New Silent Hill: Downpour screen shots trickle down from E3 2011

I got a chance to play Silent Hill: Downpour for about twenty minutes during my booth tour at Konami, and I have to say, I’m every bit as much looking forward to this as I was before E3 2011. Which is a lot. The balance of action and puzzle solving as you teeter on the fence between reality and hell is as engaging and dynamic as ever. The combat however, more emphasized in Downpour than in previous titles, will still make you want to scratch your own eyes out. Check out screen shots below.

Old school meets new when Symphony of the Night stage comes to Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

In January, Konami plans to release new stages for Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, featuring a blast from the past. Two levels will be available for download, one based on an underground Castlevania: Symphony of the Night stage and another entitled Lord of the Flies, perhaps hinting at Beelezebub-ish things to come. Each will cost 320 Microsoft Points, a full dollar value less than previous Harmony of Despair DLC.

X-Men Arcade – Review

Arcade games and console/PC games are not the same. Aside from the obvious length differences, the penalty for losing is also very different. In PC and home console games, losing usually sends you back to a checkpoint or the beginning of the level. Years ago, the “Game Over” screen actually meant something, as you would be thrown back to the title screen to start over for losing all of your lives! It’s true!

Arcade games, however, don’t work this way. In arcade games, the penalty for failure is the loss of money. If you want to continue playing after dying, you’d better be willing to jam a few more coins into the slot. That’s fair enough, right? Arcade machines are expensive, and arcade owners have to make their money back somehow. Both of these philosophies are similar in that they encourage the player to improve and try their best not to lose.

When arcade games are ported to home consoles, necessary changes are usually made. Continues (credits) are limited, or continuing will send the player back to he beginning of the stage. There has to be some penalty, right? Well, not according to Backbone Entertainment, if the PSN version of the 1992 X-Men arcade game is anything to go by. This version is basically a straight port of the arcade version with a few bells and whistles thrown in. It keeps the arcade version’s credit feeding penalty system, but it doesn’t work. The credits aren’t real any more, so neither is the penalty.

One of the things that makes the X-Men themselves so interesting is the amount of diversity within the team. Among many others are a tiny feral Canadian, an African wind goddess, a Russian farmer made of metal, and a parapalegic telepath. It’s a shame that this game fails so badly at capturing that diversity. All of the characters play almost exactly alike. Everyone has a basic combo, an attack against downed enemies, and two aerial attacks. They all work the same way for each character. The speed, power, and range don’t vary at all. The only thing each character has that sets it apart from the others is their mutant power. Mutant powers are powerful attacks that can kill most enemies with one hit. Unforunately, even there, the only differences are the speed and field of effect of each power. Their strength is the same and they all drain the same amount of health to use. On top of all of that, the lack of a real penalty for death leaves the mutant power attacks incredibly overpowered. There’s no reason not to just spam them until you’re out of health, die, continue, and repeat the process until you reach the end. It’s boring, but it’s less boring than punching a hundred enemies ten or twenty times each. At least spamming mutant powers leaves some small impression of variety among the characters.

This new port adds a few new features. The awful Backbone smoothing filter is present and enabled by default. As always, it turns the sprites into hideous paint-by-number-looking messes. Thankfully, you can turn this filter off from the Options menu before you start playing. Unfortunately, the character portraits and menu screen are permanent victims of the smoothing filter and can’t be saved. One cool little feature is the ability to switch between the American and Japanese ROMs. The biggest difference is that the American ROM drains health for mutant powers before using mutant power items once you no longer have enough health to drain, while the Japanese ROM uses mutant power items first. The Japanese version also allows enemies to drop health and mutant power items, but those are very rare. The most significant addition to this port is online play — up to six people can play together online. Too bad the lag with as few as two players makes online play more of an annoyance than anything of any worth.

Really, there are only two reasons to play this game. The first is nostalgia. If you played the arcade version 18 years ago, playing this new version will probably make you feel like you’re watching an old cartoon or playing with an old toy. (My nostalgia for the early 90′s X-Men team didn’t help me enjoy this game, though, since they’re basically different skins for one generic character.) The second reason is the novelty of playing a six player beat-em-up offline on one console. Not a lot of games take advantage of the PS3′s ability to read more than four controllers at the same time. Any fewer than five players, though, and you’d probably be better off playing Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game, or any other PSN beat-em-up, since they all offer a lot more depth and value for your money than X-Men. This game has almost no replay value, can be finished in less than 30 minutes, and is so boring and repetitive that even that even those 30 minutes feel way too long.

