Namco Bandai has released the official E3 trailer for SoulCalibur V, coming next year and set 17 years after IV. We get a decent look at Patroklos and Pyrrha — the son and daughter of Sophitia — among others.

SOOOUUUULLLL CAAAALIBUUURR…5! There are few details on this so far, but it’s worth noting all the same. Namco Bandai’s Level Up press conference has revealed several new games in development, most notably Soul Calibur V. Said to take place 17 years after Soul Calibur IV, the focus will be on the son of Sophitia, Patroklos. We’re also promised the return of character creation and an expanded online mode, as well as new characters (dur).

Namco’s Daishi Odashima opened a new Twitter account yesterday, tweeting on Christmas day that “SC is back! Get ready, fans!”

“SC” isn’t Santa Claus, or at least not in this instance. It’s not Scott Calvin, either. SC refers to Soul Calibur, which of course currently dominates Odashima’s Twitter page (as well as his Twitter name). Fans have been demanding SCV, and producer of Namco’s Tekken series Katsuhiro Harada hasn’t hesitated to encourage fans to voice their desire for a new Soul Calibur game. In a tweet from his own account yesterday, he re-confirmed the new Soul Calibur with Odashima as game director.

Included with the tweet was the above picture, clearly showing off Odashima’s drawing of a SC sword and his awesome fashion sense.

Following the confirmation that the latest entry into the famed Namco Bandai franchise will be entitled Tales of Xillia, the official site revealed the above trailer as well some new information.

It seems ToS: Dawn of the New World director Asana Inoki and Tales of Symphonia/Abyss director Naoto Miyadera are co-directing the game (they’re just doubling up on everything, aren’t they?), while Hideo Baba serves as producer. The game’s music will be scored by Motoi Sakuraba, with (as previously noted) a theme song performed by Ayumi Hamasaki. Animation will be done by Ufotable.

The Japanese-based Andriasang is translating the game’s genre as a “Steadfast Convictions RPG,” which hints at the game’s overarching theme.

The PlayStation 3 will be getting the newest Tales game, set for release in 2011. For the first time in the franchise’s history, the game centers on two lead characters: Shuto Matis as the male and Mira Maxwell as the female, created by veteran character designers Kosuke Fujishima and Mutsumi Inomata, respectively. Shuto is a medical student, while Mira is a master of the elemental spirits (earth, fire, wind, water, heart… go planet!).

The “Empress of Pop,” Ayumi Hamasaki, has been recruited to record the game’s theme song. More details soon!

What a banner weekend for Capcom, eh? They’re just making all kinds of announcements. Introducing Street Fighter X Tekken, the Street Fighter vs. Tekken mash up debuting on the XBOX 360 and PS3. Producer Yoshinori Ono, who was among those making the announcement at Capcom, said:

“This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”

This doesn’t come as entirely a surprise, as it was rumored that Capcom would be revealing two fighter games, one of which was thought to be a 2.5D Capcom vs. Namco game using the Street Fighter IV engine. So I guess we can consider that “confirmed”. And the other, a 3D Namco vs. Capcom fighting game using the Tekken 6 engine, is likely Tekken X Street Fighter, Namco’s version of the game, that was mentioned briefly during the Street Fighter X Tekken panel at Comic Con.

Street Fighter X Tekken is not due “for awhile” according to Capcom, so get your fix now with the trailer above and our gallery of screen shots and character art below.

You really have to hand it to Namco Bandai for once again reinventing the wheel. Pac-Man made his pellet-hungry debut 30 years ago, yet the company has created a brand new arcade title set to enhance the original game’s competitive qualities tenfold.

Pac-Man Battle Royale is a cocktail style arcade game that allows up to 4-players to compete head-to-head. Each player controls their own colored Pac-Man character, across familiar grid stages while eating all the pac-dot cookies you can. This time however, instead of trying to gobble up your blue ghost enemies for arcade supremacy, you’re now trying to eat your competitors.

Once you eat a power pellet, your Pac-Man character will grow in size, putting your opponents in the shoes of the franchise’s fearful ghost. Fleeing like mice, opponents must escape the super-sized Pac-Man, or else they’ll get eaten and lose the round. The only way to counter a giant Pac-Man is to gobble a power pellet yourself, or to eat a fruit piece. This time around, eating fruit will change the layout of the puzzle board, likely saving you from an inconvenient demise (this is also achieved by eating all the pac-dots per stage). Simply put, the last man standing wins all.

During my time playing the game, I was quite impressed by just how addictive Battle Royale became. Players are all huddled around the same screen, each controlling their Pac-Man character across a shared screen. The pressure was on, and the crowds were forming, something easily achieved due to the waist-high flat table.

