The clock is ticking for those still using GameCubes

Published by Christian under GameCube, Arts & Crafts

With the Wii having smoked past the lifetime sales of the GameCube back in January (and on track to surpass lifetime Nintendo 64 sales by September), I’m sure there are a lot of you whose GameCubes are sitting in a closet collecting dust. For others of you, you’re finding creative ways of showing off the little box that couldn’t, albeit reducing it to not much more than an over-sized timekeeper.

Of course, if it no longer works, maybe you’ll want to take a cue from Nick Magdoza and make something of it. Make no mistake, this would look pretty cool hanging in an office (by its handle, no less).

You can check out a video of the clock after the break.

Japan gets white GameCube controllers

Published by Jim under GameCube

Love playing Smash Bros. with your GameCube controller, but hate how purple and white clash? Well if you happen to live in the land of the rising sun Nintendo is coming to the rescue!

While there’s no word on a North American release, don’t be surprised if you see these pop up on your favorite online import shop in the near future. They’ll be going for ¥2,000 when they’re released later this month, or about $19.50 to you and me. While the release date is pinned down for April, no specific date has been mentioned.

Wall-E, a gamer at heart

Published by Michael under GameCube, Culture

Looking surprisingly like the actual star of Pixar animation studio’s Wall-E movie, this little robot actually has the guts of a working GameCube:

First we build a movable platform out of a child toy and a rest of Plexiglas. The Gamecube itself is covered with a thin layer of acrylic which we airbrushed like the original wall-e. The Arms were made out of some plastic and plexiglas tubes and rods. The arms and the hands are both moveable so that wall-e can take up various positions

Considering Pixar’s track record, Wall-E should be a great movie, but what if he could play video games with you? Check after the break for more screens of the cute little guy.

Nintendo calls it quits on the WaveBird

Published by Christian under GameCube

080103nowave.jpgLooks like the industry’s first good wireless console controller has kicked the bucket. A response from Nintendo’s customer service concerning WireBird Wireless Controller availability in stores hints that the controller has been discontinued.

“I haven’t heard of any plans to offer the WaveBird Wireless Controllers in stores again (I did some checking, and we are still shipping the original Nintendo GameCube Controllers to stores). If you’re unable to find the original Nintendo GameCube Controller locally, you can still order this item from us.”
– Nintendo customer service representative

So, unless you manage to get a hold of remaining remnants of clearance stock or find one used, you’ll have to use corded controllers to play GC games on your Wii. It’s disappointing that those who still play their GC games can’t get WaveBirds should they want to, but at least it means less GameCube controllers for Brawl. Score.
