Looks like our favorite space heroine has arrived in NYC! These display photos, depicting Metroid protagonist Samus Aran’s slick and distinctive spacecraft, were taken at the Nintendo World Store, located in New York City. Such a fine recreation of an iconic ship surely deserves a place in your display cabinet. May I suggest right between the Starship Enterprise and Millennium Falcon models? Make it yours for $250.

Friday Night Concerts: Other M Piano Solo

I’m sure a number of you are just itching to get your hands onto Metroid: Other M this Tuesday. One aspect of the game I’ve pleasantly been surprised with so far is the game’s promotional music, much of which should be expected to appear somewhere in the actual game. This particular piano solo came straight from the official Metroid: Other M website, back when it was just a teaser site. I remember just opening a browser tab to the page and letting the music loop in the background as I went about my work – it’s that beautiful.

It’s not that long of a piano solo, and the melody actually just looped on the website, but hopefully you’ll enjoy this particular performance of it!

This trailer is especially exciting for Metroid fans of old, if I do say so myself. It also covers a lot of ground in Metroid history as sort of a catch-up for would-be new fans, (classic Nintendo move). Below you’ll find new screen shots and art, including both scenery and pictures of the madame in metal, released especially for this week’s Gamescom, as well as one recent gameplay trailer we missed.

Metroid turns up in Starcraft 2

Playing through the secret mission of Starcraft 2 earlier today, I stumbled upon one of my favorite easter eggs in quite some time. In order to keep spoilers to a minimum, just know that the secret mission takes place on a laboratory is space, and if you have a lab in space, its pretty obvious that you’re going to need some oversized glass tubes to fill will all sorts of creepy creatures. There are several fun secrets hidden in the level and even more throughout the game, but there was only one had me trying to switch to my Ice Beam. Naturally, one of the aforementionded glass tubes was populated by a lone SR388 native. Can you imagine how scary a Metroid/Queen of Blades combo would be? I don’t care if Tassadar has 50 Carriers to fly into it, there would be no containing the terror. Click over if you want to track down little guy for yourself.

First, you need to unlock the secret mission, if you don’t know how I suggest getting on your google machine and checking it out. Don’t worry, I’ll wait. Once you have that figured out, play through the mission as usual, until you come to the room with the Brutalisk. I would suggest beating the pulp out of him first, so you can have all the tasty easter eggs to yourself. Once you’ve done that, go towards the exit at the top of the room, but don’t leave. To your immediate right, there should be a series of tubes on the floor, and the closest one to you may or may not be exposed yet. If it is, you must have accidentally activated it already, and if not simply walk towards it to see it spring to life, and push the specimen into the lime light. Tada! Samus would be proud. Now all you have to do is liberate the little guy, have it mistake you for it’s mother, and wait for it to save you during the biggest battle of them all. Man, I want to play Other M… Right. Now.

Not gonna lie. When I saw this three seconds ago, I GOL’d. Gasped out loud. The only reason I wouldn’t sell my own eyeballs for this is because, well, I need them to play. I’d sell my mom’s eyes, though. Not like she needs ‘em. She’s only a banker.

That is to say, I’d do anything for a Metroid-themed Wii Remote plate featuring artwork from the game. Since the pre-order is from Play, I’m guessing this is only for the UK, possibly the EU region. Thumbs up: video game characters in tacks

Wow these sure stick out like a sore thumb. But not in a bad way! Artist and actual sore thumb have-r Bobert made these sleek looking blue and gray pixel panels out of silver thumb tacks colored with Sharpie markers. Reminds me of another amazing “tack-y” pixel piece we’ve featured here at The Tanooki!

Zero Suit Samus in Other M? That’s up to fans

With Metroid: Other M on the horizon, you’d think the development of the title would be near completion. However, there is one aspect of the game that, while not yet included, could get added based on fan reaction.

Yoshio Sakamoto was asked by Nintendo Power is Zero Suit Samus would appear in Other M:

It’s a little hard to say right now, but if it’s something people want, then there may be the possibility for that.

Sounds like an “oh, crap, we forgot to add that” moment to me! Would you guys like to see Zero Suit Samus return for Metroid‘s next Wii adventure, or is the notion of a Team Ninja developed Metroid enough excitement already.

Jake Gyllenhaal lays out his gaming background

Jake Gyllenhaal is starring as Prince Dastan in Disney’s film adaptation of Prince of Persia, an honor that may be causing gamers to question whether or not he knows the Prince character, and gaming in general. While he may not consider himself a core gamer in the modern sense, he definitely has the old school background. Here’s what he had to say in an interview with Geeksugar.

