I’m with GoNintendo on this one–those homebrewers work ridiculously fast! Save for an error here and there, this World 1-1 recreation from the original Super Mario Brothers is as accurate as it is entertaining. If you’re like me, and didn’t watch any gameplay videos, you may enjoy seeing how certain features from the original New Super Mario Brothers translated on the Wii big screen.

Sadly, comments are disabled on this video so there’s no chance to compliment the hacker, piss and moan about the emulator/slow frame rate, or mention that having listened to the inserted music, I now want to go clubbing. All the same, I can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with next.

People are still blowing out the cartridges and gaming on their old NESs, SNESs, SMSs, Genesises… Heck, I still rock an Atari 2600 and a Commodore 64… Who needs emulators?! More impressive, though, is that hobbyists are still developing for these outdated systems. So with all this gaming and developing going on, isn’t there anything to make the whole ordeal simpler? As I said – who needs emulators? Nobody when crazy enthusiasts come out with custom cartridges that let you load ROMs into memory via USB – for instance, the Quickdev16 developer cartridge for the SNES. These sort of things come out every now and again, and are always built in small batches and therefore rather pricy… But come on, it’s totally worth it to get your own code on your dusty SNES, right? Quickdev16 is geared toward advanced users (not quite plug and play!), is being made in limited batches, and is currently available for an undisclosed and likely fluctuating amount somewhere around $100.

Well, that didn’t take long. New versions of pretty much every homebrew tool that System Menu 4.2 wiped out are now in the wild, ready to take on the new day. This includes HackMii, BootMii, The Homebrew Channel, DVDX, and Bannerbomb. Even if you didn’t opt to install System Menu 4.2, there are a number of solid upgrades here, including fixing NAND dumps in BootMii, and a handful of updates to Homebrew Channel that include more options for display and sorting of installed applications.

If reports from WiiBrew are true (I have no reason to doubt, and therefore don’t really want to test…), System Menu 4.2 is likely the most proactive attack on Wii homebrew that Nintendo has released yet. The likely results are as follows – most of your homebrew will be deleted. The Homebrew Channel will be uninstalled. The Bannerbomb exploit no longer works. BootMii (as boot2) is overwritten. Preloader will not load. This is all do to a few technical changes – the System Menu now uses IOS70, earlier IOSes are modified, and boot2 is upgraded to boot2v4, the cause of strife to homebrew hopefuls on the so-called ‘LU64+’ machines. If your homebrew matters to you, best hold off on upgrading for a while.

Team Twiizers released a new exploit for running unsigned code on the Wii today, aptly named ‘Indiana Pwns.’ The hack is much more in the vein of the classic (albeit squashed by Nintendo) Twilight Hack – the user simply loads a modified save game into Lego Indiana Jones, travels to a specific area in the game, and WHAM! Buffer overflow, and you’re on the road to installing BootMii or running whatever homebrew software suits your fancy. Since Nintendo has yet to eradicate BannerBomb or SmashStack, it’s a curious move to put yet another exploit into the wild – when Nintendo does get around to patching one, they may very well patch them all.

A brand new way to hack the Wii has been discovered. For ages, the only simple way to hack a Wii was to use the Twilight Hack, which uses a hacked save file for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess to run homebrew apps such as the Homebrew Channel installer. This new method involves a hacked custom stage file for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The most significant way in which this differs from the Twilight Hack is that you don’t need to copy a custom save file to your Wii, meaning it’s much more difficult/impossible for Nintendo to fix with a firmware update. The hack has not been made available for public use yet, but it is apparently coming soon. Check out the above video for a demonstration. (The good stuff doesn’t start until just before the minute mark, so feel free to skip ahead.)

In case you were wondering (and of course, you were), you can run Windows 95 on a Wii if you absolutely have to, though “run” implies speed, and the OS most certainly crawls. Using a version of DosBox, a DOS emulator, designed specifically for the Wii, one homebrewer managed to get the 14-year-old operating system to completely load up. He even got Solitaire to load, and it only took one full minute to deal!

The homebrewer’s thoughts on completing such an amazing task?

I did it and now I can move on to more productive things.

Indeed he can.

Well, good ol’ Bob Peloni, sole creator of Bob’s Game who has locked himself in his room to protest Nintendo not selling him a DS development kit, is just under a fifth of the way through his hundred-day voluntary incarceration. Solitary confinement can’t be good for anyone’s psyche, as evidenced by a recent site update:

About a week ago I was contacted by a representative of a hacker-for-hire organization. They said that someone was attempting to hire them to take my site down, but they refused the job because they support me. My site is now being DDoS’d from a known commercial botnet and my servers are being scanned by another known hacker-for-hire group.

