Modifying a console in Canada could mean 10 years in jail

A recent piracy raid in Quebec, Canada brought to light just how severe the punishments for piracy can be under Canadian law. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police released a statement reminding the public that, “Modifying a console or computer is consider an illegal act under Section 342.1 of the Criminal Code and is punishable by imprisonment for up to ten years.” There is a small amount of ambiguity it the law that allows for leniency, but it’s pretty much down to whether or not authorities can say your tampering had illegal intent.

Be safe, don’t modify your consoles to play pirated games… or else by the next time you’ll be checking game blogs, we’ll have gone through about a dozen Nintendo handhelds.

As more and more publishers are opening up studios in Canada in addition to all the independent developers currently based up north, Canada continues to grow in terms of video game production. In fact, recent data shows that over 247 Canadian game companies and subsidiaries now employ over 14,000 individuals, surpassing the number in the United Kingdom and trailing behind only the United States and Japan.

Why the sudden growth? It seems that aggressive tax incentives and low costs of living are enticing developers to Canada, which in turn provides a local resource for students looking to get into the video game industry.

Microsoft has returned the results to a poll asking many northern neighbors how they like to and where they play games. I’m not sure why this poll happened either, just try not to think about that too hard.

Either way, the most common responses included in the bedroom, the bathroom, public, ect. and the results were pretty typical. But most surprisingly, when you get straight down to it, almost 20 percent of men who responded said they have played naked, and almost 10 percent of women have.

It’s something I have never thought about, but I guess it isn’t that weird. I tip my hat to all of those Canadians who are trying their hardest to make the great white north the great tan north. Somebody has to do it.
