Entire NES game collection up for grabs

Published by Robert

nes-ebay.JPG

Have extra space in your house? Or better yet, how about an entire attic? Great, then you should check out this NES collection up for grabs on eBay. It’s not like any ol’ collection, it’s an amassment of every single North American NES game released; a whopping 670 in total. If you’ve misplaced a game over time or gave away your entire weak, pathetic excuse of a collection of NES games from when you were a kid, I bet you would find it here.

Okami boxart brought to you by IGN

Published by Pete

okami-boxart.jpg

On Okami’s Wii box art, there is one glaring addition, an IGN watermark just below the wolf’s mouth. It’s hard to see in the picture, but I can testify that on the actual box it is very clear. There’s no mistaking it for a coincidence once you see it in person. Score one for the convenience of Google, as apparently image searching on the web is easier than finding a photo that your own company distributed. Seems like an obvious oversight, but either way you should find a copy of the case and check it out. The actual image used from IGN after the break.

Metriod film rumors still alive; movie poster surfaces

Published by Pete

metroid-movie.jpg

Rumors have been swirling about a Metroid movie for awhile, but a photo of what appears to be a blurry movie poster recently added some fire to the flame. Supposedly, John Woo is behind the reigns, and is dropping the announcement power bomb at this years Comic Con. We haven’t seen much recent work from Woo, which means he very well could have been hard at work translating the Nintendo classic to the big screen. This makes sense, as he optioned the rights to a Metroid movie back in 2004. I usually don’t like video game movies (or movie video games for that matter), but would happily pay to see a Metroid movie, as long as they have the awesome intro to Super Metroid in there somewhere.

Write the (first) Mailbag (of 2008)!

Published by Christian

mailbag_galaxy.jpg

So I’ve been getting random submissions in my inbox labeled “Mailbag” for the last few weeks, and I just now realized: we’ve not done one since the new year. Who’s up for another one? We’ll try to get this one up by next Sunday, March 2nd (since the following Sunday, everyone will be busy playing some other game - probably some Petz game). Of course, that will only happen if we have enough submissions to respond to! So…

Good advice for developers: Learn to play like a 3-year old

Published by Michael

In an interesting article written at The Escapist, Wendy Despain (the author), discusses her experience playing video games with her nephews:

I’ve been to a lot of conference sessions talking about how to make games better than they are. I’ve read a lot of books about it and seen even more books on Amazon about it. The game industry likes to talk about this subject - a lot. And who knows? I may not have been able to identify what was annoying my little friends about these games if I hadn’t been studying the subject myself.

But I just can’t shake the feeling that all us game developers would learn these lessons better if we just sat down and played like a 3-year-old for a while. Even if we’re making games for grown-ups. As we get older we get jaded. We expect to be disappointed. We aren’t surprised by inadequacy and sloppy work. We tolerate mediocrity and even find comfort in the mistakes that have become tradition through repetition.

The whole article isn’t very long, and is very much worth the couple of minutes it will take you to read it. I can’t remember how many times I’ve thought to myself: “What we’re the developers thinking?” while playing games. The video games industry is fairly young and inexperienced compared to other entertainment industries such as Film or even Books, but that’s no excuse for some of the basic errors in judgment sprinkled all throughout even the best games.

The Tanooki Forums/Mailbag/BlahBlahBlah/Etc

Published by Christian

forums_typing.jpg

News is getting slower as we near the holidays, so I’ll take this quick opportunity to make some reminders. Our forums are still alive and kicking, with several of our members discussing everything from Brawl to Pilotwings to Virtual Console games and Game of the Year awards. We always welcome new members of course, so head on over and check it out if you don’t already. I’ve got a Game Night forum that hasn’t been used yet and won’t be activated until I know we have the people to participate…

Also, we’re still taking in mailbag questions! They may or may not be answered in post-form…but they’ll be answered this weekend guaranteed. So, if you’ve got any questions, comments, or anything else for the staff here about anything at all, feel free to write the mailbag.

We’re still taking applicants and reviewing existing submissions to add writers to our news team. Primarily, we’re looking for 1. someone from the UK, 2. someone from Australia, 3. someone from Japan, but will take all submissions. If you’re interested, head over to our application page. Note: The spam filter is not currently working, so send ALL materials to the e-mail address listed on that page.

That’s it for now. I’ll be sticking around to post any news I find, so check back or hang out in the forums!

It’s been forever since we’ve done a mailbag, and for that we’re very sorry to those who enjoy reading them. We are sitting on two submissions, though, so we’re going to go ahead and try and beef that up. If you have an questions or comments that you’d like to send to any or all of the staff, use our mailbag link below.

This set of mailbag submissions may or may not be answered in written form, but they will be answered within a week or so. Don’t be afraid to hit us with what you’ve got!
