ESRB mobile app gets game summaries via photo recognition

If you are or know a parent that’s been waiting until the last minute to buy some video games for the kids this holiday, there’s a chance you’re going to have to scramble to find what you’re looking for in the stores. Unlike online shops, brick & mortar stores don’t have full product summaries next to their items to help you decide whether or not it’s appropriate for your little ones.

Not to worry! The ESRB’s got your back.

The new mobile app allows you to simply take a photo of the game in question, enough to provide you with a full ratings summary of the game before you even leave the aisle. Nifty! All you need to do now is download the free app from Apple’s App Store or the Android Market, and head on out!

Free Street Fighter IV iPhone update adds Dee Jay and Sagat

Developer’s tend to neglect their games once released, especially after eight months on the market. Not Capcom, as the company has announced two additional fan favorites to join the growing list of fighters on the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV. The free update, available now, adds the Jamaican wonder Dee Jay, as well as series veteran Sagat.

Intially equipped with just eight players, the game has slowly crawled up to 14. Each character addition has been free, built-in to the price of the $9.99 game.

Glad to see Capcom is still supporting the game! And something tells me these won’t be the last character additions we see.

C. Viper and E. Honda join Street Fighter IV on iPhone

Capcom keeps offering free character updates to the iPhone/ iPod Touch version of Street Fighter IV. Isn’t that nice? We should thank them with hugs.

This week brings two new characters set to battle on the mobile version of the game; E. Honda and the stylish C. Viper (who may or may not be in Marvel vs. Capcom 3). Recently, new free character additions have included soviet Zangief and UK’s Cammy. Currently, the roster has increased to 12 fighters, with no sign of slowing down soon. Other new additions to the game include premium costumes for Ryu and Chun-Li.

C. Viper revealed as free download for Street Fighter IV on iPhone

It’s been confirmed that Capcom will be releasing C. Viper as an upcoming downloadable for Street Fighter IV on the iPhone. The new-ish Street Fighter siren will be joining the line-up of ten already on the iPhone iteration, but the date is as yet unknown. Oh, and did I not tell you the best part? Apple’s iPhone 4 releases nationwide

Lines began early this morning across the country, as Apple recently announced today as the release date of the newest iPhone 4 device. Eager Apple devotees lined up, wanting to get their hands on the sleeker, slimmer smartphone.

Apple added a ton of new features to the phone, including a 960 x 640 retina display, HD video recording, and the ability to multitask. A new video chat feature, titled FaceTime, has also been added.

In a week’s time, rumor has it Apple saw in the neighborhood of 600,000 preorders for the device. Likely, millions of devices will fly off store shelves, making Apple’s decision to enter the mobile phone market one of the most brilliant moves in recent history.

WWDC 2010: New iPhone 4 announced

Steve Jobs has just announced the latest new iPhone. The iPhone 4 features the most notable changes in appearance since the debut of the original iPhone.

Featuring a stainless steel body, the new iPhone is just 9.3mm thick, which is 24% thinner than the most current iPhones on the market. Additionally, there are over 100 new features, many of which aren’t going to be revealed today. The phone features a headphone jack and sleep/wake button. The phone is being powered by Apple’s A4 chip.

The iPhone 4′s battery will offer 7 hours of talk time, a 40% increase over the current model. The phone will over 300 hours in standby, with 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing and 6 hours of 3G browsing. The phone will offer 32GB of storage.

Jobs also talked about the phone’s new Retina Display, a 326 ppi display that features “really, really sharp text.” Jobs called the inclusion of the new screen a “biggie.” The phone uses IPS technology, which will offer users deep, rich color with an improved viewing angle.

UPDATE: iPhone 4 will offer Gyroscope. Gyroscope in addition to the accelerometer will offer 6 axis motion sensing. This will offer an extreme precision and improved rotation. Other new sensors include ambient light, proximity and compass. The phone’s new 5 megapixel camera will offer better pictures Jobs promises, with a backside illuminated sensor and 5x digital zoom. And records HD quality video, at 720p at 30 fps.

The phone also brings FaceTime, a new video chat feature! The iPhone 4 cost with 2 year contract is $199 for 16GB model and $299 for 32GB model. The phone is available in white and black, starting June 24th.