Konami introduces “Boyfriend Lock” for Project Love Plus

When dating sim Project Love Plus arrives for Japanese 3DS players, it will come with a new feature that makes great use of the Nintendo 3DS’s front-facing camera. The game supports good enough facial recognition that the game will know when you’re playing the game… or when one of your friends tries to meet your virtual girlfriend when you aren’t looking.

The feature, dubbed a “Boyfriend Lock,” will allow the in-game girls to react to a face other than that of the game’s primary player with confusion and questions such as, “Who are you?” Konami says the Boyfriend Lock will give players a better bond with their virtual counterparts. All this makes you wonder what Sal9000 might think about these upgrades.

Konami’s Doctor Lautrec is not Professor Layton

Newly announced for the Nintendo 3DS is Konami’s Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights. The has been drawing attention primarily for the game’s resemblance to Level-5′s Professor Layton series in that the art styles are similar, the titles are similar, the main characters both sport top hats, and both apparently have a good amount of education.

In the new Doctor Lautrec game, he and his assistant Sophie go on an archaeologic adventure filled with exploration, action, and plenty of conversations along the way. We should be hearing more about the title soon, so hang tight — none of those artifacts are going anywhere!

Ninja Turtles pizza spoof brings back selfish memories

Anyone who’s played Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time knows that the life-replenishing pizzas are to be saved for those who truly need them. Of course, if your friends are anything like mine, they’re nothing but a bunch of selfish assclowns.

The folks at Dorkly just reached into my brain, and create a video that spoofs the source of countless childhood arguments I had with greedy pizza-loving neighbors. Take a look for yourself, and let me know if this was a common problem in your household.

DanceDanceRevolution partial setlist reveals Lady Gaga, Ke$ha

Konami is gearing up to release the next title in the DDR franchise, simply titled DanceDanceRevolution. Returning for Wii, and making a series debut on PlayStation 3, the game aims to add some spice to stale series by offering an impressive setlist of today’s hottest pop tracks. Do they succeed?

Below is the list of some of the 50 tracks included with the game. You’ve got your newer artists like Ke$ha and Lady Gaga, but it balances out with the return of Sean Paul, the herpes of the DDR franchise.

The greatest news is that all songs listed below are officially licensed tracks! Nothing worse than selecting “Oops!… I Did It Again” only to find out Britney’s been replaced by some unknown named Akira. Check them all out below and let us know what you think.

Wii would like to dance, dance, dance. And Konami is here to deliver, with a new Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii. This fresh iteration of the dance favorite features an all new Choreograph Mode, and the addition of routines solely for the upper body. The controls include Wii Remote and Nunchuk with MotionPlus support, the classic dance pad, and the Balance Board. It brings with it a soundtrack of over 30 hits, featuring everyone from Jason Mraz to Lady Antebellum.

Konami’s NeverDead trailer is keen on removable limbs

You’ll have to forgive us, as E3 can be a very hectic time. Regardless of how many staff members there are working to bring you guys everything that happens, there’s always an overlooked game trailer or two. Better late than never, right?

At E3 this year, Konami released a trailer for their upcoming survival horror shooter NeverDead. The game allows the immortal protagonist and his female partner, to venture on a mission of tormenting demons, all while getting his head blown off a few times. It’s quite amusing.

Check out some gameplay footage above to get a glimpse of all the action. NeverDead is planned for an upcoming Xbox 360 and PS3 release.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow gets October 5th release

Konami is set to release the next title within the Belmont family’s death defying adventures this fall. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is set for an October 5th release for the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles.

Play as Gabriel Belmont through 50 well designed 3D stages as he attempts to rid the world of the walking dead by combining the pieces of the powerful God Mask. While on your journey, you’ll encounter a diverse group of nearly 50 enemies and mind bending puzzles to keep you on your toes.

