Sackboy to Move in LittleBig spin-off, arriving December

Media Molecule has something to whet our appetites, that should satisfy us all until LittleBigPlanet 2′s arrival in January 2011. Introducing Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves, a spin-off of sorts that will, you guessed it, be PlayStation Move focused.

Basically, the game is like an add-on pack of prehistoric levels that require the PlayStation Move controller. And since LBP 2 supports Move, it makes all the sense in the world to get this gem out prior to its release. Oh, and did I mention it comes free with every copy of LBP 2? Well, that part seems counter-intuitive, but I’d be a fool to complain.

Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves will arrive December 7 for free, exclusively for PlayStation Plus members, and open to the public December 14 for $5.99.

The Creatinator maximizes creation in LittleBigPlanet 2

January 18 doesn’t only bring the release of Sackboy’s next adventure, LittleBigPlanet 2 to the PlayStation 3, players will also receive “The Creatinator!”

When Media Molecule unleashes the sequel, players will have access to an incredible amount of content on day one. But for those of us that like the cream-filled center of the game’s “Play.Create.Share” mantra, the Creatinator will deliver an unprecedented amount of newness. The Creatinator is actually a device, specifically a stylish helmet donned by one’s Sackboy. With it you can create (and destroy) anything you so desire.

Sackboy on sabbatical as LittleBig sequel delayed ’til 2011

Looks like you’ll have to wait a few more months before you Play, Create and Share. Media Molecule has announced their upcoming adventure LittleBigPlanet 2 for PS3 will be delayed until 2011.

The game was set to release later this year, but will get the boot off the 2010 calendar, opting for a January debut instead. A brand new adventure unfolds with new levels, new costumes and new in-game elements at your disposal. You can also create your own genre of mini-games within LBP 2, inserting Sackboy in a anything from a racer to a shooter. Basically, you name it, it’s possible.

Although it would have been a great title to play this holiday season, the extra development time for polishing is always worth it in the end.

Media Molecule animator doodles grown-up Sackboy, Sackgirl

I could argue that Sackboy is easily the most universally appealing and incredibly adorable video game character developed in the last few years. His iconic short statured fabric-frame, button eyes and wide puppy-like smile make him more huggable than I normally like to admit. Err, at least, he was huggable.

Media Molecule’s Senior Animator Francis had a little fun sketching a very adult version of LittleBigPlanet‘s iconic boy and girl duo, as I dubbed them, Sackman and Sackwoman. And the result? Me-no-likey! Take a look above, and be afraid, be very afraid! Although drawn just for fun, he turned Sackboy into a body building version of Mr. Pringles. And well, Sackgirl is kind of sexy now, rocking a Jennifer Aniston bob circa Friends season 7.

But still, it all feels so wrong. So very, very wrong.

A LittleBig adventure trailer for LBP 2

While Media Molecule has focused its advertising thus far on the game within a game creation options for LittleBigPlanet 2, many just want to play the traditional story mode. And for those, I provide you the first real trailer of the game.

LittleBigPlanet 2 will come with over 50 creative levels with missions and obstacles set to run Sackboy through the mill. While roaming about Craft World, you’ll encounter the evilest of all villains, The Negativitron. He wants nothing more than to destroy your precious playground.

And this time around, there’s even more fun to be had, with the inclusion of grappling hooks, power gloves and AI Sackbots. All the fun starts when LBP2 launches exclusively on PS3 on November 16th.

LittleBigPlanet level in Limbo

If you’re like us, then you’ll really appreciate the above video clip. Limbo is a thrilling black and white downloadable XBLA exclusive. LittleBigPlanet, Media Molecule’s Sackboy playground, is a PlayStation 3 exclusive. So what happens when you combine the two? Sheer awesomeness.

As seen above, one dedicated LittleBigPlanet player wasn’t satisfied with the notion of having to use an Xbox 360 for their Limbo gaming. Instead, they created a full LBP level, inspired by the black and white game. As you can see, it pretty much looks identical to Playdead’s creation.

Nicely done, creator bra2008! If you want to try and play the level for yourself, it’s titled Limbo: Son of the Forest. Also be on the look out for a part 2, said to be out shortly.

LittleBigPlanet 2 release date and Collector’s Edition announced

Listen up, Sackboy devotees. The official PlayStation Blog has revealed some pertinent information about the upcoming LittleBigPlanet 2, more importantly the release date. On November 16th, players will be able to enjoy Sackboy in both the regular edition and the LittleBigPlanet 2: Collector’s Edition. So what perks does it offer, you ask?

For starters, the game (W00T!). You’ll also get a 7″ Sackboy plush doll, and more licensed costumers than you can shake a stick at. Between Disney’s Tron, Gonzo from The Muppets, that Alien dude from Toy Story, to PlayStation’s own Jak and Saxter.

Don’t fret however if you aren’t willing to drop the $79.99 for the limited time only Collector’s Edition. Depending on where you preorder the game, you’ll get a special costume pack free!