Mystery challenger approaching Street Fighter IV for iPhone

Capcom is teasing the release of a second free downloadable character for their popular iPhone version of Street Fighter IV. Recently players acquired Cammy as a special downloadable character, rounding out the lineup to a solid 9 players.

The 10th character will be announced on June 8th. In addition, Capcom is allowing fans to enter for a chance to win prizes, including 5 iPod Touch limited edition Street Fighter cases, and one limited edition iPod Touch. All you have to do is tweet who you think the new challenger is on Twitter, followed by the hashtag #sf4i1006. The contest results will be announced on June 18th.

Sonic 4 coming in late 2010, to consoles and iPhone

As promised, SEGA has broken their silence by releasing new some information about their upcoming downloadable Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. The game will be released in the second half of the year on WiiWare, XBLA, PSN. SEGA has also announced that the game is being developed for iPhone/ iPod Touch.

The SEGA team also announced that extra development time for the title, originally set for a summer release, will be spent fine tuning and balancing the game.

Hopefully a release date will be announced in the coming months, but regardless, it’s nice to know that you can get your Sonic on later this year.

The Sims 3 World Adventures out now on iPhone

Amidst all the iPad hoopla, some iPhone news! Sims 3 expansion World Adventures, has finally traversed the long road to Touch and iPhone. Like the PC original, your Sims can now visit Egypt, France, and China, as well as pick up new items, learn new skills, take on new goals, and more. Apple announces iPhone OS 4 event for Thursday

You haven’t even settled down with your iPads yet, but Apple wants to keep you on your toes. The company has announced that this Thursday, April 8th at 10am PDT, it will offer a look at what we can expect from iPhone OS in the future. A glance at the promo image above is enough for anyone with a brain to figure out that they’re talking about iPhone OS 4.

The event will be taking place at Apple’s Infinite Loop in Cupertino, and we’ll be sure to pass on any game-related information. Or just information in general, why not.

Apple patents several gaming-friendly accessories

Apple is starting to realize that touch screen-only controls aren’t exactly one-size-fits-all for video games. As a result, they’ve gone ahead and patented several shells for an iPhone-like device that provide additional functionality for use with games and apps. Need rumble? Check. A directional pad and action buttons? Check. A clam-shell, dual screen display? Yep, that’s there, too.

Essentially, you would insert your Apple “portable electronic device” (or “iPhone”) into one of many different shells, in a similar manner to which you probably plug your iPhone or iPod into some handy iHome speakers. There’s a ton of interface potential here, especially for gaming. Given Nintendo’s love for both handheld gaming domination and marketing of countless controller accessories (think N64 and Wii), I’m surprised they haven’t rolled out something similar by now.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies turned iPhone game

Last year, author Seth Grahame-Smith became well known for taking the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice, and adding his own new story throughout it. That work became the well received mash-up story, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Now, developer Freeverse has announced an iPhone/iPod Touch game has been created based on the story. The game is a 2.5D side-scroller that pits the tale’s lead character Elizabeth Bennet on a quest to destroy raveneous zombies roaming the English countryside.

A price has not yet been given. The game is set to release this April.

Apple takes a big piece of pie from portable gaming market

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the iPhone and iPod Touch are emerging as a mainstream gaming platform, but just how successful has their entry been into a Nintendo-dominated market? According to Flurry Analytics, game revenues for Apple’s app store have managed to handily eclipse those of Sony’s PlayStation Portable and take away a chunk of Nintendo’s action as well.

Granted, the entire portable games market grew from the $2.25 billion market it was in the US in 2008 to approximately a $2.55 billion market in 2009, but that’s not nearly enough for everyone to benefit. By those figures, the DS market grew, the iPhone market grew, but the PSP market has some serious catching up to do.

Capcom contest to win Street Fighter iPhone case

The holy grail of all gaming iPhone cases, hell, all iPhone cases period has appeared on Capcom’s official blog. The case is designed featuring Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter IV with the text “Waiting for a new challenger” and the Street Fighter IV logo below. Let me wipe the drool off my keyboard now.

Only 40 of these divine cases were made, and Capcom is giving away one through a contest. All you have to do is tell them which title of theirs you’d love to see make it to the iPhone, under the comment section of the article. My vote is for DuckTales. The winner will be selected at random.

Hurry, as the contest ends at 500 comments. Then, someone will officially win the prize of coolest iPhone case.
