There comes a point when graffiti crosses the line from “defacing public property” to “al fresco art”. I think we know where this mural lies. Somewhere between “Oh hey, look at that awesome mural” and “Why can’t my city’s graffiti be more like that?”.

Sonic fan recreates Mushroom Hill Zone in video form

Boy “fan art” is not what it used to be!

Found on the glorious Internet was this lonesome video of Sonic the Hedgehog in glorious high definition, returning to his natural 2D environment. No, it’s not a trailer for SEGA’s upcoming Sonic 4: Episode 1, but instead a fan project that recreated the Mushroom Hill Zone level.

Look at the textures, the lighting effects, the everything. Pretty great looking if you ask me. Sadly, this isn’t a demo of a fan made game, but rather just a video. Still, it’s inspiring, and there is still some hope that Sonic 4 can look as great.

And if you’re wondering, SEGA has seen the video, hastily responding “we’ve seen it for the love of Tikal, we’ve seen it!” Sounds like their a bit on edge since it’s not their footage, ey?

Street Fighter: Don’t Hassel the Hoff edition

If there are two live action shows on TV that I loved during my childhood, it was watching Baywatch and reruns of Knight Rider. It seems Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono shares my high view of David Hasselhoff, based on his latest interpretation of a Hoff versus Hoff Street Fighter.

Implementing Hoff’s signature mug onto the Street Fighter selection screen was pure genius. But imagining a Michael Knight versus Mitch Bucannon Street Fighter would be a dream come true. Make it happen.

Wondering when Picasso went through his Hyrule period? This is actually a piece of fan art! Says the artist, Flickr user Ewige:

“If Link looks somewhere between concerned and insanely worried, that is because he is about to fall into lava because he has his boomerang equipped instead of his hookshot. I can almost hear Navi cackling at his misfortune.”

Pffft. Adult Ocarina of Time Link didn’t even have a boomerang.

Mega Man, mini-minimalism

These adorable Robot Master avatars are dubbed “mini minimalism” by their creator, the London based graphics artist known as Infinite Continues. We’ve featured his video game minimalism designs here at The Tanooki before, some of which went on to be iPhone skin pre-order bonuses for Super Street Fighter IV in Europe.

I’ve always loved that combination of simple, clean aesthetics and bright colors that his work entails. Two games down, eight to go! Let’s hope he gets to them all!

The Melty Molten Galaxy is already immortalized in fan art!

Sheesh, and to think I was impressed with people who’d even bought Super Mario Galaxy 2 yet, much less had gotten to the Melty Molten Galaxy. And this artist, Peachifruit, has done that and then some.

I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised. We Galaxy players require nimble fingers, after all!

There’s nothing I love more than video game fan art for grownups. I have a lot of geek art in my home, but mostly of the juvenile variety. Vintage posters, Perler pixel hangings. These two pieces, however, are framed in recycled Australian wood and come with spiffy (if not a bit hairy) hand models to show off the fine craftmanship. Totally beats my I Beat The 8 Robots wall scroll any day.

Street Fighter fan films better quality than feature films

With the out pour of love from fans and critics for Super Street Fighter IV, it’s no wonder a few devoted fans have turned themselves into filmmakers, creating short films of the franchise’s most notorious characters in battle. What is surprising however, is the quality far surpasses anything we’ve seen on the silver screen.

The latest video to show off a live action version of Capcom’s fighting sensation is titled “Street Fighter: Beginning Ends.” Aside from that pretty atrocious Ken wig, which comes equipped with a questionable pony tail, the fight sequences are brilliantly captured. Even the editing effects are very well executed.

Just a few short days ago, a video circulated showing a teaser trailer for a new Street Fighter mini-movie, created by actor and series fan Joey Ansah (Bourne Ultimatum). His vision, called Street Fighter: Legacy, will be seen when the film releases online this Thursday. In fact, Capcom has even given their seal of approval, and is promoting Ansah’s film. Check out the trailer after the break.

Pretty great to see fans stepping up to create their own works of art. It’s great to live in a time where if the film industry disappoints us, we can show them how it’s done.

One mighty Mega Man mosaic

Mosaic is defined (by me) to be a series of tiny bits of something or other, arranged to make a larger picture when viewed from a distance. It’s like pixel artwork, only you can use whatever junk you find. Therein lies the appeal. This Mega Man mosaic was actually made of several Mega Man screens spanning the first six games. Clever and cute, it’s a Mega Man masterpiece!
