Is your current Gamertag the one you originally wanted? If not, you might finally get a chance to nab it. Microsoft today began making old, used, and unavailable Gamertags available again. The process won’t be instant — it’ll take a while to recycle those dead accounts, but you’re welcome to check the system regularly to check if the Gamertag you want has been revived.
You can check for possibly available Gamertags the same way as usual — choose to Change Gamertag and see if it’s up for grabs. The downside is that you’ll probably still have to pay the usual fee for changing your Gamertag if you choose to actually claim a new (old) name, but hey… if it’s The One, it’s The One.
