Metriod film rumors still alive; movie poster surfaces

Published by Pete under Culture, Misc

metroid-movie.jpg

Rumors have been swirling about a Metroid movie for awhile, but a photo of what appears to be a blurry movie poster recently added some fire to the flame. Supposedly, John Woo is behind the reigns, and is dropping the announcement power bomb at this years Comic Con. We haven’t seen much recent work from Woo, which means he very well could have been hard at work translating the Nintendo classic to the big screen. This makes sense, as he optioned the rights to a Metroid movie back in 2004. I usually don’t like video game movies (or movie video games for that matter), but would happily pay to see a Metroid movie, as long as they have the awesome intro to Super Metroid in there somewhere.

Miyamoto nominated for Top 100 Most Influential

Published by Christian under Culture

080412miyaknight.jpgLast year, you voted Shigeru Miyamoto to 9th place on TIME’s Top 100 list of the world’s most influential people. He’s in the running again, and it’s up to you where he’ll be ranked.

The profile for the “father of modern video gaming” lists Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda as his greatest achievements as well as his part in creating the Wii and Super Mario Galaxy as part of his lasting contributions. On the flip side, TIME is a bit skeptical as to how well Wii Fit will fare in battling child obesity.

You can head over to TIME to vote for Mr. Miyamoto, who is currently ranked #31 and trails figures such as Ellen Page, Mark Zuckerberg, and Britney Spears. Will it stay that way? Only if you let it, people. Only if you let it. Go vote.

Real life Smash Bros: Game, watch, and match.

Published by Christian under Culture

No idea where this was taken (if anyone knows the actual source, let us know), but it’s pretty self-explanatory. When Mr. Game & Watch gets his hands on a chair like that, it’s lights out for everyone else. I’m sure you’ve all figured that out on your own by now.

College kids found playing with mushrooms in Taiwan

Published by Christian under Culture, Arts & Crafts

080405mariontnu.jpg

College kids are geeks. All of them, in some way, shape, or form. We just are. It’s not just Americans, either.

This photo was taken at the National Taiwan Normal University, during xWIZEx’s travels around the area. I’m sure we’ve all seen similar decorations in the past, but it’s always fun to see them in other countries and out for the public to see. Click the image for the full-sized photo.

Don’t worry, your DS is still alive

Published by matthew under Culture, Nintendo DS

What happens when you combine my favorite handheld, my runner-up for last year’s game of the year, and some exceptional fan art for that particular game?

Well, I guess you get this DS! The best part is that you can easily make one of these yourself. Just jump over to deviantART user McGibs’ page, print out the art, work some magic with your scissors to make the art conform to your DS, and then slide the print under a clear DS case.

And that concludes today’s DIY challenge. Join us next week as we learn how to turn a spare SNES into a jet pack.

Still cold? Let Heat Man warm you up

Published by matthew under Culture, Arts & Crafts

megaman.jpg

Remember that utterly delicious Punch-Out scarf from a month ago? Well, Beatboxtaun is back at it again with this Mega Man 2 inspired piece of neckwear.

Some of you already know about my love for Mega Man 3, but Mega Man 2 follows in a close second in my classic Mega Man rankings. My love for Metal Man and Air Man is so great, that I’ll even overlook the fact that Mega Man X is featured on the scarf instead of plain ol’ Mega Man from his NES days.

Unfortunately, the scarf is no longer available on Beatboxtaun’s Etsy page (it sold for $150), but for those of you interested, you can pick up the Shy Guy thermal featured in the product photo at Hot Topic.

Christina Aguilera honors Donkey Kong’s last supper

Published by Christian under Culture, Arts & Crafts

080320lastsupper_sm.jpg

…or so we’re told. This work, “The Last Supper,” was painted by Misha for the 2006 I Am 8-Bit exhibit. The original now hangs in the nursery for Christina Aguilera’s (yes, that Christina Aguilera’s) son Max. You can click the image for a larger view.

It’s Holy Thursday today, when the real Last Supper is celebrated. So if this makes you feel like you’d like a copy, $75 18″x10″ prints are available at the Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight link below, with each copy signed and numbered by the artist herself.

Jack Thompson recommends child molestation over supporting Rockstar Games

Published by Christian under Culture, Wii

080318kidcrying.jpgJim Sterling recently took the liberty of trying to see what kind of response he could provoke from the infamous attorney, Jack Thompson, over the recent decision to release Manhunt 2 in the UK after nine months of dispute. The conversation speaks for itself, so I’ll let you have a read:

Jim Sterling: The BBFC has been overruled by the Video Appeals Committee and Manhunt 2 will go on sale in the UK. Isn’t that awesome, Jack? Censorship is never good, and now we’ve seen a huge victory for freedom of market decision. I’m so happy!

Jack Thompson: Keeping adult products from children is not censorship.  Also, censorship is a ban on material, prohibiting its sale to anyone.  Don’t you own a dictionary?  What are you, a moron?

Sterling: Um, you DO realize the game’s sale was prevented from everyone in the UK by the BBFC, right? It WAS banned, not just from children. So yes, it was censorship. Now it’s unbanned, rated 18, like it should be. HOORAAAAAY!

Thompson: Why don’t you just molest children directly rather than through Rockstar.  It would be more personal that way.

Sterling: Did you just accuse me of child molestation, Mr. Thompson? As a man who pursues many cases of libel against him, you really should learn to not be a hypocrite. Go read the story. I don’t even want to play this game. But I want the choice to not play it to be mine. Have you no respect for freedom of choice, sir?

So much for wanting to protect the people, right?

Nike shoes imbued with Brawl awesomeness

Published by Michael under Culture, Nintendoness

Joseph Colon decided to take a pair of Nike’s Air Force 1 shoes and make them 10X better. All 36 playable characters from Super Smash Bros. Brawl are shown off, as well as a cameo appearance by the Master Hand on the heels of each shoe. The only minor drawback is the slightly off gray color of the added material. Check out some more angles of the shoes after the break.
