It was a seemingly slow week all around, as the only new title in the Top 50 came in at #13 for the week, last week‘s #1 dropped to #7, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii managed to top the sales charts despite seeing a dip in sales compared to it’s #5 figures last week. All hardware saw declines or negligible change with the exception of a slight increase in Xbox 360 sales. Those hardware figures were as follows:

  • PSP: 29,766
  • PS3: 28,973
  • Wii: 25,345
  • DSi XL: 19,372
  • DSi: 13,378
  • DSL: 3,349
  • X360: 3,218
  • PSP Go!: 1,826
  • PS2: 1,425

]]> Time for the Media Crate update! It was an interesting week for Japanese sales, in more ways than one. For starters, only half of last week’s Top 10 stayed in the Top 10, as there were five new games in the Top 10 (including a new PS2 release), and seven new games in the Top 15. Of them, Etrian Odyssey III for the Nintendo DS led the way, moving 87,765 copies.

Despite the new releases, most platforms saw a decline in hardware sales totals. Even the DS saw a reduction in sales numbers, but in relation to other platforms, the Nintendo DS variations combined to top the hardware chart with 41,219 units sold. Here’s the entire chart split up for each individual platform:

  • PS3: 38,877
  • PSP: 37,445
  • Wii: 30,938
  • DSi XL: 21,583

]]> The sales figures from March 15-21 in Japan are coming in, though to say that Yakuza 4 topped the charts would be a major understatement. The new PS3 title moved almost 384,000 copies at retail, while the next best selling game sold closer to 91,000 copies.

Following it, Friend Collection maintained its status quo while New Super Mario Bros. Wii saw a dip in sales, but both managed to jump up in the charts. New releases included Bad Company 2, the latest Dynasty Warriors and Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! games, and even the PSP version of Chinatown Wars.

The sales numbers are in for Japan’s final week before the E3 news came out. I’m thinking we might see a spike in Xbox 360 hardware, even if the games don’t go with it, and expect Wii sales to drop maybe a little bit as those who would’ve bought a Wii might not next week, knowing a new color option is on the way. As for this week, everything was pretty consistent with the week before in terms of hardware.

At the same time, Japan’s been very receptive to Nintendo’s casually-targeted games (as Wii Fit‘s #8 ranking after the break shows). We’ve got Wii Sports: Resort on the horizon for the casuals, and Wii MotionPlus coming for the veterans. What I was speculating with my friend was that while non-standard peripherals usually have a hard time establishing a userbase, Wii Sports: Resort, like Wii Fit before it, should have the power to sell in Japan. If it doesn’t? Well… announce black Wii hardware at E3 and pack in Resort/MotionPlus. Nintendo would win the economy.

One fifth of a million in a week, huh? I guess that should quiet some of you DSi naysayers out there. Combined DS sales in Japan for the week ending Dec. 21st exceeded a quarter of a million, with the PSP and Wii also selling astoundingly well. Not bad at all.

Five systems benefited from the week’s sales of the top ten software titles, including Kirby Super Star Ultra and Pokemon Platinum for the DS, Dissidia: Final Fantasy for the PSP, and Gundam Musou 2 scattered all over the charts. The affected hardware sales numbers were as follows:

According to the latest sales data from Enterbrain, the Wii has sold 7,024,239 units from its December 2, 2006 launch through this past Sunday, November 23, 2008. Bumping it over the hill was mostly the work of Animal Crossing: City Folk, moving 303,204 copies itself this past week. Other data figures include a total of 24,127,175 Nintendo DS units (including the DS Lite and DSi) since the unit’s December 2004 launch, and 276,049 copies of Crono Trigger sold in the week ending November 23rd.

What does all that mean? It means that Nintendo will continue swimming in money for the forseeable future, and that we can almost bet on City Folk 2 in the Wii’s lifetime. Or maybe just Nintendogs-like promotion on the first City Folk for the next several years. Yeah, that’s it.

Whoa, I’ve REALLY been gone a while. Since when does the DS Lite outsell the PSP in Japan these days? Look back through some records, it looks like this is actually the first week in a long time Nintendo’s handheld outsold Sony’s, but that’s quite a revelation for me to come back to. Those Xbox 360 numbers, too. Sheesh.

On the software side, Tales of Vesperia is solely responsible for those 360 sales numbers. The DS was carried by the release of Fire Emblem: New Shadow Dragons and the Blade of Light on August 7th – meaning the Japanese had a whopping one day to play before dropping their handhelds to go watch the Olympics.

This week’s numbers make much more sense all around than Media Crate’s suspicious numbers last week. The DS managed to jump back into second place for sales in Japan during the week ending July 6th, but it came at the expense of the Wii dropping to #3.

Despite Initial D Extreme Stage‘s strong launch for the PS3, that platform actually saw the largest drop in sales for the week. The hardware sales were as follows.

  • PSP: 56,439 (-2,912)
  • DSL: 47,455 (+10,856)
  • Wii: 44,525 (+3,488)
  • PS3: 14,359 (-5,977)
  • PS2: 11,768 (+5,422)
  • X360: 4,776 (+2,221)

Hardware sales in Japan are getting closer to what we’ve become used to seeing these last few months. The DS and Wii got boosts compared to last week, thanks to games such as Band Brothers DX, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, and… Derby Stallion DS.

I might update this post in the near future if I get better info, but I’m a little skeptic about this week’s reports. Media Crate and Famitsu’s data for the week varies by a wide margin, especially in Wii and Tales of Symphonia sales. Media Crate even lists the Wii as in second place for the week despite reportedly selling less than the DS. So…yeah.

Even though some individuals hope that Snake’s latest offering can de-throne the Big-N as king of this generation, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.  While Sony managed to sell an impressive 139,494 PS3s for the month of June, it was no match for the 235,990 Wiis sold.  While Metal Gear made the sales gap smaller for both consoles, it looks like Sony will have to bring more to the table if they hope to topple Nintendo.

Nintendo’s closest rival in home platforms had the spotlight last week, but the Wii managed to pull ahead again last week. In software sales, Super Mario Stadium Family Baseball opened at #3, pulling in sales numbers of about 58,000 copies.