For GameStop preorders, you’ll receive Tron and the Even More Animals pack, from Best Buy you’ll receive the Toy Story Alien and the Even More Animals pack, and from Amazon you’ll receive Ratchet and Clank, plus the animal pack.

If you’re like me, your love of Sackboy isn’t just something you want restricted to a video game.

Toys R Us is selling a bunch of different Sackboy plush dolls, LittleBigPlanet‘s superstar, available for just $12.99.

And did I mention free shipping?!

You can choose from the original Sackboy and Sackgirl, or select a new themed costume including “Chop Chop” (as pictured), “Marvin,” and “Gloria.”

You may find these plush dolls elsewhere online, including Amazon, but this is the cheapest I’ve seen the LittleBigPlanet crew.

And purchasing yourself an adorable Sackboy plush doll may be the perfect way to kill time before LBP 2.

A LittleBig FAQ for LittleBigPlanet 2

There are some questions that fans start asking when a sequel to a popular title is announced. For LittleBigPlanet 2, there’s no exception, giving the wealth of content from the first title. Fans start to wonder, “will old costumes be featured?” or “is the game good?” or most importantly “will Sackboy grow a mustache?”

Sony took the time to answer a few questions, in neatly organized categories, in anticipation of LittleBigPlanet 2.

Backwards Compatibility

Are the LittleBigPlanet DLC costumes going to be compatible with LBP2?

Yes, any LBP 1 costumes purchased on the PlayStation Store will be compatible with LittleBigPlanet 2 – We can’t wait to see you what you guys do with the various costumes combined with the new cinematic tools!

I hope this is on a FAQ – are the first LBP and GOTY edition levels going to be included with LBP2?

The wonderfully fun LBP1 story levels will remain unique to its Blu-ray disc, but you’ll see familiar elements/tools/items as part of the foundation for LittleBigPlanet 2. And while the community levels will be unique to the GOTY edition – hopefully if you guys vote for us again, you’ll see something similar in the future…

Will any of the new costume DLC that will be released after LBP2 is released be compatable with the first game?

LittleBigPlanet 2 has been redesigned with a completely new graphics engine, so costumes and upcoming DLC designed for LittleBigPlanet 2 will not be compatible for LBP1 players.

Will all the costumes/stickers/decoration/DLC we collected in LBP1 be usable in LBP2?

We’re working hard to ensure that everything you’ve collected from LittleBigPlanet can be used in the new game. Certainly anything you’ve picked up from the PSN Store will be fully present and correct in LittleBigPlanet 2, the only time something might not quite work perfectly is if it has been created by another player using a ‘glitched’ object of some kind. Even then we’re optimistic that all of the existing content you’ve collected will continue to work.

DLC

Any idea when we’ll be getting that Sephiroth skin?

Nothing confirmed yet, but don’t worry we still have this in our plans…

Whatever happened to the Marvel Comics themed costume pack that was supposed to come out a year or so ago? I REALLY wanted a Wolverine Sackboy and it’s quite disheartening that something so cool was announced and shown and then never mentioned again.

We announced the partnership at Comic-Con last year (but no release date). It takes a bit of production time to get everything lined up, but hopefully you’ll hear some announcements soon.

Will LBP2 include from launch day all the DLC of LBP1? Including costumes level packs and all that good stuff?

Because of the backwards compatibility for LBP1 DLC, all the costumes on the PlayStation Store will still be available for purchase. Expect to see a ton more content in the next few months, including the eventual LittleBigPlanet 2 DLC.

Future Tech

Will it be in 720p or 1080p?

LittleBigPlanet 2 is getting a completely new graphical overhaul, so stay tuned for a future LittleBigPlanet 2 post, where we’ll cover off on more specifics like this.

PLAY elements

Sackboy, no matter what costumes he wears still looks like Sackboy in LBP1, seeing the new costumes in LBP2 has this idea been lost?

Some of the new costumes we’ve shown for LittleBigPlanet 2 are certainly unconventional, but then Sackboy has an eclectic wardrobe taste. At the end of the day however, he’s still Sackboy and we’ll be sticking close to making him look that way no matter what the costume.

Will Stephen Fry be narrating it again?

Yes, your (and our) favorite narrator will be back for LittleBigPlanet 2.

Will this game have the 50 levels single player like the first game or is this just a big create kit?

LittleBigPlanet 2 is a whole new game, so just like the original you get a full storyline for Sackboy to play thru. Add to that the endless possibilities of the evolved Create and Share modes, where you’ll see completely different gameplay experiences in the community levels.

CREATE tools

Can I electrify/set things on fire using switches and logic? What has happened to emitters in LBP2? Are they much easier to use? Has dissolve material changed? How many layers will there be and what different types?

Expect some lots more details about CREATE mode at this year’s E3.

Sackbots

Does Sackbot have to look like a robot or can I change his form to any creature?

Nope, Sackbots are totally customizable, from their reactions to their clothing/skins.

Just to double check, we’ll be able to have evil Sackboys as bad guys?

There’s no such thing as an evil Sackboy – just some mischievious ones…Sackbots, on the other hand, can have a mind of their own.