If competition isn’t all you’re after, you can still try and gobble ghosts and pac-dot cookies as part of a personal points game, but I was focused on crushing my competitors. After the end of every round, a winner is decided, with an ultimate winner chosen at the end. Ultimately, I came in second. Each of the four players are then given a title based on in-game achievements, such eating the most items.

Pac-Man Battle Royale is set to release this fall in arcade form, and hopefully in console form too. Regardless of whether or not an at-home version will release, I think Battle Royale could very well be the game to save arcades in America. Quote me, it’s that fun.

Saban Brands, the company behind Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, has confirmed that Namco Bandai will continue a new long-term deal to develop toy and video games based on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Saban has also made headlines today, after it has reacquired the Power Rangers property from owner Disney.

Saban’s new ownership includes the 17 previous seasons of the franchise’s TV episodes. Saban plans on partnering with Nickelodeon to bring 20 new episodes of Power Rangers to air next year, across Nickelodeon and Nicktoons channels. The 18th season of the show will feature a new cast, new look and different theme.

“Power Rangers is one of the world’s leading children’s entertainment properties and we are delighted to see its return,” said Haim Saban, chairman and chief executive officer, Saban Capital Group, Inc.

This marks the second major old school franchise Nickelodeon plans to air next year, as they’ve recently acquired the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

D3Publisher has announced their plans to bring the upcoming Universal 3D film Despicable Me to consoles. The movie, follows Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) a bad guy who isn’t really that bad. He wants to steal the moon and all, but it’s not like that’s a crime.

“Despicable Me: The Game feature all of the favorite characters and locations from the film and will immerse players in the Despicable Me universe by allowing them to relive their favorite movie moments and play in original adventures not seen in the film,” said Olivier Comte, VP of marketing, sales and publishing Namco Bandai. “Despicable Me: The Game for Wii, PlayStation 2 system and PSP system follows the movie storyline and expands the movie universe, while Despicable Me: The Game – Minion Mayhem for Nintendo DS is a unique storyline and an all new adventure for players to enjoy.”

The GameCube had some terrific titles in its twilight years, some of which have received the so-nicknamed “Wii-makes” in order to give the games a little bit more of a fighting chance for commercial success. The latest game to be getting this treatment is Namco Bandai’s Wii port of SD Gundam Gashapon Wars, originally released a year before the Wii launch and now being ported in Japan on June 24th for ¥3,990.

Just like the original, over 150 Mobile Suits (from all over the Gundam franchise) and over 40 battle fields will be available. You can play through single player mode, survival mode, mission mode, Kimama ni Dungeon mode, and/or four player battle.

It’s official: Namco Bandai will be releasing Mr. Driller: Drill Till You Drop to the DSiWare Shop this April. The game will feature 6 playable drillers, 40 different stages, mission and time attack modes, and new strategy based on the dual screen setup. No word on a specific date or price yet, but I’m sure you can live without that info for now. You can continue on if you want to check out some of the latest screens from the game or if you simply want to leave a comment… but please, keep the sex jokes to a minimum.

A set of two new gameplay trailers for the upcoming DS title Dragon Ball: Origins 2 have arrived for your viewing pleasure. From Namco Bandai, the title is the follow up to the popular original DS game. Following series star Goku’s early years, you’ll set out on a mission to collect the seven enchanted Dragon Balls.

Throughout your journey, you’ll be able to play as characters Krillin, Bulma and Yamcha, each with their own unique abilities and power-ups. On your journey, you’ll have to solve puzzles, defeat enemies and find treasure chests. From the two trailers, you’ll likely note a few gameplay similarities to The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.

Origins 2 also features a co-op multiplayer mode, where teaming up will unlock exclusive boss fights and other multiplayer stages. Dragon Ball: Origins 2 will release this summer.

Although last week’s Game Developer’s Conference definitely overtook media headlines, those at the Las Vegas Convention Center were able to take in all the excitement at this year’s Amusement Expo. The expo allowed exhibitors to showcase some of their upcoming titles and innovative products to the attendees.

This year, Namco Bandai was on hand to demo their latest Pac-Man title, Pac-Man Battle Royale. The game celebrates the 30th anniversary of the franchise, and will offer fans a more competitive experience. Despite a teaser trailer, not many have seen the game in action, until last week’s expo.

The folks over at Arcade Heroes got their hands-on some gameplay footage of the game being run in an school bird’s eye view arcade cabinet. Aside from the blatant similarities to nearly every Pac-Man title ever released, the footage does show off some impressive new competitive elements, including eating other Pac-Man characters. The game is scheduled for an arcade release later this year.
