An early build of The Legend of Zelda for the NES has supposedly surfaced. There’s no way to know whether or not it’s the real deal, but it’s always fun to wonder, “What if?”

For example, this version of the game looks to be immensely easier, with dungeons containing easier and fewer enemies than the final release of the game. In addition, those combing through the prototype have reported that rupees are quite plentiful in this version of Hyrule — leaving Link’s money maxed out for the majority of the time.

You can head on over to check out the documented differences, which include early dungeon maps that suggest several rooms were removed in the final version. Take it all with a grain of salt, of course… but enjoy it nonetheless.

Ever get to the point where you play so many video games, you start to see them everywhere? How about consoles? Photographer Joseph Ford and his creative team crafted these photos for an issue of Amusement Magazine in a feature entitled “If I Were President”. While I’m not sure why one would need to be president to approve the blueprints of public or private buildings, I’m a big fan of the layout. I think the best part is in the Nintendo DS picture above, which as you can see has solar panels where the screens should be. The PS3 photo below also reminds me of  Columbia Center in Seattle, which really does look like a giant PS3!

I love seeing quality game cakes. Some are complicated, some are simple, but what I appreciate about them is their attention to detail.

Check out a perfect example of that in this cake created by Rachel Melnick, commissioned by a bride as a surprise for her groom. This NES cake didn’t have a ton of flash or frills, but what’s there looked almost 100% authentic. In fact, there’s even a picture of the couple picking up and holding the controllers as actual controllers. The colors, proportions, everything was absolutely perfect. Absolutely beautiful. If only all cakes received this much care while being made, I’m sure we’d have a much more thorough collection of wedding cakes to show off!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I feel the need to compensate for this post and find something more manly to do.

You’ve got to plan the exact right moment, find the perfect words to say and even pick out a nice ring!

Or, maybe you could just show them the image to the right. I’m sure any gamer would be flattered and honored by the nerdy proposal featuring Nintendo’s favorite pointy eared, tunic wearing adventurer.

Despite the adorable ring shown in the picture, I’m sure that won’t be enough.

I’m what they call a pack rat. I don’t necessarily collect things like an obsessive card, comic, or action figure enthusiast might, but if something rare or special comes my way, I’ll probably stash it somewhere and hold on to it. In extreme cases, I might go out of my way to obtain something… but more often than not I decide that if I didn’t purchase something when it first came out or if I don’t have it already, it’s not worth paying for.

Enter this display unit. The only reason I didn’t gun for this? Money. …and the fact that I didn’t know about the auction. But mostly money. However, in this case it’s not that I wouldn’t pay money for a R.O.B. Display Unit in its original Nintendo box that supposedly was never used at retail… it’s that I don’t have $4,150 in the first place.

The last few weeks, we’ve seen some stellar releases for the Wii and DSi Shop Channels. This week is no exception, with the much anticipated release of Cave Story. The game, originally released on PC back in 2004, looks like it was initially developed as an NES title.

Your story begins as you wake up in a cave, with no memory of who you are or why you’re there. You’ll continue on a side-scrolling adventure as you find that the cave’s creatures, Mimiga, are in danger. Abuse! I cry video game abuse. This is only acceptable when its a sh!tty game. So unless they put a Super Mario Bros 2 sticker over a copy of Shaq Fu, then I completely disapprove.

This 500 GB affront to all that is holy costs a whopping $150. The clocks are $20. The heartache, however, is free.

I love the idea of having a password locked flash drive. However, its entirely too grown up for me. My files consist of animated gifs of cats injuring themselves, or photos of naked celebrities.  I’m not Ethan Hunt or Doogie Howser. I don’t own the Sword Of A Thousand Truths. I just don’t have anything worth protecting.

But this is a fun spin on a common project nonetheless. You can find dozens if not hundreds of flash drives constructed from old gaming gear, but one that’s password protected by the Konami Code? You my friend might have just won the Internet.

I’m not too clear on the finer points of console modding (so far as I can tell it involves destroying classic consoles and cartridges for your own amusement. Abuse!) but this is impressive nonetheless. Another would-be Ben Heck has delicately ripped out the guts of an NES cartridge and shoved the necessary components (in this case, a Chinese-made media player) in to create a new yet retro portable gaming experience. Its very “now-tro”, if you will.

3 game cases and 2 controllers were maimed in the making of this veritable Nintendo Frankenstein, so its up for sale to recoup the losses. Hit the jump for a picture of its innards.