Can you program Sackbots to activate swithces? *Example* giving them jobs on a pirate ship.

I just saw the LBP2 box art pop up on Twitter…Why didn’t you guys post it here?

Glad you noticed, but don’t get too attached to that piece of art – It’s something we put together from the artwork created for an exclusive EDGE Magazine cover article. And while we love it, its definitely NOT final box art.

Are you guys going to be at E3? I hope so, every gamer in the world needs to see LBP2!

Of course we’ll be at E3, the bigger question is…will you?

Will there be a Sackboy costume contest again?

I sure hope so, we had so many great entries last time. And now that we have more fans and more people familiar with what can be done, we can’t imagine how creative you guys can get. Stay tuned.

Before you put down your overused copies of LittleBigPlanet in anticipation of the recently announced LBP 2, you may want to devote even more time to the game’s coveted creation mode.

Apparently, gamer John Beech was so good at creating his own LittleBig levels, Media Molecule hired him. Now. Beech works as a Media Molecule Level Designer. Pretty cool, ey?

PS Home adding new LittleBigPlanet areas

Fresh off the heels of the announcement of LittleBigPlanet 2, Sony has announced that new spaces inspired by all things Sackboy are being added to PlayStation Home. The LittleBigPlanet PlayGround makes Home look like a theme park, adding familiar environments and characters from the game. The PlayGround also features new mini games for you to take part in, such as the King’s “Snap Happy” Photo Challenge. Take special photos and you may just receive some exclusive rewards. You can also shoot some moving targets at the LittleBigDerby.

My favorite new part of the LBP Home experience is the ability to create your own XMB wallpapers using the LBP Creator. Create your own work of art, or enlist the help of your friends to create fine backgrounds to share. You can also head off to the LittleBigPlanet Pod Penthouse, a replica of the game’s hub in cardboard form, and fully customizable.

Finally, there’s new furniture and avatar clothing to pimp out the animated you in clothes bound to make the real you pretty jealous.

The new content is set to launch on PS Home this Thursday, May 13th.

So what’s new about LittleBigPlanet 2?

Yesterday for the umpteenth time, we got confirmed of LittleBigPlanet 2, arriving at the end of this year on the PS3. While everyone is happy and excited for a sequel, fans want to know what they can expect when the title ships. So far, here’s what we know.

Media Molecule is making it their goal to provide gamers with an enhanced opportunity to PLAY, CREATE and SHARE. While playing the new game, gamers will first notice that LBP2 is being developed on a “revamped” graphics engine that will enhance the visuals from the previous game. MM will also bring a boat load of new storylines and new missions. The game will also support the PS Move, which will provide a whole new way to play.

The creation improvements are said to really be what sets this game apart from the previous title. Players will have access to new tools such as the ability to add a voice over to your own created character, and new equipment, such as a grappling hook, power gloves and a magic bag. And while before you could only create levels, now players can also create games. If you want to create a LittleBigPlanet racing adventure, you can. If you want to create a Sackboy Space Invaders game, you can. And of course, all your creations and friends’ creations are accessible to download. Sharing has never been simpler. And as we mentioned before, all 2 million of your created levels from the original game are accessible.

Pretty neat stuff, huh? With just one month before E3, we’re bound to get more information, videos and game impressions in the near future.

LittleBigPlanet 2, details and first trailer!

Media Molecule is proud to announce a sequel to the PS3′s introduction to a Sackboy universe, with LittleBigPlanet 2. The company even packaged a brand new trailer to show off the game in action.

The trailer boasts that over 2 million levels have been created on the first title. All those user created levels return, but now there’s a whole lot more to explore with the sequel. More levels, more customization modes, and different types of levels can be created. Instead of just creating a traditional platforming level, you can now chose your genre. Want to make a racer? Go for it. Want to try your hand at a Sackboy arcade shooter? No problem.

LittleBigPlanet 2 finally officially confirmed

First, there were reports that developers Media Molecule said a LittleBigPlanet sequel would be the “most counterproductive thing they could do.” Then Media Molecule was acquired by Sony, who likes money. Now, the upcoming issue of gaming mag Game Informer will be featuring LittleBigPlanet 2, which comes as the game’s first official announcement. Previously, the closest we got to the game’s confirmation was a musician who listed LBP2 on their online resume.

As one of the biggest stories for their June issue, Game Informer will have all the details for LBP2 in a “huge feature article.” Not much else is known at this time, but I’m guessing a huge wave of additions are expected on and offline.

If powdered wigs and wooden teeth are you’re cup of tea, then hold onto your under-roos. A recent contest held by website GeekAdelphia turned out a pretty cool user created LittleBigPlanet level, inspired by the great city of Philadelphia. “Great city” you ask? Well, sure it’s great. They do have that cracked bell thingy. Oh, and the cream cheese. They have the cream cheese!

The site wanted readers to create a level based on the Pennsylvania city, and the winner did just that. Chooch Schuburt from the Nation’s capitol included all the historic references you could imagine, including a large Ben Franklin and his many inventions.
