This might be a reason not to buy the WiiWare version of the popular World of Goo.  In celebration of the game’s birthday 2D Boy Games is giving you the choice to pay whatever you want for the title.  Whether it’s a penny, or the $20 the game typically costs, it’s up to you.  The offer only applies to downloading the game using Windows, Mac or Linux.

This inexpensive and irresistible offer ends October 19th.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Kyle Gabler of 2D Boy. So what has he been up to? Well, he’s still working on that mystery project with Henry Hatsworth creator Allan Blomquist. They still haven’t revealed any details about their upcoming WiiWare game, but Gabler has dropped a hint:

“The three of us are cooking up a new game for WiiWare, currently ‘in the works.’ We haven’t mentioned anything about it to anyone, but here’s a clue – the new game from the the three of us is based on one of the experimental games from our past.”

Well, the last time 2D Boy made a game based on a past experiment, it went pretty well. Commence speculation.

The award-winning indie hit World of Goo is finally getting its PAL WiiWare release this coming Friday. It will hit the service in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand for 1500 Wii Points. Europeans should be happy, since there almost wasn’t a WiiWare release at all in Europe.

There’s not much more I can say about this game that I haven’t already said before. It’s amazing. Buy it.

If you’ve been paying attention, you probably know by now that World of Goo is an indie game made by a two-man team called 2D Boy. The original concept is by Kyle Gabler, the ‘first’ half of 2D Boy, who quit his job at EA to create games his own way. After partnering up with Ron Carmel, they worked out of coffee shops, going forever deeper in debt, to eventually release World of Goo. The end result? Money. How much money? Well, they won’t say, but Gabler is dropping a hint.

When we started this indie thing it was a risk. We didn’t know if we’d make money. We were working off of savings and if everybody hated our game we would be crushed financially and emotionally. But we can finally say that, two years after leaving our jobs, we are better off financially and emotionally than we would have been had we stayed at the same company where we were working.

After playing World of Goo, I want these guys to become billionaires. They deserve it.

2D Boy announced today, via their official blog, that the planned retail Wii version of World of Goo will not be hitting European at all. Instead, they’ve submitted the WiiWare version to Nintendo for review, and are hoping for a release next month.

This will most likely help World of Goo become as successful as it deserves to be. Not a lot of people are willing to pay twice as much for a game when the only bonus is an extra chapter. 

World of Goo will have the same content in Europe as it does in America, and will most likely cary the same price tag of 1500 Wii Points. Take it from me. This game is totally worth it.

World of Goo is kind of pricey as far as WiiWare titles go (tied with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King at 500 points more than the next most expensive game), so many Wii owners have been understandably reluctant to plop down the points. Well, 2D Boy hopes to tip you over to his side of the fence, and has released a demo of the PC version.

The demo covers the entire first world of the game, which includes several levels. (I was on the fourth one when I ran off to write this article.) That’s quite a nice chunk of the game you get to whet your appetite with. I know it convinced me to see if I can ninja a Points Card for myself tomorrow.

2D Boy’s World of Goo is headed soon to WiiWare in North America. The Lemmings-esque game requires you to guide balls of goo to an exit, building bridges, towers, and more to help you reach your destination. The game showed up on Nintendo of Europe’s retail release list a few days ago, causing confusion among millions.

Actually, World of Goo is going to be given a few Europe-exclusive bonus features (cue the angry complaints from Americans with no perspective) and will see a full fledged retail release. Disc, manual, case, and all… even box art!

Our European publisher, RTL Playtainment, is planning to release both the Wii and PC versions as retail titles. We’re going to add some extra content to the European version that won’t be available in North America or Japan.

Extra content: We’re not sure how much extra content there will be, we’re still figuring that out with RTL.

Price: It’s not going to be a budget title, but I don’t know if it will be “full price” either. This up to RTL and their distribution network to figure out. They’re going to be presenting the game at the Leipzig GC… that might be a good place to ask them about pricing.

WiiWare vs. Retail: RTL is experienced in bringing retail games to market. They’ve also dealt fairly and honestly with us and that means a lot to us after experiences we’ve had with other publishers. In general, Kyle and I favor digital distribution because when you go retail there are a lot of people making money off the game and there’s a much smaller piece left for the developer. Retail does have one significant advantage over digital though: publishers are use to paying an advance for a game. After having worked on this game for over a year, burning through savings and getting into debt we were simply nearing the end of our runway and it started being pretty important for us to get some money coming in. RTL was there to help us. We’re trying to compensate for the price difference by making some exclusive content for the European version, but we know that some people will still be annoyed that the game will cost more in Europe. We’re sad about that, because we just want people to play the game and have fun. We’d be giving it away for free if we didn’t need to eat and pay rent.
