I’ve been told that The Tanooki just doesn’t post enough game cake anymore. Well, I’m here to fix that. A fan attending New York Comic Con just plopped this in the laps of the good folks over at Capcom, and they were kind enough to share a picture. The art style of Mega Man Universe (which you can see a sample of from a photo I took at the Capcom booth at PAX 2010) really does lend itself well to the fondant icing technique, don’t you think?

I love seeing quality game cakes. Some are complicated, some are simple, but what I appreciate about them is their attention to detail.

Check out a perfect example of that in this cake created by Rachel Melnick, commissioned by a bride as a surprise for her groom. This NES cake didn’t have a ton of flash or frills, but what’s there looked almost 100% authentic. In fact, there’s even a picture of the couple picking up and holding the controllers as actual controllers. The colors, proportions, everything was absolutely perfect. Absolutely beautiful. If only all cakes received this much care while being made, I’m sure we’d have a much more thorough collection of wedding cakes to show off!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I feel the need to compensate for this post and find something more manly to do.

Normally when you think of 16th birthdays, you think big parties (well, “high school” big), first car, things like that. You don’t usually associate it with game cakes.

Luckily for Adena, a cake was waiting. Not just any ol’ cake, either – it’s a Harvest Moon birthday cake. I don’t think we’ve ever seen one of those before!

In case you weren’t able to make it out to this year’s “That Takes the Cake!” contest in Austin, Texas, we’ll give you a partial summary – the part that matters to us gamers. In the category of “Special Occasion or Novelty Tiered Cakes,” a New Super Mario Bros. Wii cake won second place, sandwiched in between a Candyland cake in third and a Hat Box cake in first. Yeah. A hat box.

The “Super Mario Birthday Bash” cake was made by Mendy Lindsay, who impressively made this cake as part of the adult beginners’ division. You can click on through to check out the full picture of the cake, taken by snarkygurl.

Jewelry-maker and graphic designer Robin Dahlberg of Steelhead Studio apparently holds a “big game party” to ring in any given new year, and this year’s game was a 100 question quiz. A quiz, not written on paper, but drawn on cupcakes with fondant. Oh, and the questions were all identifying a variety of games. Luckily, photos were taken of every cupcake, and the quiz is now available online! It’s not strictly video-game related – about half of the games are the old-fangled made-out-of-paper-or-cardboard-or-wood sort, with the remainder being the sit-back-and-drool-with-a-controller-in-your-hand variety that we all know so well. Seen above are my favorite three entries, looking as delicious as they are nostalgic. Hit up the link below if you’re not afraid of a little Comic Sans, and you have a few minutes to kill and a handful of cupcakes on hand – trust me on this one, the game will make you hungry!

So I think I mentioned earlier that I’ve got a graduation party later today. I’m not making much of a big deal about it, and it’s going to end up just being mostly my relatives (who the ‘rents invited), and my brother’s friends (I graduated from college in May, he graduated from high school). I didn’t really bother inviting anyone because I’ve been student teaching for the past 5 months, non-stop, clocking between 60 and 70 hours per week at my assigned schools. Heck, I may have graduated, but I’ve technically got about 4 more hours left of student teaching. Graduation parties were the furthest thing from my mind the past few weeks.

Obviously, I put no planning into my own graduation party. Parents of five year olds? They’ve got a lot more time on their hands than I did this past semester. One such couple requested the cake you see above for their Kindergarten graduate, and Cakes with L.O.V.E. was happy to oblige. Luigi’s got the cap and gown and everything. Man, now I wish I planned out my party…

There have been some amazing, edible creations that we’ve posted on this site, but this one takes the cake. Hannah couldn’t make up her mind as to the cake she wanted for her fourth birthday, so her parents played through Super Mario Galaxy with her to make the Galaxy cake all the more convincing. Several concept designs later, this beauty was ready to be cut up and eaten.

And just when you thought the cake looked complex enough, the masterpiece you see before you is loaded with Rice Krispes Treats, electrical wiring, motors, mp3 players, a heavy wooden frame, fiber optic lights, you name it… all for the most magical undertaking I’ve seen for anything intended to be gobbled up. I think I might just cry… both at the sheer beauty of the video footage after the break, and knowing where the remains of the cake now rest…

I’m pretty sure Hannah had a better fourth birthday cake than all of us. Read on for that video as well as some additional photos. NOW.

Nothing beats strawberries on a cake (unless it’s strawberries on an ice cream cake). Nevertheless, you can always one-up (pun intended) all the other strawberry covered cakes out there by making yours with a smile.

peewee_wm did just that. Granted, the smile is actually on the Mii gracing the top of the cake, but that doesn’t take anything away from the cake. There’s no better time than stuffing your face with… someone else’s face.

You get some pretty interesting celebrations for a child when the parents are gamers. Game cakes, Mario parties, you name it. Lori from Clever Cake Studio was given the job of creating cupcakes for a pair of game loving parents for their baby shower, creating the Pikmin cupcakes you see above.

Originally, the marzipan Pikmin were supposed to be smaller and buried in the cupcakes (like in the games), but Lori went with the designs that didn’t involve sticking wires inside the tasty Pikmin. I’m pretty sure no one minded the change, just so long as they got to play Bulborbs and devour all those delicious Pikmin one by one.

I’m not sure why video game themed cakes are all the rage right now (besides the fact that they are awesome), but everything from Super Mario Bros. to Zelda to Super Smash Bros. has sprung up as a sugary tribute.

That being said, this latest confectionery contraption, which launched alongside Mario Kart Wii at one lucky couple’s wedding, blows away the competition. Don’t get me wrong, the other cakes are all amazing in their own right, but the level of detail put into this cake is unprecedented. Characters are driving specific karts. Rainbow Road is rainbowed. Peach is even giving Mario a little peck on the nose. More pictures outlining the finer points of this gravity defying work of art after the break.

I promise that I had no intention of making the thumbnails look like a castle. But you have to admit, with a flag pole and some fireworks, that puppy is straight out of world 1-1.

Young Ash and her husband decided to have a cake themed after The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker made for their wedding, claiming “this was the one way we could really express ourselves in the wedding without making parents go crazy.” As you can see, it’s clearly one of the best video game cakes the internet has ever seen. Honestly, gamer or not, who actually goes to be the one to cut a cake like this? At the very least, it’s hard to imagine someone going at it without severe amounts of guilt. In fact, a cake like this should go in a museum.