This is very serious. Someone at Nintendo wants to silence me. I wonder who it is?

Bob has since updated the… update… to insist that he’s joking. Is he also joking when he threatens to release his game as a homebrew “killer app” that, at least he claims, would cause a boom in flash cart sales:

If I cannot legitimately publish my game, the only option left to fulfill this goal is to release a KILLER APP for a DS “homebrew device.” There has never been a true KILLER APP released for this kind of device, especially as a launch title for a brand new console. “bob’s game” is being translated into many languages, including Japanese, and will be released worldwide. Unfortunately, this has the potential to significantly cut into Nintendo’s bottom line.

Of course, Nintendo would have to be crazy to ignore such a promising game, right?

How can I say this to make them understand? THE GAME IS TREMENDOUSLY GOOD. IT’S EXTRAORDINARY! IT MIGHT SELL A MILLION COPIES. I’VE BARELY SHOWN ANYTHING AT ALL FOR A REASON. I’M NOT GOING TO SPOIL IT TO PROVE IT TO YOU. YOU WILL FIND OUT WHEN IT’S RELEASED. I AM TELLING THE TRUTH! IT’S GREAT! ARE YOU HONESTLY GOING TO FORCE ME TO RELEASE IT FOR FLASHCARTS? ARE YOU INSANE?! THE GAME IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

I don’t know how fun the game is, but I know watching watching Bob is certainly entertaining.

There’s a new flash cart in town, and it works with the Nintendo DSi. As was reported a month ago, currently existing flash carts don’t work with the DSi. Well, thanks to Acekard, that’s no longer true. The Acekard 2i has similar functionality to other DS flash carts. It can run home brew applications and “backups”, as well as store save files. Acekard hasn’t announced when the new Acekard 2i will be available for any Joe Shmoe to run out and buy for themselves, but they do say it ”will come up in a very short time.”

Unfortunate news for home brewers: currently existing DS Lite flash cards don’t work with the DSi. Cards that normally boot automatically fail to do so on the new handheld, while cards that normally boot manually will show up in the DS menu, but cause an error when they attempt to load.

No news yet on whether a work around will be possible, either with existing flash carts of future models. Only time will tell.

What did I tell you? Wii hackers have already found their way around the recent Wii firmware update that blocks the installation of new homebrew apps. At least, it has been applied to the Wii Homebrew Channel. Other apps still can’t be installed with the latest update, but it’s a start.

Also available is a program that allows homebrewers to update the Shop Channel while leaving the rest of the firmware alone, negating the need to update your Wii at all this time.

The battle continues.

The Wii firmware update that was released yesterday prevents new installations of homebrew applications. That means if you already have the Wii Homebrew Channel installed, you can continue to use it. Otherwise, you’re out of luck. (At least until those tricky hackers find a way around it.) The update is required to use the Wii Shop Channel or purchase DLC.

This also means you can no longer install pirated WiiWare and Virtual Console games, which is probably the biggest reason Nintendo has for preventing you from hacking your Wii. It’s just a shame that those other neat homebrew applications get caught up in all this. Feel free to check out WiiBrew for more technical information that goes right over my head.

Normally, the homebrew community likes to create new, original games that spark the imagination. Every now and then, though, we’ll see someone give their own spin on existing IPs. That’s what Destiny Revival is doing with their series of five games based on the Sailor Moon.

kungpow12345 has revealed Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, a widescreen homebrew Wii game with Wii Remote functionality support for up to four players. Both Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon S should be playable by next year’s Otakon in July… assuming kungpow12345 doesn’t get sued and the project shut down beforehand.

Regardless of whether you were a fan or not, most of you are probably old enough to remember the anime series’ heyday. For a little blast to the past, I’ve thrown the English intro video after the break for you to enjoy.

Smash Bros. isn’t coming to the DS anytime soon, but that doesn’t seem to stop the fans desperate for the game. Fuzzy has a working homebrew demo of “Super Smash Bros. Rumble” on his website, complete with two playable characters, a handful of stages, and no multiplayer!

It’s a decent start for an ambitious project, and you can go download it and try it out provided you have the means. It’s not like your going to be able to play a completed version of Fuzzy’s game – I’m sure Nintendo’s legal team is already waiting to pounce on the use of Nintendo properties any minute now.
