japanese gaming mag Famitsu has some brand new details about its sequel, No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle. Here it is, for your list-reading pleasure. Take a look past the break.

• Despite what Suda 51 said in his recent interview, Famitsu claims that the game is only about 50% done.
• Travis is still in the UAA, but has let his rank fall to number 51. Losing a rank usually means dying a violent death, so it’s unclear why Travis is still alive in this case.
• Santa Destroy is a very different place now. The city has been turned into a resort hot spot, most likely because of real world complaints that the open world in No More Heroes was too boring.
• Early information stated that Desperate Struggle would be about Travis avenging his best friend’s death, but it seems that his friend is only being harassed by gunmen instead. (That friend is confirmed to be Bishop, owner of Beef Head Video from the first game.)
• Sylvia Christel makes a return, and is still Travis’ contact with the UAA, which is kind of a weird thought if you’ve finished the first game.
• The Famitsu article shows a “2” after “No More Heroes” in the logo. It’s not clear if this title change is for the whole world or just Japan.
• Some screenshots and artwork show Travis wielding two beam katanas.
• One new character is named Nathan Copeland. You can see him in the image above. The magazine doesn’t really give much detail about him.

1up got a chance to interview Suda 51 recently, and the discussion quickly turned to No More Heroes and its sequel, No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle. When asked how far along production is, Suda had a very simple answer:

It’s the very end. If I had to say one word, I’d say it’s at the very end of production.

That’s like seven words, but who cares? That’s certainly good news. The game still isn’t due out until early 2010, but this means there probably won’t be any delays. When asked about whether Desperate Struggle would be shown at E3, Suda answered that it definitely won’t be playable there, but he hopes to be able to show something.

One of the more beloved No More Heroes characters is returning for its sequel, No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle.  This information comes from an interview with Destroy Man’s voice actor, Josh Keaton.

I finished doing a Destroy Man part on a game called No More Heroes, which was popular. He’s kind of an unapologetic jerk of a character, and he makes a return in what I’m assuming is a second installment of that game, so I just finished that.

It doesn’t technically confirm that the character will be returning for No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, but he is coming back in some form and it’s probably a pretty safe assumption that it will be for the new game. (Though perhaps the most interesting news here is that voice actors apparently don’t necessarily know exactly what their work is going to be used for.) Ready your nipple miniguns and crotch lasers!

No More Heroes had a lot going for it, but perhaps the biggest strike against it was the pitiful overworld. It’s still not really clear if the overworld was simply poor game design, or a joke about the emptiness of sandbox-style games. Well, expect things to be pretty different for the sequel. In Suda 51′s own words in a GameSetWatch interview:

Yeah, we’ll once again manage to do what we want to do with realizing the open world, but expect big changes for No More Heroes 2‘s open world.

Ok, so that’s pretty vague. He could be planning to turn the entire overworld into a giant mound of cheese. Well, anything would be a step up from the overwhelming whiteness that was Santa Destroy.

Eurogamer has released an interview they’ve done with Suda 51, director of No More Heroes. The interview covers a few new tidbits about No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle. So let’s recap what we know, shall we?

• All of this.
• It takes place three years after the end of No More Heroes.
• The censored version of the game will be similar to the censored version of the first game in terms of content.
• Suda 51 hasn’t yet used the WiiMotion Plus, but he’s interested in using it in Desperate Struggle.
• The game will be darker and more serious than it’s prequel, but it will still have a sense of humour.
• The open world of No More Heroes was a disappointment to everyone, including Suda 51. He won’t be making the same mistakes with No More Heroes 2.

Are you excited yet? Well, the game isn’t set to release until 2010, so try to control yourself.

Last time around, Europe ended up with the censored Japanese version of No More Heroes, with less blood. (People were still dismembered and cut into pieces, but less blood spurted out in the censored version. Apparently that makes it less violent.) According to Eurogamer, No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle will come in two flavours in Europe. One super violent version, and one slightly less super violent version for places that won’t allow the former version, such as Germany.

So which version will Japan get? Well, if you look at the press release, possibly neither. Tentacle rape anime porn aside, Japan is strict with its censorship laws. On top of that, the original No More Heroes didn’t sell too well in Japan. It tooks 20 minutes before someone bought a copy at the official launch event, and even that was a just a Famitsu reporter. (Apparently autographed toilet paper wasn’t enough of an incentive for most folks.)

Well, I can say I’m happy to live in North America. I need to satisfy my bloodlust.

If you haven’t played the amazing action game No More Heroes (and statistically speaking, you probably haven’t) run out and buy it. Right now. Play it to completion. (Go ahead, I’ll wait.) Done? Alright. Now watch this clip.

Aren’t you excited? You should be, because No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle is coming. So far there’s no information besides the teaser and the name, but that’s all you should need to start feeling all tingly and trembly. One thing to note is subtitle, Desperate Struggle. Could this mean it will be a DS game? If so, could slashing people in half with a stylus be as satisfying as slashing them in half with a Wii Remote? Either way, a fantastic game that ends with the words “Too bad there won’t be a sequel,” is getting a sequel. Be happy.

[Update: The official press release (which is in Japanese) states the game will indeed be a Wii game, and is set for a 2010 release. Maybe the rest of the world will get lucky and it will launch outside of Japan first. The first game didn't do so hot there anyway.]
