According to Game Informer, “multiple” sources have confirmed the existence of an HD Wii successor, with an announcement coming as soon as E3 2011. Though the need for a high definition Nintendo console has in the past been denied by higher ups such as NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime, it seems that Nintendo has been exploring the option in secret, and is now exclusively showing the console to 3rd party developers to generate interest. This new direction for Nintendo is marked by graphics that are said to be competitive and in keeping with Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and is part of an overall effort to reach out to western gamers. As such, it may not even carry the Wii branding.
If this news is correct, then so too may be the detail that this new system would launch in late 2012. So, you know, right around the predicted Mayan apocalypse. Coincidence? I think not.