No More Heroes’ PS3 version gets Move support

Travis Touchdown may have excelled through the ranks of killers in his first two Wii installments, but Konami is set on bringing the No More Heroes adventures to Sony’s HD console. When the original No More Heroes ships on the PS3 under the subtitle Heroes’ Paradise, it will boast a few competitive differences.

First, the game graphically will get an HD overhaul over the Wii version. The wacky art style and pixelated on-screen actions will surely benefit from high definition. But all that jazz was in Asia’s exclusive Xbox 360 and PS3 version. So what is Konami going to bring to the table for the PS3 stateside release? Well Move, of course!

The game will fully support Sony’s upcoming motion controller, the PS Move. So as of now, you have a Wii version with motion controls, an Asia-only Xbox and PS3 version in HD without motion controls, and a PS3 version with motion controls and HD. Sounds like we have a winner.

The game will ship in 2011.

At long last, Dance Dance Revolution is coming to PS3

If you’ve been thirsting for all things DDR on your PS3 (me, I’m still rockin’ Supernova on my PS2 to ward off the pangs), at long last your wait is over. DanceDanceRevolution is finally coming to PS3, and it’s bringing the Move with it! Likely delayed until Sony could incorporate their (perfectly named) motion control, this new generation of the popular dance game also has a host of new features, including new game modes Dance Off and Club Mode, an increased difficulty level (!), improved graphics and recording features. And now, instead of merely using your feet, you’ll also have to use your hands, an option incorporated into the PS2 iterations but never fully realized. As for the music, there will be 25 new songs from Konami artists, as well as 20 hits from popular recording artists.

And like it’s PS3 brethern Kung-Fu Live, Playstation Eye compatibility will use video imaging to place you within the game on on-screen, which you can then use to record your dance and post it online.

Upping the ante following the press release from last week, Konami has released a trailer for tentatively-titled Silent Hill 8. In this new footage, which basically illustrates our earlier summary from the announcement a few weeks ago, you’ll see a lot of what makes Silent Hill so great; rich textures and carefully crafted atmosphere, spliced with the horrifying transition into supernatural chaos as reality shifts into hell, all told through the eyes of a fresh victim. Silent Hill 8 introduces us to Murphy Pendelton, a convict who gets stranded in Silent Hill after a prison transport vehicle careens off the side of the road. As with past titles, players will use improvised melee weapons and good ole fashioned fleeing as they battle the twisted monsters of the perpetually haunted town of horrors.

Horror survival series Silent Hill is returning to it’s 3rd person roots in this new installation of the series, due out in 2011. The game introduces us to Murphy Pendelton, a convict who gets stranded in Silent Hill after a prison transport vehicle careens off the side of the road. As with past titles, players will use improvised melee weapons and good ole fashioned fleeing as they battle the twisted monsters of the perpetually haunted town of horrors.

No much more is known, as even Silent Hill 8 is a mere working title. We’ll update you here as more details are released.

Konami announces eighth title in its terrifying Silent Hill series

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced it is to return to the mist-shrouded streets of Silent Hill (working title), as the eighth title in the series heads to PlayStation^®3 and the Xbox 360^® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

Scheduled for release in 2011, Silent Hill remains true to the franchise’s original roots, and again takes the form of a third-person horror experience. With an all-new thought-provoking storyline, players will once again find themselves face to face with their deepest sins and fears in the strange world of Silent Hill.

The new game begins after a prison transport vehicle careens off the road, leaving lone inmate Murphy Pendleton stranded in Silent Hill. As Pendleton takes in his new surroundings, users will encounter mind-bending puzzles and horrific creatures and otherworld terrors. Armed only with the everyday objects they can find – from wooden chairs to glass bottles – to fend off their enemies, fight or flight responses are left to the player as they unravel a dark, thought-provoking storyline which will appeal to fans of the early, classic Silent Hill series.

Silent Hill enjoys a wealth of new elements to create a deep, psychological horror experience. In addition to the main storyline, players will also be presented with variable side quests that will change depending on the user’s play style, revealing further unknown evils within the town.

Silent Hill (working title) will be available for PlayStation^®3 and Xbox 360 in 2011.

E3 2010: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow trailer

Here’s the latest trailer from Konami on the game meant to reboot the entire Castlevania series as we know it, the 3D Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Expect to see this action-adventure title on the XBOX 360 and PS3 sometime in fall 2010.
