Friday Night Concerts: Koji Kondo performs the Mario theme!

Published by Christian under Friday Night Concert, Videos

It’s Friday night again, and for tonight’s concert we’ll check out the master of Nintendo music himself: Mr. Koji Kondo! The video above shows Mr. Kondo performing the Super Mario Bros. theme without the help of sound chips or electronic instruments. It’s just him and the piano, and that’s all you really ever need. Enjoy!

Contra III on the NES. Wait, what?

Published by Robert under Videos

Contra III never saw a NES release and for good reason. It was released on the more powerful and arguably the best console of all-time, Super Nintendo. But thanks the powers of homebrew the heavens, it has been ported to the NES and hardware specs considered, looks great. The above video is from from the NES port, hit the jump to see the more familiar SNES version for comparison.

Sandbag enters back into atmosphere; new record set

Published by Christian under Videos, Wii

What’s your furthest home run in Brawl so far? Is it over 6792.9 ft? Probably not, and thus you fail at gaming.

Actually, no, that mark is currently the home run record caught on YouTube video on an American version of the game. You can even catch said video after the break. As everyone knows, of course, those Japanese beat Americans at almost everything game related. The one above? 6427.3 meters. Meters. Yeah, that’s 21,086.94 ft for those who can’t multiply it in their heads.

Still competent?

Friday Night Concerts: 6-year-old Michael’s piano recital

Published by Christian under Friday Night Concert, Videos

Little Michael’s piano recital above is the product of only 18 months of piano lessons. See what practice does, kids? Makes you want to stick to that oboe a little longer.

Michael starts out with Fur Elise, which is a classic on its own. If you’re short on time, however, you can skip ahead to about 2:45 in to hear him perform a pair of Super Mario Bros. tunes. Not bad for a little guy.

Zero Punctuation reviews Zack & Wiki

Published by matthew under Videos

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Yahtzee around these parts, but I’m delighted to welcome him back. Not to spoil the review, but it covers a lot of the same points that Christian covered in his review of the game. My biggest issue with Zack & Wiki was with the motion controls required to use each item- a great concept, but it’s only great if the game actually responded properly to your motions. Thankfully, Yahtzee doesn’t let this flaw off easy.

Oh, and here is a great big ol’ NSFW warning. For those of you who are afraid of acronyms: this video contains a ton of swearing/cussing/vulgarity/profanity/dirty words. Don’t watch it if you are easily offended.

Just in from Japan: How to download WiiWare games

Published by Ryan under WiiWare, Videos

Even though many of us have our calendars marked for the North American WiiWare release date, many of us wouldn’t mind just taking a tiny peak at what the service has to offer beforehand. Actually, some of us wouldn’t even mind watching someone just download games. While the video shows some internet “lag,” I can only imagine that the WiiWare servers themselves are being bombarded by hordes of download requests from eager Wii customers.

Japanese intro video for Mario Kart Wii

Published by Christian under Videos, Wii

Poor Luigi. Check out the beginning of the video and you’ll know what I mean. Heck, you probably already know what I mean.

You’ll probably see this same footage when you pick up your copy of the game this April. Has it hit you yet that the game’s a month away?

Friday Night Concerts: Classic Games Medley

Published by Christian under Friday Night Concert, Videos

I hate medleys, but sometimes there’s no other way to cram dozens of video game themes into eight minutes of live performance. Granted, they have their moments. For example, who knew that “Ride of the Valkyries” from Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre opera could make Atari games seem so epic? It’s a fun video, no doubt.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to planning the next site contest… or playing Frogger.

Beef buried between cats and dogs via Wii Sports

Published by Ryan under Novelty, Videos, Wii

Even though cats and dogs have been fierce rivals for millennia, they finally found a way to peacefully settle the score once and for all. All it took was the recent arrival of the popular Wii Sports Tennis to bury the hatchet. Be prepared for some serious laughs, everyone!

Controlling Mario Kart with and without the wheel

Published by Christian under Videos, Wii

080319mariokart.jpg

Stephen Totilo received the rare chance to sit down with both Mario Kart Wii and an insistent Nintendo rep, getting to try out both the Wii Wheel and the Wii Remote alone. Videos of both are after the break. Stephen seems like the Wii Wheel more after trying out both, but you’ll get a chance to see for yourself - and really decide come April.

I wasn’t quite sold on the Wii Wheel before, but after seeing it in action, I’m convinced that “having something to hold” can make it much easier and less awkward for turns, wheelies, what have you. I’m always in favor of newer motion controls for Wii games, but there are some stubborn gamers that never give it a chance - they’ll use the GameCube controller off the bat, and never give the Wii Remote a chance. What do you think?
