Wii Fit could be the fittest fitness device ever

Published by Pete under Culture, Misc

richardsimons.jpg

While many people are welcoming Wii Fit into their living rooms with open arms, did anyone stop to think of the spandex-clad, headband wearing, always friendly 80’s style fitness gurus? I didn’t think so.

Wii Fit is on course to be the best selling fitness device ever. It has been and will continue outselling exercise bikes, the Gazelle, celebrity exercise DVD’s, you name it. I’m concerned that this leaves many video trainers out in the cold with only a thin layer of stretch pants to shield them from the winds of change. Don’t be surprised if “Richard Simmons: Sweating with Wii Fit” hits the shelves later this year. I’d buy it.

Prince William beats 18-year-old in Wii Tennis at a social gathering

Published by Robert under Culture, Wii

prince-william-wii-tennis.jpg

We all know that anyone, no matter age, gender or race, can enjoy the Wii, but royalty? Apparently they do as Prince William served an unfortunate person some whooping in Wii Tennis at a benefit held for the Valleys Kids Project. After his victory William went as far as saying “you know you’re not allowed to beat me.” Nothing like adding a little salt to the wound, eh William? When asked what happened, the 18-year-old named Martyn James replied, “I was stitched up.” A good sport, indeed.

Stephen Colbert bitter about losing to Miyamoto, pop-singer Rain

Published by Robert under Culture

As you already know, Nintendo’s own Shigeru Miyamoto was #1 on YOUR Time’s list of the 100 most influential people. No surprise to us, but Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert wasn’t too happy about it. He lets off some steam to Miyamoto, but Rain, a pop-singer from Seoul, South Korea, took the brunt of his rant, getting challenged to a disco dance off to solve this bitter war.

While he does have a valid argument, who doesn’t love little singers dressed up in brown fluffy animal suits?

Friday Night Concerts: Oberlin Bassoon Quintet plays Mario

Published by Christian under Friday Night Concert, Culture, Videos

As many of you know, I’m a music education major - meaning I have to be familiar with a lot more instruments than just my own clarinet. Interestingly enough, the double reed instruments (oboe and bassoon) have turned out to be my favorite among the instruments I’ve had to learn. It’s one of the main reasons I’m presenting you with a bassoon quintet tonight!

This video is of the Oberlin quartet, but they’ve gone ahead and added a fifth player on Contrabassoon. There’s a smothering of Super Mario music to enjoy here, so I think you’ll enjoy it. Plus, if you need something more than just five bassoons to impress you, don’t worry - there’s some beatboxing thrown in as well.

Nintendo treats DS users with free Nintendo Fan Network

Published by Ryan under Culture, Nintendo DS

ndsmariners.jpg

While most of us get our Baseball condiment’s the old fashioned way by foot, those lucky Seattle Mariner fans get to use their Nintendo DS’ to order food, beverages, check out player stats and participate in chats while enjoying our national pastime. Originally, this service came with the expense of a small fee, but Nintendo has decided to roll out this service free of charge for home games this year.

While I seriously doubt that this technology will spread to other franchises throughout the country, I will hold on to the small shred of optimism that it could happen. I hope that someday I will be able to order a couple of “cold ones” from my seat, as I watch the San Francisco Giants continue their fabulous losing streak.

You can read the full press release after the break.

GTA for NES steals my heart

Published by matthew under Culture, Videos

Grand Theft Auto on the NES really isn’t too bad of an idea. Between the guns, dragons, drugs, and tanooki suits, it very well might be the perfect videogame. Heck, I’ll even be willing to look past the misused tanooki suit reference in the video…

Keeping a car Old School

Published by Ryan under Culture

nintendocar.jpg

While many car collectors like to acquire and maintain vintage vehicles from the “old days,” another car connoisseur took this to another level. Zooie has fitted his Toyota engine with a NES control pad replica.

There you have it folks, another NES tribute from under the hood. His next project should be to match his car’s body paint to that of a NES control deck.

Super Mario Theme played with, RC Car?

Published by Michael under Culture, Videos

We’ve seen some pretty creative arrangements of one of the most recognizable video game themes of all time, but this one takes the cake. Who would have thought wine bottles and an RC Car could come together and make music so well?

Metriod film rumors still alive; movie poster surfaces

Published by Pete under Culture, Misc

metroid-movie.jpg

Rumors have been swirling about a Metroid movie for awhile, but a photo of what appears to be a blurry movie poster recently added some fire to the flame. Supposedly, John Woo is behind the reigns, and is dropping the announcement power bomb at this years Comic Con. We haven’t seen much recent work from Woo, which means he very well could have been hard at work translating the Nintendo classic to the big screen. This makes sense, as he optioned the rights to a Metroid movie back in 2004. I usually don’t like video game movies (or movie video games for that matter), but would happily pay to see a Metroid movie, as long as they have the awesome intro to Super Metroid in there somewhere.
