Two killer special editions coming to Mortal Kombat

Tremble, mere mortals, at the sight of the epic bonuses included with the Mortal Kombat pre-order.The Kollector’s Edition comes with an art book, a Scorpion/Sub-Zero figure, and a downloadable “classic” costume and Mortal Kombat avatars. Also available will be the the Tournament Edition, which comes with a fight stick, the above DLC, to be released in the limited quantity of 20,000 copies.

While we’re at it, don’t forget the pre-order bonuses, which include the classic Scorpion skin and original fatality from Gamestop, Sub-Zero skin and fatality from Best Buy, and Reptile skin and fatality from Amazon.

Mortal Kombat is expected on PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime April 2011.

Kratos confirmed as playable character in new Mortal Kombat

NetherRealm Studios is hard at work, putting the finishing touches on their upcoming title Mortal Kombat, a first step in revamping the franchise. Thanks to the upcoming January issue of Official PlayStation Magazine, a juicy mythological secret has been leaked ahead of schedule.

It appears Kratos of the God of War series will be a playable character in the new game. Although not included in the game’s main story mode, he will be selectable in traditional versus battles, coming with his own fatality, attack moves, and God of War themed stage. Naturally, his presence will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3 version of the game.

As long as Kombat doesn’t go overboard with the character cameos, I think this is great news for all — except Xbox 360 owners. Additionally, an error on the game’s official website leaked some previously unreleased roster information. Don’t bother searching for more secrets, as the website leak error has since been fixed. There were a few additional characters confirmed however, those are included below the break.

Mortal Kombat kills it with a new trailer

This news is particularly exciting for me. Not only because I think new Mortal Kombat game looks awesome, but also ’cause it gives me a chance to post those Gamescom screen shots that got left behind when I went on vacation last week. Whoops! I will say though that while it’s exciting to see a theatrical trailer, thus underscoring the approaching 2011 release date, this video doesn’t show off much of the brilliant and vivid gameplay Pete Betcher and I were privy to at this year’s E3. Pity. For a better idea of what that looks like, don’t forget to view the screen shots below.

And is it just me, or does someone need to get spanked for that trailer music choice?

Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter happening, says MK producer

While the cast of Street Fighter has their combat itinerary pretty full right now, with starring in two console versions of SFIV, an upcoming 3DS port, battling against the Tatsunoko clan on Wii, and soon dominating for the third time against Marvel’s superstars. Oh, and then there’s the just announced Tekken X Street Fighter and Street Fighter X Tekken titles that should release next year. But if that wasn’t enough, could we expect the inevitable; a Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter title?

Hector Sanchez, producer for Warner Bros. and NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat, thinks the crossover title is definitely going to happen. When however, is another story. Sanchez claims the title’s creation would depend on how well people respond to the Tekken crossover. He also notes that Fatalities, something that always kept the franchise on the messier side compared to Capcom’s bloodless entries, could be hard to integrate with the Street Fighter universe. “I’m not sure Capcom would be happy with Scorpion ripping Ken’s head off,” said Sanchez. I wouldn’t be happy with that either.

Then, there’s the issue of whether or not Capcom even wants to jump into bed with their 90s competitor. While it’s clear Ryu and friends have won the popularity battle, I’m just not sure if these foes should ever meet.

E3 2010: First impressions Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat is back, returning with enough fatalities and new bloody kill screens to satiate any potential bloodlust for the rest of your natural born life. My fellow writer Pete Betcher and I screened the newly announced remake and got a first hand look up close at Mortal Kombat‘s return to 2D. While we didn’t get to play, we certainly got an eyeful, and an eyeful may have just been enough. The attacks and gore are as inventive as ever, with some visuals eliciting straight up gasps from our fellow viewers (like when Milleena viciously gnawed an opponents face open with her teeth. Yeah.) One particularly exciting move involved a dismembered body and heat seeking missiles. If there’s anything to take away from the entire experience, it’s that the new Mortal Kombat will be more creatively violent than ever before. Novice players may also take delight in knowing that Mortal Kombat‘s classic multi-button combos have been eliminated, with the creators going for a more simplistic combo style that will rely more on timing than memorizing a button sequence. A new power up bar at the bottom of the screen also unlocks improved combos as the match wears on. You’ll also find that levels are delightfully old school while providing a new high res twist. Nostalgia never looked so good.

Expect DLC fatalities and at least one DLC unlockable character in the future for this title, due on the XBOX 360 and PS3 in 2011. Check out the E3 trailer above.

Morbat Kombat returns with new game, same blood

A new installment in one of the world’s most brutally blood-filled fighting games is coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles next year. Mortal Kombat, developed by NetherRealm (the new name for original developer).

The game returns to its roots by offering a reinvented version of the 2D original. The infamous Fatality returns, along with a new graphics engine, new modes including the option for tag team in the new Co-op Arcade Mode, and a brand new extensive story mode. And of course, the brutally fun 1 vs. 1 mode returns.

“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”

Mortal Kombat promises to offer everything you loved about the original, with improvements down to the finest detail. Take a look at the game’s first trailer above, if you’re not afraid of a little violence.

Midway to sell Mortal Kombat franchise

Things haven’t been great for Midway. After being delisted by the New York Stock Exchange and filing for bankruptcy, they’re apparently open to the idea of selling their most popular IP, Mortal Kombat.

Interestingly, the news comes in the form of a plan for an employee incentive program to reward employees for helping the company meet certain goals. Two of the three goals involve selling off the Mortal Kombat franchise:

Milestone: Either (i) execution of an asset purchase agreement for the sale of Midway’s Mortal Kombat franchise assets or (ii) submission by Midway of a plan of reorganization to continue as a going concern.

Milestone: The earlier to occur of (i) confirmation of a plan of reorganization or liquidation or (ii) closing of a sale of Midway’s Mortal Kombat franchise assets.

To the average gamer, it sounds a lot like selling your house to buy food. We’ll see how this works out for Midway.
