With Call of Duty: Black Ops taking up so much of gamers’ times, I wouldn’t be surprised if all that gaming came at the expense of family time. What if those gamers saw Call of Duty as an obligation, necessitating time away from the family, despite the bonds of love? Well, we might get something like these letters posted at Dorkly.

Every time I hear “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” it sounds like they are saying “Call of Duty: Black Cops.” Know what I’m saying?

Moving on; with Treyarch’s next entry in the Call of Duty franchise appearing on store shelves next week, it’s time for some heavy promotion. I often wondered when we’d see a star studded commercial starring Kobe Bryant and Jimmy Kimmel running through a war zone, to promote Call of Duty: Black Ops. Just as I suspected, that day is today.

The latest ad promoting the first-person-shooter shows the array of everyday people who take part in the mass killing simulator, which just happens to include a professional athlete and a late night talk show host. But really, is there any better way to sell a game than to show Jimmy Kimmel firing a rocket launcher? No, the answer is no.

Activision registers Call of Duty: Secret Warfare, and other names

As if the announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops wasn’t enough for FPS fans, Activision Blizzard may be planning another Call of Duty title, or titles. The company has found to have registered titles Call of Duty: Future Warfare, Call of Duty: Secret Warfare and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Either Activision is giving themselves a few title options, or you can expect a few more games may be in the works. Of course, it will likely be some time before we get more details. But patience people, we haven’t even got Black Ops yet!

Call of Duty: Black Ops announced

A brand new Call of Duty title has been announced for release November 9th of this year. Call of Duty: Black Ops, developed by Treyarch, will “introduce fans to the elite world of Black Ops.” The new game is a follow up to Modern Warfare 2: Call of Duty.

“We can’t wait for our community to experience Call of Duty: Black Ops,” said Mark Lamia, head of Treyarch. “We have focused our entire studio on this game, with dedicated multiplayer, single-player and co-op teams creating the most intense, gripping and riveting experience possible for our fans on all fronts.”

The announcement comes just weeks after reports of internal struggles, specifically the firing of Infinity Ward head Jason West and CEO Vince Zampella, by Activision. It will be interesting to see what Treyarch has done with the follow up to the most successful video game launch in history. Treyarch was responsible for several Call of Duty titles before, including the Wii version of Modern Warfare, subtitled Reflex.

Call of Duty (and zombies!) coming to iPad

Looks like Civilization Revolution isn’t the only one moving on up! iPhone favorite Call of Duty: World At War: Zombies will be shuffling its way to iPad as well. This version comes with two maps (Night of the Undead’ and ‘Zombie Asylum’), worldwide multiplayer through WiFi (No 3G), up to four person local multiplayer, and achievements and leaderboards. Priced at $14.99, it will be one of the more expensive App Store items, but the price is subject to change before the iPad launch. There is no confirmation on if this version will continue to have support and updated maps like the iPhone version, but it will be available as of the iPad’s April 3 launch.

Rumor: Next Call Of Duty to take place in Vietnam?

There has been speculation, rumors, and downright wishful thinking surrounding the next location of the Call of Duty series, mostly centered around former political hotbed Vietnam. Now with this little blurb from a casting call description, we may have some sort of confirmation. The casting call lists “motion and VO work” for a Call of Duty related Activision video game, and describes a character, WWII vet Frank Barnes, as part of an elite group performing secret operations within Vietnam. This will mark one of the first, if not THE first, war games to delve into the still-touchy topic of America’s occupation of Vietnam. What say you, COD fans? Is this a refreshing new direction for war games (drop the WWII and back away slowly…), or is the concept less satisfying when justification for the war is as flimsy as a negligee?

Call Of Duty Classic hits PS3 and XBOX 360

If you’re one of the five people on the planet who isn’t playing Call Of Duty:Modern Warfare 2, or you’re just in the mood for some classic COD, then this may be of interest to you. Call Of Duty Classic, a “remastered” version of the original Call Of Duty, will making its debut this week on both XBOX Live and PSN. The 360 version will retail for 1200 points on Live, starting Wednesday, while the Playstation Network version is set for a Thursday release, at $14.99.

Call of Duty franchise reaches 3 billion in sales

Hey here’s something you may not have heard lately: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 made a lot of money! And now Activision has found another way to tell us so, with a new press release trumpeting their latest achievement. According to “The NPD Group, Charttrack, GfK and internal Activision estimates”, with the $550 million in five-day sales of CODMW2, the Call of Duty franchise has officially made over $3 billion in revenue world wide. Says Activision CEO Bobby Kotick:

“Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history.”

Self congratulatory press-speak aside, it certainly is quite an accomplishment, one that clearly illustrates how powerful video games have become in the entertainment industry. Kudos to Activision.

Let the Call Of Duty MMO rumors begin (again)

Last year, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick hinted at a possible Call of Duty massive multiplayer online game, commenting that Blizzard’s solid experience with MMO and heavy weight in the gaming community were assets to the company that were considered heavily before purchasing parent company Vivendi. Now, a recent LA Times article about the Call of Duty phenomenon had an interesting tidbit about that very thing, mentioning that Activision has taken on a third developer (currently, Infinity Ward and Treyarch alternate development of COD titles) and are looking into making Call of Duty an MMO:

One person close to the company said it also was considering adapting Call of Duty as a massively multi-player online world. The genre, in which Activision’s Blizzard Entertainment subsidiary is a leader, requires huge upfront investments but can be very profitable as players pay a monthly subscription fee.

In other words, Activision and Blizzard are currently working on a way to milk you on a monthly basis like the MTN DEW addicted WoW fiends! How nice of them! On the bright side of things, though, it might be nice to see an FPS MMO on the market. Would you play a COD MMO?

Activision confirms new Spider Man, Guitar Hero, and Call of Duty

In Duh News Of The Day, Activision has confirmed that their future plans include new installments in their blockbuster franchises Guitar Hero, Spider Man, and Call of Duty. From a “3rd quarter financial call”:

“In 2010, Activision publishing is expected to release a strong product line of innovative new titles,” said Activision chief financial officer Thomas Tipple. “The diversified lineup will include, among others, titles based on the best-selling franchises in the company’s history, including Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Shrek, and Spiderman, and a select few new intellectual properties such as Blur and Singularity, and a strong catalog based on our top sellers of 2009.”

Ugh I hate the use of the phrase “intellectual properties”. It basically means “here’s something else we’re going to try to milk for all its worth, no matter how ridiculous or desperate it appears to be”. I also find it hilarious that they used the world “diversified” in the same breathe as mentioning all the franchises they will continue to squeeze every last drop out of. More of the same? Yup, that’s diverse!

Still though, the world can never have enough Call of Duty, am I right?

Call of Duty: World at War DLC discount til Nov. 1

Looks like Brutal Legend isn’t the only one with a deal on DLC. From now until November 1, the DLC map packs available for Call of Duty: World at War will be offered at half price, only on XBOX Live. That’s right, get any of the three map packs for only 400 Microsoft Points ($5) each.

Its a great time for gaming deals! Don’t forget Best Buy’s cross-console “two for one” games sale this week, which ends on Halloween.
