The year’s sales totals through November are in, thanks to Media Create. Pokémon Black and White combined to take top honors, selling nearly 4.5 million units, trailed closely by New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which inched past the 4 million mark. Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3 came in at a distant third, just shy of selling 2 million units.

It’s been pointed out that since the numbers after the break run only through November, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd does not appear due to it not being released a day (or more) sooner. Taking its sales of over 3 million units into account, it would easily slide into 3rd on this list.

You can view the top 30 list after the break, with each title accompanied by its year-to-date sales. Lifetime sales for games released prior to 2010 are listed in parenthesis.

As part of Nintendo’s ongoing 25th anniversary celebration of Super Mario Bros., it appears European gamers are getting a special red Wii bundle. Unlike Japan’s previously announced red Wii, this new set will include a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a copy of Wii Sports, and will come preinstalled with the original Donkey Kong.

Seems to defeat the purpose of celebrating Mario’s 25 years by not including the special 25th anniversary edition of Super Mario Bros. like the Japanese red Wii, but it’s still a great offering for those who somehow haven’t picked up a Wii yet.

As for North American gamers? We get nothing.

Nintendo is currently touring the country, promoting summer fitness and fun with their Wii Games 2010 tournament. The competition pits teams of 2 to 4 players against rivals in their respective age groups for a chance to win great prizes, including a trip to Los Angeles to compete in a national tournament.

I checked out the Wii Games event held in Virginia this weekend, and it was pretty spectacular. You had players young and old competing for Wii supremacy in games such as Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort. For those not competing, Nintendo has plenty of free-play booths set up for attendees to take part in. Those games included the likes of Just Dance, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Super Mario Galaxy 2. And just by playing a few games, you could take home a few cool prizes including 1-up mushroom tins, mascot pins and plush dolls of Mario and friends.

Nintendo also set up a booth for folks to pick up a free custom t-shirt (I even got one too, as you’ll see in the video above). Overall, the event is a ton of fun for anyone who attends. And it’s probably the best free activity you’ll take part in all summer.

Gaming retail powerhouse GameStop is trying to appeal to the 2D Mario fan prior to the galactic return of Mario’s 3D adventures. Right now, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is just $34.99, and that’s for a new copy of the game. That’s $15 off the price of the game, found elsewhere for $49.99.

Of course, their online webstore claims the deal is an online exclusive. Regardless, if you haven’t picked up Mario’s New adventure, you may want to get on that now.

It looks like Nintendo’s being a bit more conservative with their sales expectations for Super Mario Galaxy 2 in Japan. The game’s initial shipment for Japan is reported to be in the 500,000 to 600,000 range, which is slightly lower than the initial shipment of the original Super Mario Galaxy. Considering how abysmal the total sales for the first game were (when compared to other Mario titles), this should be no surprise.

Comparitively, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was a much bigger success in Japan, so you’d have to assume that part of the reason for the inclusion of 2D gameplay and what’s essentially a 2D hub/map in Galaxy 2 was brought on by the success of NSMBW.

The latest issue of Famitsu shows off some great new screenshots of Super Mario Galaxy 2. Of note however, are two screens that show a next-gen, very woodsy version of the Mushroom Kingdom, as featured in several Mario titles, including November’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Mario can be seen progressing to the right, only to uncover a few question mark boxes. And who’s with him? Why it’s yellow Toad and blue Toad! Now the game is really morphing the separation I had established between 2D and 3D Mario games. I’m pretty sure this could destroy the space time continuum.

It seems everyone has a blast playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The game was practically designed to bring people together… I never play it alone now, and I can usually find enough friends or family for a full team at any time. Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury of enjoying a nice session of the game with people close to them. Here’s a tidbit from Nintendo’s mastermind, Shigeru Miyamoto, from the Super Mario Galaxy 2 interview from earlier:

Up until quite recently, the most played game [in my household] would be the fourth edition of the Professor Layton series. Because my two children have already left home, unfortunately nobody was kind enough to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii with me.

Awww, that’s so sad! 1-player New Super Mario Bros. Wii can get pretty lonely in a hurry! I know they excluded online play to try and encourage more in-the-same-room playing, but this is just one of those times I think it really should have been included.

In case you weren’t able to make it out to this year’s “That Takes the Cake!” contest in Austin, Texas, we’ll give you a partial summary – the part that matters to us gamers. In the category of “Special Occasion or Novelty Tiered Cakes,” a New Super Mario Bros. Wii cake won second place, sandwiched in between a Candyland cake in third and a Hat Box cake in first. Yeah. A hat box.

Bad news Mario.  You could have just stayed on the ground in the Mushroom Kingdom to keep Nintendo on top, instead of your galactic journey in 2007.  According to NPD sales figures, New Super Mario Bros. Wii has beaten U.S. lifetime sales figures for Super Mario Galaxy, and the game released less than 2 months ago. While Galaxy to date has sold 4.1 million units, NSMBW has sold 4.2 million.

While both titles are great, I’d say gamers seem to be going for familiarity instead of quality. Super Mario Galaxy is a far better title in every aspect, but it’s easy to see why Mario’s 2D linear adventure would be more mainstream.  Regardless, it’s good to see Nintendo is happy to please all fans by taking part in creating old and new Mario experiences, similar to the decision of offering Link and Toon Link adventures.

It’s no surprise to anyone that New Super Mario Bros. Wii has done extraordinarily well for Nintendo’s Wii console, which had notoriously battled an uphill climb throughout much of 2009.  The mega-hit released in Japan on December 3rd, and sold 3,002,753 in just seven weeks time. Take that Modern Warfare 2!

Mario, Luigi, Toad and…Toad reached the 3 million mark faster than both Wii Sports and Wii Fit, which also sold over 3 million copies each. Now in its fourth year, and with a new Zelda, Metroid and Mario Galaxy title all coming this year, it appears the Wii has a lot of life left.

Toys R Us was guilty of it when they used a fan made Mario Kart Wii boxart on their website for a few months time.  Now Blockbuster is next in line, using a fan made boxart taken from VGBoxArt.  The game of choice? New Super Mario Bros. Wii, one of the highest selling titles of the past few months.  Although the fan cover is impressive, it looks much different than that of the original, something that I’m amazed the photoshopper didn’t realize when compiling the images.

It’s incredible to me that these companies can get away with not double checking.  Google is just a click away for a quick visual reference check. Shame on you! The fan made boxart can be seen in full in the link below.

Mario’s first console bound, 2D title since Super Mario World debuted with great success across the world.  Sales figures for Japan have been released, and the chubby plumber managed to sell a whopping 937,000 units.  That impressive number not only makes New Super Mario Bros. Wii the highest first week sales for a Wii title to date, but it also beats previous record breaker Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Looks like Mario has beat Mario! It should also be noted that 420,000 of those units sold where purchased on the first day. “Woo hoo!”

OK so I was never talented enough to do this in Super Mario Bros. 3. I always exploited poor Lakitu for 99 lives in level 3-4. And on the DS version of New Super Mario Bros.? Nu-uh not happening.
