Looks like Max Weinberg wasn’t the only treasure from Conan O’ Brien’s The Tonight Show to not make the transition to cable television. Conan premiered Monday night on TBS, but as many-a-gamer noticed, his Super Mario monologue backdrop wasn’t brought along for the ride.

It’s a shame we only got to see that awesome set piece used for the few months CoCo took up the hosting duties during the NBC 11:30pm time slot. I can only assume Jay Leno had the whole thing burned in the parking lot after Conan’s last show.

Gamers should absolutely love Jimmy Fallon. The SNL alum and host of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon has been a long time video game player and supporter. All this week, he’s been showing off some of the hottest new video games, including a go with Microsoft’s Kinect, and a look at Treyarch’s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops. Last night, Fallon showed off a demo of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

UPDATE: It’s just been announced that Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime will be at Late Night to show Donkey Kong Country Returns to Jimmy and viewers. How awesome is that? I’ll definitely be tuned in for all the antics.

For those who weren’t able to catch last night’s episode of The Tonight Show, Dhani Harrison came on for a quick bit to talk about how The Beatles: Rock Band came about. Of course, nothing here is really news to us, but seeing as Conan himself isn’t new to being immersed in video game worlds, it’s worth checking out his new band rocking out to “Birthday” …right after he tries to snag himself a free Beatles box set.

I guess I can post this now… it’s not my video, so I’m not worried about putting it up. Like I mentioned before, Conan went ahead and addressed the suggestion that his backdrop was influenced by Super Mario Bros. My favorite part is the bit about LaBamba, and Conan’s ironic advise that LaBamba should “sue the Super Mario Bros. people.” Classic.

Hey all, just saw a preview for the June 5th episode of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and judging from the fact that Conan was walking in front of his backdrop with the above art superimposed, I’m guessing he’ll be addressing the “coincidence.” I’ll be taping the bit, but unless NBC actually posts a video of the monologue, I doubt I’ll be able to post it… NBC’s picky about their shows getting posted online. I suggest you check it out at 11:35ET on NBC!

EDIT: Came on about 10 minutes in. The Tonight Show animated the entire background, Conan hopped a few times to Mario’s jumping sound, and then Conan made fun of LaBamba for looking like he came out of Super Mario Bros. Conan suggested LaBamba “sue the Super Mario Bros. people” for stealing his image. Ironic?

In case you missed it, some viewers of The Tonight Show noticed a little bit of Nintendo influence in the backdrop of Conan O’Brien’s set. Someone told Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, to get his reaction.

“That’s great. We know that he is a fan of what we do, and we’re thrilled to have him as a passionate Nintendo fan. Maybe we’ll have to go play some Wii Sports Resort as well.”

What? Reggie’s not going to kick his ass and take his name for arguable copyright infringement?

“No. For Conan, we’ll let that one slide.”
