Capcom cancels Mega Man Legends 3

This should come as a sore disappointment to many across the Mega Man universe. Today, Capcom announced via blog post that they are officially cancelling the epic project Mega Man Legends 3. Apparently the title failed to meet necessary criteria to continue production, and as such, both the game and prototype will be abandoned. Driven by fan content and exciting many with the promised demo, Mega Man Legends 3 was one of the rarer bright spots in the Capcom community as of late, perhaps even contributing to 3DS sales in anticipation. While this is the second Mega Man title to be canceled this year, Capcom promises they are still dedicated to the series, saying they’ll “continue to pursue opportunities to create new titles”, however, the fan created content will not be used in any future games, and previous content winners will receive a gift in the mail for their participation.

Mega sads.

Capcom-Unity member WhiteX spent five hours under the needle to get this tribute to the bomber in blue meticulously stabbed into his arm. Five hours! Sounds almost as painful as five hours of Mega Man itself.

Mega Man blasts his way into a comic book this April

I don’t care that they’re not in canon with the games, I loved the Sonic SatAM cartoon series and the resulting comic series from Archie Comics. I haven’t kept up with the series in a few years, but I’ve got almost every issue, mini-series, and special issue from the series’ beginning through shortly after the 100th regular issue. I loved the art, I love the stories, and I loved the characters. That’s how well a job they did with it.

Archie Comics looks to be launching their Mega Man comic series as soon as this April, according to a teaser image shown above (click the image to see the full picture), based on the 1st issue’s cover. I think it’s time for me to start getting into comics again.

When the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future visited Scrooge, their purpose was to help him gain perspective and to essentially save his soul. These aren’t those ghosts, though. This isn’t Scrooge, either — it’s Mega Man.

Sprites INC has put together a little holiday entertainment for you in the form of A Mega Man Christmas Carol, a playable Flash game in which Jacob Marley and the trio of Christmas spirits are actually Robot Masters, all under the direction of Dr. Light as Santa… or at least someone who resembles like Santa. You’ve displeased him this year, so he sends the spirits after you. No levels, just boss battles. A fun way to end the holiday weekend, right?

England promoting safe sex, in 8-bit form

Kids these days just don’t listen to anything their parents and teachers try to tell them, especially when it comes to sex. Although a slide shows of sexually transmitted diseases was enough for me to listen, some young whippersnappers just don’t understand the risks. The folks at the Leicestershire Teenage Pregnancy Partnership are trying to change that.

The UK based safe sex advocacy group created the above disease prevention video, inspired by the 8-bit games of old, or Mega Man more specifically. Maybe the Leicestershire group is on to something. After all, if 8-bit characters are telling me to use a condom, you best believe I’m going to!

Zero and She-Hulk join Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 roster

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve heard any new character additions to the growing roster of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. In steps Capcom, announcing two new players, one from each universe.

From team-Capcom comes Zero of Mega Man fame. From team-Marvel comes She-Hulk of being green fame. Two worthy opponents if you ask me.

Keiji Inafune leaving Capcom this month

After 23 years working for Capcom, Keiji Inafune has decided to leave the company. Citing a lack of willpower and a need to recharge, Inafune has decided to step down at the end of the month to pursue other opportunities. Inafune is best known for the creation of the character Mega Man.

“I’m leaving Capcom with the intention of starting my life over”, said Inafune. What that means exactly is unclear.

Inagune serves as the head of Research and Development Management Group, Consumers Games Research & Development Division, and Contents Management Division for the company. Leaving Capcom means he will no longer be assisting in the development of Mega Man Legends 3 for the Nintendo 3DS, a project he was quite passionate about.

Mega Man Universe gets character and stage customization

Capcom is rolling out the details for Keiji Inafune’s upcoming much anticipated game Mega Man Universe. First, we learned that three versions of Mega Man would be playable (Rock Man, a newly updated Mega Man and Bad Boxart Mega Man) along with other Capcom superstars like Ryu. Now we’ve found out that customization is going to play a large part of the Universe experience.

Players will be able to take part in an expansive character customization mode. Pick different colors for each part of your outfit, and choose your own parts to change your abilities. You’ll also be able to create your own levels in the Stage Creation mode. Edit your enemies, platforms, you name it.

Here are a few pictures of the new modes in action. Isn’t this game looking better and better everyday? I’m hoping I can dress Bad Boxart Mega Man in a pink flowered sundress, but he deserves nothing but utter humiliation for the rest of his life.

We now know what Mega Man Universe is!

Since it was announced in July, Capcom has been pretty silent as to what we should expect from their upcoming title Mega Man Universe. After a teaser trailer — embedded after the break below — showing some of the company’s characters in a crossover battle, we have finally been given a real gameplay trailer to sink our teeth into.

As you can tell from the video above, the game is a brand new sidescrolling Mega Man title. Ditching the 8-bit, the blue bomber is featured as a 3D drawn figure that will navigate through expansive worlds with familiar foes. The trailer also confirms why we saw some other notable Capcom characters in the teaser trailer. It’s because they are all (likely) in this game as well! The new trailer confirms Ryu as a playable character, which makes Mega Man Universe sound like a very attractive offering.

Korean MMO Mega Man Online gets animation trailer

Although not the gameplay footage that fans have been dying to see, Capcom was kind enough to release this new animation trailer for Mega Man Online. The upcoming game is an MMO, set for release in South Korea.

Aside from the truly kickass soundtrack, you’ll notice a lot of familiar faces. At one point, the Blue Bomber is faced with a league of past bosses, including one of my personal favorites Cut Man. Can Mega Man save the day? Find out in the trailer above.

Mega Man Online announced for South Korea

This is simultaneously the best and worst news I’ve heard in my life. It’s the berst. Mega Man Online has been officially announced by Capcom Japan…for South Korea. In an interview with Nikkei Trendy, Capcom Japan’s COO, Haruhiro Tsujimoto remarked:

First, it will be launched in South Korea. From there, it’s necessary to think about the development in Taiwan and China. Moreover, there are a great deal of Rockman fans in Japan as well. Though there are no plans currently, if Japanese gamers show interest in the game, the possibility to release it here exists.

I’m baffled. I had no idea that South Korea had such a Mega Man following that they would be considered for a Mega Man online game before Japan. To be honest, I don’t see how it could NOT come to Japan. Or the US, for that matter. Oh please, oh please, let it come to the US.

Mega Man, mini-minimalism

These adorable Robot Master avatars are dubbed “mini minimalism” by their creator, the London based graphics artist known as Infinite Continues. We’ve featured his video game minimalism designs here at The Tanooki before, some of which went on to be iPhone skin pre-order bonuses for Super Street Fighter IV in Europe.

I’ve always loved that combination of simple, clean aesthetics and bright colors that his work entails. Two games down, eight to go! Let’s hope he gets to them all!
