It may not be the revolutionary Wii Zelda title we’re all waiting for (and will inevitably receive), but The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will be our next adventure with Link after a notable franchise hiatus.

Delving further into the steam age, Link seems to have left his paddle steamer in the water in favor of his new locomotive train. Like Phantom Hourglass, you’ll use the touch screen to draw out your train track path on the map and fire your cannon. We’ve got the GDC trailer above for you to enjoy until we get more information on the game, scheduled to be in your DSi by the end of 2009!

In case you weren’t convinced, Nintendo wanted to hammer home the fact that the Wii and Nintendo DS are the two fastest selling game consoles in the history of EVER.

Almost immediately after taking the stage at GDC today, Satoru Iwata tooted this Nintendo horn and confirmed that they had shipped 50 million Wii consoles around the world, nearly all of which have disappeared instantly from store shelves as if they were Beanie Babies and this were 1996. Similarly, the Nintendo DS and its various redesigns have shipped over 100 million units across the globe, four of which are sitting on my desk. Not a bad trend, especially these days.

Press release after the break!

NINTENDO PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES WII STORAGE SOLUTION, NEW ZELDA GAME AND 50 MILLION GLOBAL WII SHIPMENT

Keynote Details Nintendo DSi News on Eve of Launch

SAN FRANCISCO, March 25, 2009 – Nintendo President Satoru Iwata today revealed surprises for consumers and an expanded palette of video game development opportunities for the industry during his keynote address at the Game Developers Conference. Iwata announced a new storage solution for Nintendo’s Wii™ home console and showed video highlights of a new Nintendo DS™ game from The Legend of Zelda™ franchise.

Video game developers now have expanded opportunities given that worldwide shipments for the Wii system surpassed 50 million units and worldwide shipments for the Nintendo DS franchise are at more than 100 million units. Iwata said, “It is in the power of game developers to invent things that gamers have never seen – or even imagined – before.”

Nintendo also noted several key initiatives that are on the way for consumers, some of which are available at the Nintendo GDC booth.

Announced today at GDC, Wii Menu 4.0 now supports SDHC cards, meaning you’ll be able to store anywhere from 2GB up to 32GB worth of Virtual Console games, WiiWare, and more DLC on a single SDHC card. What’s better, you’ll be able to play games right off of the cards without having to transfer them to the Wii’s measly 512MB internal memory, and you can access them through a new option on the Wii Menu.

The only downside is that in order for anything to run off the SD cards, you need to have that amount of free space on the Wii in order for the game or other content to be temporarily loaded into the Wii memory. The solution? Just store everything on the largest SD card you’ve got now.