“I have played [the original Prince of Persia], but I’m not a gamer in general. I definitely have had my fun on the Wii. Being an actor you have a lot of time on your hands in between set-ups and things so there’s always the opportunity on set. A portable gaming device is always fun. I played a lot of video games when I was a kid. I really loved Metroid when I was a kid. I played that game all the time. Zelda was super dope and it may have been one of my favorites only because the casing was gold. I’m not really sure actually if it was the journey of it or that the casing was gold but I loved that game, and traditional things like the classic Super Mario Bros. and Mike Tyson’s Punchout.”

“Super dope?” Sure, why not.

Sakamoto talks Other M’s purpose, Prime’s interpretation

Metroid‘s Yoshio Sakamoto explained to Brian Crecente that Metroid: Other M will have a significant role in the franchise. Up until now, each Metroid game has had its major events, and this game will attempt to explain what it collectively means for our heroine.

“You are going to see a lot further development all of which is connected to this progression you see in the Samus character in the past. So you get to learn what kind of person she is and how she is connected to the events in her past and how they have made her the person she is in the present moment… You saw in the original Metroid series titles and then through Prime there were different glimpses of the Samus character, but this is our best opportunity to date to present everything all together about Samus, to give the definitive character sketch and that is going to be something people can draw from as a resource as we pull them into the Metroid universe in the future as well.”

In addition to discussing Other M, Sakamoto, co-creator of the franchise, explained that the Metroid Prime series developed by Retro Studios is simply another interpretation of Samus and the Metroid universe by different creators, and shouldn’t be considered non-canon nor should that series expect a reboot.

Samus, Allen Hampton blow up Kraid in Metroid Mural

You’ve gotta check this out. I’ve very picky when it comes to posting fan art because, well, most of it isn’t that great. Sure, it’s a form of admiration for the great video games out there, and it’s the thought that counts. But every so often, a piece of fan art pops up somewhere in the world that’s actually worth showing to others.

Allen Hampton, an artist from Tampa Bay, does all kinds of work from sculptures, to drawing, to aerosol paintings, and more. The beauty you see above is a 9′x30′ mural on the side of the Central Art Supply building out in St. Petersburg. Not only that, but it was done entirely using aerosol paints. Anyone want a custom-made Zero Suit worth $650?

Now, when I say “worth $650,” I don’t necessarily mean it’ll cost you that much. That’s the beauty of eBay. This latex Zero Suit, originally designed for a fan-made video, is currently going for a mere $50 on auction. That’s a steal for cosplay done this well. It’s got built-in gloves, boots in a women’s size 8, and a guarantee of all-eyes-on-you if you ever decide to wear it.

You can check out the auction link to see some shots of the suit, the original plans, and even some video of a women modeling the suit while doing her Wii Fit rowing squats. …because this is obviously the most practical outfit to do rowing squats in.

Nintendo “not done” with Metroid, possible DS title in the future

If you thought the Metroid Prime Trilogy and next year’s Other M were the graceful bow of Samus’ final performance, well, you were wrong! Says Metroid’s main man Kensuke Tanabe to Official Nintendo Magazine:

“We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi.”

So, are you looking forward to another Metroid Prime installment…or is the series getting tired? Should they end it on a high note or simply wait for the interest to die? Is it better to burn out than to fade away?

Minimal work, maximum effect: Video game minimalism

Minimalist interpretations of our most favorite and beloved geek icons have been all the rage on the ‘Net lately, and these images made by InfiniteContinues are my favorite example. Inspired by a recent set of Star Wars minimalist posters (you may have seen ‘em), the artist set out to create a bare bones portrait of various video game characters, from Samus Aran to T-Hawk.

Which is your favorite? Which would you like to see? I’m a big fan of the Samus Aran one but I’d love to see a print inspired by Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, or Final Fantasy. Or Pac Man, even. Just a yellow piece of paper with a line through it.

I actually had quite a bit of discussion at work yesterday about the Metroid series. One of the kids at the high school I work at was wearing a hat that looked like a Metroid, and one of my co-workers started talking about the “JUSTIN BAILEY” code and how the original Metroid for the NES was the best game of the series. When asked what other Metroid games he’d played, he said that was as far as he got.

Oh sure its all fun and games til someone gets their brains sucked right outta their skull.

All kidding aside, these Metroid plushes are adorable. Deceptively adorable, even. If they were that cute in the game (and Samus didn’t have the stone cold heart of a killer, which she totally does), the Galactic Federation woulda been screwed.
